Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1985 volume:

THE PIRATEER 1985 Our Universe, Our World, Our School Our theme reflects the fact that for thir- teen years our lives have revolved around our school. It has been our own private world, the center of our own private universe. We know that we are not unique in this trait — it is a univer- sal truth with students the world over. Because our special world is small, we have learned to reach out to each other to achieve our goals. We will carry this lesson with us past our school years, to be applied as we make our way in the world. We must continue to realize that in reaching out and working together good does and will happen. It is our hope that we have demonstrated our ability to work together in our very special world. Thomas S. Temme Editor-in-Chief Petersburg Public School Petersburg, Nebraska 68652 Catch A Falling Star This year we honor our principal and friend, Mr. Paul R. Dalton, who began his teaching and administrative du- ties at PHS in August 1981, when the Class of 1985 were Freshmen. During his four-year sojourn with us he has been counselor, coach and confidante; but, especially, he has been friend and supporter. Mr. Dalton retired this year after many years of dedica- tion to the teaching profession. He taught us the funda- mentals needed to be good students, but more important- ly, he instilled in us the values described by Walter D. Wintle in his poem Thinking,” with which we have chosen to close our Annual. Please read it. We will always be grateful for Mr. Dalton's efforts to make us proud of our school and ourselves. We were very active in sports, drama, speech, and many other extra-curricular activities, in which we were on Varsity or played major roles. Paul received the Most Improved Award in football; Diane received the Most Valuable Award in girls track, and Jerry received the Most Improved Award in boys track and the Best Actor Award. Our major activity was planning the Junior-Senior Prom. We sponsored cake raffles and a concession stand to raise money for Prom, along with selling magazines and records. It is our hope that the experiences and efforts in making this school year a successful one will be carried on with us, to help us next year to make our last year even better. The majority of the class participated in either volleyball or football, but only four were on the basketball teams. Jeff and Randy were starters in the Freshman Sophomore Tournament, and Jeff was chosen as alternate for the 3200 meter relay team at the State Track Meet. This is the first year that every class member lettered in sports. All four girls were in Pep Club. We were well represented at both the Conference and NTCC Academic Contests. Brenda earned second place ratings in both contests. We also were active in the Conference Art Contest, Conference and District Speech Contests, Band, Chorus and the Fall Play. Our class had the distinction of having two Class Sponsors, Mrs. Navratil and Mrs. Heitoff. We held a cake raffle, ran the concession stand, sponsored the Sweetheart Dance and collected aluminum cans. We all had the honor of serving at Prom. The climax of our year was selecting and ordering our class rings. Our entire class was active in J.V. sports, and Amy, Rene and Lisa made up three-fifths of the girls bas- ketball team; needless to say, they all lettered. Gina received the Most Improved Track Award for the girls. Some of us participated in the conference and NTCC Academic Contests, and all of us in the conference and District Speech Contests. Gina received a Superior at both Speech Contests. Some of us were in the Fall and One-Act Plays, and our class wrote and produced an original Christmas play, which we performed for the entire student body and the Senior Citizens. Lisa and Gina shared the Best Actress Award for 1985. To raise class funds, we held a cake raffle and a paper drive, and we ran the Concession stand during a home game. We also co-spon- sored the Sweetheart Dance in February. We think this year was great, and now that we've Gotten our feet wet, we know next year will be even better. FOOTBALL: The Particial Eclipse Season. Our record improved again this year to four wins and four losses. Twenty boys were out for the team, and six more served as student managers and statisticians. The boys demonstrated great school spirit and teamwork. Their efforts paid off, because six of our Pirates were named to All-Conference and or All County: Jerry Stuhr, Paul Koch, Gary Pelster, Tom Temme, Dale Henn and Roger Seier. Roger also was named to All State, after he rushed for 1018 yards in seven games. It was a great year, and as always, we will miss our departing Seniors. But, once again we are looking forward to the achievements of next year's Pirate team. 38 Top left, the Pirate offense attempts a guard around play during the Humphrey game, but Tom Temme ( 75) gains little yardage before he is brought down. KNENERGY, INC. 233 South 4th Street Albion, NE 68620 39 40 VOLLEYBALL: An ebb tide season Including statisticians and managers, this year's volleyball team consisted of every girl in the High School and Junior High. Despite such school spirit and loyalty, the girls were unable to repeat last year's achievements, because the team was primarily inexperienced at the Varsity level. We were able to win four of our 18 matches and graduation robs us of only one starter, Jeanine Ketteler, who was named to All-Conference, First Team. The lack of experience was the key factor to our record, and with the loss of only one senior, hopes are high for the 1985-86 season. Top right. Our boys competed in their first holiday tournament in many years, bringing home a 3rd place trophy. They switched from the traditional zone defense to a man-to-man defense with increasingly good results. Al- though not evident from the photographs, the second team saw a lot of game time and gained valuable varsity experience. Tom Temme, who was named to 1st Team, All-Conference and All State, Honorable Mention, was named Most Valuable Player. Dan Knust and Roger Seier also were named to All-Conference. The team of six made it through one game before our girls became “the mighty five. Fortunately, no more severe injuries plagued the team, and the girls — one senior, one sophomore and three freshmen — were able to finish their entire season. A record of 0 wins and 14 losses did not detract from Jeanine Ketteler's abilities, which were recognized on the Conference level with First Team honors and at State level with Honorable Mention. In additon, as the season progressed, the supporters' enthusiasm and support grew with each passing loss. Lastly, PHS now has the most experienced underclass players in the Conference.
