Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1986 volume:

THE 1986 PIRATEER The 1986 Pirateer is a result of the efforts and dedication of the Annual Staff, many of whom spent long hours com- pleting it. I, as editor, would like to thank each staff member for their contri- bution, big or small. The 1986 Pirateer is a reflection of the 1985-86 school year. My hope is that this yearbook will be a reminder to all of the Class of 1986, as well as the rest of the student body and faculty. As you go through the pages, I hope you will appre- ciate the hard work everyone put into it. It was the first time a Pirate team ever claimed a victory over Wheeler Central. This year's team, with a record of 2 wins and 5 losses, had both its ups and downs. Our greatest thrill of victory came against Wheeler Central. We beat them with a final score of 26-14. The game was our greatest show of strength, speed, and teamwork. On the third play of the game, Paul Koch found a tremendous hole in the line and was off to a 50 yd. TD run. Minutes later, Paul Koch, protected by the Purple Wall, turned the corner and was again off to the races with a 65 yd. punt return for the touchdown. In turn, Jeff Staa- shelm showed his prowess by cruising in for a 12 yd. TD, behind the impressive works of the Pirate line. Our greatest agony of defeat came in a muddy, hardfought 6 man game versus Spalding. After trailing the Bluejays, the team still showed great leadership and determination by rallying to within 2 points. With little time left and a strong drive to the end of the field, we were stopped short on a crucial 4th down play. Victory was then put out of reach when the Bluejays scored on a trick play with only seconds left. Although we had a losing record, the team shared a lot of fun and crazy moments. Such as the Humprey game in which Jerry Stuhr blocked a kickoff with his head or in practice when the linemen and runningbacks changed posi- tions for a few snaps. Several team members received post- season honors for their accomplishments. Jerry Stuhr was named to both offense and defense 1st Team All-Confer- ence, and received Omaha World-Herald All-State Honor- able Mention. Paul Koch was named to both offense and defense Hon. Mention All-Conference, Omaha World-Her- ald All-State Hon. Mention, and Norfolk News All-NEN Hon. Mention. Lance Benda received All-Conf. Hon. Men- tion offense. Paul Koch was named MVP and Jeff Staashelm MIP for the year. Top, Paul Koch eludes a defender while Dan Knust shows off his blocking skills. Middle, Randy Johnson lets the ball fly as his teammates provide ample protection. Bottom, Paul Koch takes a pitch from Randy Johnson as Dan Knust, Jeff Staa- shelm, Dean Pelster, and Bruce Benda look for someone to pick on. They started off the year by pounding the Newman Grove football team in a 32-22 victory. They then turned to basketball which included the Freshman Sophomore Tournament. The boys gave the other teams a rough time, but came out on the losing end when it was all over.
