PIRATEER 1987: The Celebration This year, Petersburg's Centennial, is not only a year for reflecting on the past and celebrating the present, but also for looking toward the future. The future of our town will depend on those of us who attend school now. We, the annual staff, would like this annual to be an example of how our lives are being shaped by our environment-the town and people of Petersburg. We hope that his annual will be a lasting tribute, not only to the school, but to our town. Also that future generations living in the next hundred years may use the '87 Pirateer to travel back and look at life in the old days . This is a year for celebrations, and so we present to you our part in the celebration; The 1987 Pirateer. For the first time in years, or maybe ever, the Pirates were rated in the Top 10 of the Norfolk Daily News. The team was also honored to have their game against the Humphrey Bulldogs broadcasted live over KLBN as the game of the week. This year's greatest victory was breaking the school's twelve year losing streak against the Chambers Coyotes. The last game was perhaps the worst defeat of the season. The game went to the Clearwater Cardinals in a sloppy, but hard fought battle. Because the Pirates declined in the latter half of the season, they ended with as record of 3- 5. Next year's team will greatly miss the talents of the three graduating Seniors, but look for- ward to another season of exciting play. Seniors: Jeff Staashelm, Todd Jennings, and Randy Johnson. Although the record was 5-12 only four of the games were lost in two sets. The 1986 P.H.S. Volleyball team will be losing four seniors, but keeping three start- ers. Because of this there should be enough experience to have a winning season next year. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL The Junior Varsity Volleyball team's record could not be determined be- cause the lack of time before the foot- ball games did not permit them to fin- ish most games. The J.V. team was involved in a Freshman-Sophomore Tournament at Clearwater on October 18. They played their best game of the season against Pope John on that day. 38 Top, Team: (back) Lisa Thieman, Annette Ketteler, Rose Starman; (middle) Christy Johnson, Tami Zabka, Amy Bottorf; (front) Kirsten Schlesselman, Brenda Seier, Tammy Bode Above, Kirsten Schlesselman carefully sets the ball. SPORTS: Rising To The Occasion The boy's Junior Varsity was equipped with experience, speed, and determination. The football team played two hard fought games, but lost them both. The basketball team had a good season. In the Fresh Soph Tournament they took 3rd place, and won half of their regular season games. The J.V. players will be a big asset to basketball programs in the years to come. Top right, J.V. football team warms up for a game against Newman Grove. James, Hybl, Walker, Meyer 110 W. 4th Neligh, NE 68756 39 BOY'S BASKETBALL: Slammin' Jammin Although this year's team had a few rim touchers they didn't have enough height to take the airways for a little slammin' jammin'. The Pirates tried to make up for the loss of height with quickness and agility. The beginning of the sea- son appeared to be hopeful for the Pirates, but as the season pro- gressed and the teams got tougher, the Pirates had trouble contending with the competition. Next year's team will be very short, but there are a lot of experienced players, Coach Harrington said, With the help of these players and the up- coming three point stripe, we stand a chance in next year's schedule. Varsity Players: Troy Friese, Troy Johnson, Randy Pelster, Scott Thieman, Jeff Staashelm, Neil Ketteler, Rod Stuhr, Randy Johnson, Allan Ketteler, Jim Knust. 40 Jacobsen Home Center The Handyman's Helping Hand Neligh, NE 887-5416 Top left, Randy Pelster leaps high over the defend- ers to get his shot off free of obstructions. GIRLS BASKETBALL: Jump For Joy The team consisted of 11 girls; 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 4 freshman. Our seniors, Brenda Spieker and Jennifer O'Cilka, had a tough year when it came to injuries. Brenda was injured the third game of the season and was out of play the rest of the year. Before the game sea- son was started, Jennifer was injured in practice and never reached her full potential. Co- captains were the two seniors, Brenda and Jennifer. Junior, Rene Petsche, was named All- Conference Honorable Men- tion. The girls finished out the season with a record of 0 wins and 14 losses. By the end of the year many re- cords were broken and a couple were tied. Randy Johnson did all the honors for the boys. He broke the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, long jump, triple jump, and tied his previous high jump record. Rene Petsche also tied the previous long jump re- cord for the girls. The boys team brought home the first high school track trophy ever. They placed second in the Clearwater invite. All team members, both girls and boys, placed sometime throughout the season. At the end of the season, Most Valuable Honors were presented to Randy Johnson and Rene Petsche, while Scott Thieman and Tammy Bode earned Most Improved Honors. The Track Team consisted of (back) Randy Johnson, Dan Ketteler, Jeff Staashelm, Troy Johnson, Jeff Scholl, Lee Ketteler; (middle) Brent Bode, Ervin Schlesselman, Scott Thieman, Jason O'Cilka; (front) Christy Johnson, Tammy Bode, Rene Petsche, Gina Koch.
