C.O. COMMANDER GRUNWALD GRADUATED FROM WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY AND ENTERED OFFICER CANDIDATE SCHOOL, NEWPORT R.I. UPON BEING COMMISSIONED HE REPORTED TO USS SUMNER COUNTY KLST-11485 AND SERVED INI- TIALLY AS DCA AND SUBSEQUENTLY AS THE EN- GINEERING OFFICER. AFTER COMPLETING THE CRUISER DESTROYER FORCE 600 PSI STEAM ENGI- NEERING SCHOOL IN SAN DIEGO CA, HE WAS AS- SIGNED AS ENGINEERING OFFICER, USS SPROS- TON KDD-577J FROM 1964-1966. HIS FIRST TOUR ASHORE WAS AS ENGINEERING INSTRUCTOR AT U.S. NAVAL DESTROYER SCHOOL, NEWPORT RI FROM 1966-1968. AFTER THREE MONTHS TRAINING IN CORONADO, HE WAS AS- SIGNED AS A NAVAL ADVISOR TO THE VIETNAM- ESE NAVY FOR ONE YEAR. IN MAY 1970, COMMANDER GRUNWALD SERVED AS ENGINEERING OFFICER, USS DAHLGREN CDDG- 435. IN JANUARY 1972 HE ATTENDED THE ARMED FORCES STAFF COLLEGE, NORFOLK VA. COMMANDER GRUNWALD SERVED ONE YEAR ON COMMANDER CRUISER-DESTROYER, U.S. ATLAN- TIC FLEET STAFF IN NEWPORT RI AND TWO YEARS ON COMMANDER NAVAL SURFACE FORCE, U. S. ATLANTIC FLEET STAFF IN NORFOLK VA IN THE MATERIAL DIVISION. HE RETURNED TO SEA DUTY IN JUNE 1975 AS EXECUTIVE OFFICER, USS FARRAGUT QDDG-371. FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS, HE WAS ASSIGNED TO THE OFFICE OF CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS IN THE SURFACE WARFARE DIVISION. COMMANDER GRUNWALD IS MARRIED TO THE FORMER MARGARET JENKINS OF OAK HARBOR WA.
