Gordon Mummer Vice-President ............ Douglas Mummer Secretary-Treasurer . . . .... Betty Io Kearns class h ISIOI2 Those unforgettable memories! How they come crowding in upon us now as we the Class of '55 face commencement and the end of our high school days. Once we were freshmen. Remember? Remember, less Kauffman? You should, for you were our president. Ron Gibbs and Bonnie Elliott ought to remember too: they were our vice president and secretary-treasurer. We sometimes stayed after school or part of the noon hour, knitting our brows over money-making projects or activities in which we were to par- ticipate. During the next year we learned how to spell the word Sophomore : it ceased to be sophmore or southmore . We meant to be good ones. We meant to be rich too, so we sponsored concessions, working to build up a cash reserve. Our officers? They were Dave Sikarskie, president: Maxine Maclnnis, vice president: and Betty Ioe Kearns, the secretary-treasurer. Then came the lunior year, that one that stands out so vividly both socially and scholastically. Gordon Mummert was our president: Dennis Sellers, vice president: Betty Io Kearns again was secretary-treasurer. We had found she guarded our coffers well. We did something rather original too in the way of money making: served a chili supper to those with stout digestions, who can stand their food highly seasoned. They came, and stayed to dance afterward. It helped our fund. And there was the Iunior play, Seventeen Is Terrific , a success of course: and the I-Hop, of which we were proud. We had reason to be, for didn't we work evening after evening, some of us, to convert the gym into a Forty Fathom Fan- tasy? The same theme was used for the Iunior- Senior banquet served at the Perry Hotel, honoring the Senior Class. Near the end of the year, the five percent of our class ranking highest in schol- arship, leadership, character, and service C accord- ing to voteD was initiated into the National Honor Society. We were ready for Iune 13, near exhaus- tion but well satisfied with our accomplishments. And, finally, we began our Senior year at PHS, led again by Gordon Mummert as president: Doug Mummert, vice president: and-guess! Betty Io Kearns, secretary-treasurer. She was beginning to dream of money bags. The year's big undertaking has been the PETOSEGAN. Especially big because it had to be financed. Of course, there have been concessions: and a rummage sale which emptied our attics. poured nickels, dimes, and dollars into our treasury. We have been the honored guests, this year, at the Iunior-Senior banquet and I-Hop: and fifteen percent ranking at the top in the qualities required by the National Honor Society were received into membership of that organization. Skip Day came and went with a boat ride, laughter, pranks, songs, picnic lunch, et al, on Mackinac Island. And now Commencement. Yes, as those mem- ories come crowding in, we realize what High School has meant to us - knowledge, experience, fun, friendships. The memories always will be with us. We shall never forget. These boys are Gibbs, Bom, Kauffman, Vaughan, Rought, Sikarskie, Kondziela, Dunham, Hewitt, Livingston, Griffin and Gregory. The whole team played good football this sea- son. Although they only won three out of eight games, the school can really be proud of the 1954 team. One of the biggest games of the season, with Grand Rapids' Ottawa Hills, was won by P.H.S. by a score of 26 to 14. Under the capable leadership of coach Schuster and his assistant coaches, Mr. Splan and Mr. Neveaux, the team scored at least one touchdown every game. If all of the scores were added together, they would add up to our opponent's defeating us by the narrow margin of three points. Manistee .... Traverse City Cheboygan . Canadian Soo Cadillac .... After a season of 9 wins and 7 losses, Petoskey then proceeded to win the District Tournaments which were comprised of four teams: Rogers City, Alpena, Catholic Central, Cheboygan, and last but not least Petoskey. P.H.S, dis- posed of Rogers City. Alpena Catholic Central eliminated Cheboygan. This left Alpena C.C. and Pt k ' ' eos ey to play for the District Cham- pionship. Although Alpena C.C. proved to be a very powerful team, the Northmen conquered them for the title. After winning the District title, Petoskey drew Mt. Pleasant to play in the hqff S Qoing Regional Tournament. Petoskey played on f . e o their best games of the season, but could not quite dump through enough baskets to down the powerful Oilers. Petoskey fans can be ver r d y pou of the way the Northmen per- formed both in team spirit and sportsmanship. We wish to acknowledge our congratulations to Coach Zographos and the team. The boys who played their last season of basketball for P.H.S. are Ron Gibbs, Tom Bought, Arnie Gregory. less Kauffman and Barry Peacock. We wish to give these boys special 1 recognition for their very fine service to the team. .'L0se s0melhlnq? H 43 i But Momelu . Its main purpose is to better the relationship of the student with his school and the faculty. It also tries to promote student participation in activities of the school. Council meetings are held at noon on certain designated days. Mr. Luttmann acts as chief advisor. The members of Student Council are voted in by taking one student from each advisory. This year the group compiled a student handbook for the use of our own students and for other schools who want to know more about how our school operates. The Student Council discusses and works out many projects, but its chief aim is to work for the student body. 58 The Hi-Y Club under the direction of Mr. Quade and Mr. MacMillan have had another successful year. They endeavored during the past year to uphold their aim which is to create, maintain and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. Last December the boys of Hi-Y and the girls of Tri-Hi-Y went to- gether and presented a formal. Only members and their guests and alumni were invited to attend. This was very successful and enjoyed by everyone. In the spring a bake-goods sale was held for the purpose of sending boys to Camp Ha-O-Wenta during the summer. The pur- pose is to promote Christianity throughout the school and community. Every year Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y get together and put on a Christmas Formal, and in the spring, a picnic. The theme of the formal this year was Si1ver Snow. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. Bailey, our advisor, we have had a very successful year. SUB-DEBS The Sub-Deb Club was founded in 1941. At the present time there are 25 members. New members are taken from ninth and tenth grades. Seniors are honorary members. The advisor to the club is Mrs. Marguerite Beckley. Primarily a social group, it has as its ideals: good character, a spirit of friendliness, and service. This year one of the projects was a Christmas cookie sale. Some of the money earned was used for a needy grade school child. One of the yearly contributions of the club, is to the Iunior Bed Cross. Each year in the spring a slumber party is held honoring the senior members. During the past year the Pep Club had various money- making projects: sold blue and white shakers during the foot- ball season, during the basketball season, booster ribbons in the colors of the opposing team, with slogans on them were sold, and had concessions for a football and a basketball game. They bought new sweaters for the cheerleaders and sold emblem sweatshirts to mebers of the club. The club belongs to the state and national F.H.A. associations. The colors are red and white, the flower the American beauty rose. This year our club has had a candied-apple sale, and has given a christmas basket to a needy family. We plan to have a Valentine's dance along with other dances this spring. Before school ends this Iune an election and formal installation of officers will be held. 66 The purpose of the Girl Athletic Association is to provide recreation for any girl from ninth through twelfth grade. The girls earn money during the year for letters and pins. These pins and letters are given to those who have participated in G.A.A. and have not missed more than three meetings. Miss Mary Roberts is director or this club. Members play basketball, volleyball, bowl, and during the win- ter months participate in winter activities such as skat- ing and jumper-riding. But whatever it is you can be assured there is always some activity going on in the Agriculture Room, the headquarters of the Future Farmers of America, an organization of our high school. Here, we learn the principles of today's farming, the theory of tomorrow's farming and, the principles of citizenship which are the same yesterday, today, and always.
