I ' P I-I HISTORY The buxldxng of the present high school was begun m 1913 and fmlshed m 1914 Although bonds were xssued for S80 000 the total cost was about 990 000 Prevlous to the constructlon of the bulldlng hlgh school classes were held ln a bulldmg on the slte where our gvmnaslum now stands The orlgmal plan to have cement floors and lron stalrs could not be carrled out because the war ln Europe at that tlme made the requxred materlals scarce The present semor study hall and shop rooms rest on a bed of sohd rock In the summer of 1927 the stadlum was burlt at a cost of 5525 000 Before thls time football games and track meets had been held at the falrgrounds In 1929 the taxpayers of the clty voted to erect a new grade school and gymnaslum and re model the hlgh school at a total cost of S20 000 The new gymnaslum wlth a normal seatlng ca pacxty of 2000 made xt posslble to convert the older gymnaslum xnto the Semor Study Hall whlch seats 138 students and a shop room Two rooms were combmed to make another study hall for Jumor Hlgh students whlch made posslble the audltorlum wxth a seatmg capaclty of 1200 ln the old study hall Spec1al rooms were provlded for muslc groups the vocal muslc room bexng made from the glrls locker room and the lnstrumental muslc room from the old shop room The ln stallatlon of lockers ID the corridor walls made the gxrls coat room avallable for a classroom iroom 277 and The kltchens The mach me the prmclpal s offxce was made from the boys coat room old fashloned cookmg classroom was remodeled ln the summer of 1941 Small modern now replace the former rows of gas burners mechamcal drawlng room was moved ln 1942 to the south end of the shop room and the shop was placed m the former mechamcal drawlng room thus separatmg the wood shop and machme shop At thls pomt ln the history of Petoskey Hlgh School, we the Class of '47, take our leave.
