Countless individuals, groups, and organizations have given their time, energy, prayers, and financial support in an effort to help our community recover from the November 1985 Flood. To those individuals who spent countless hours immediately following, to those whose efforts continued long after the immediate needs were met, and to the countless individuals whose lives were changed because of lost loved ones, homes, and damage to personal possessions, we dedicate this volume of the Petro Schola 1 85' - 86' FILLED WITH HEADLINES THE SHUTTLE TRAGEDY ‘We Mourn Seven Heroes’ Astronauts Ellison S. But it is undeniable that gradua- Jtion is a time for goodbye. It is a time change; a time for seniors to say farewell to high school and to move onward to ex- pand their horizons. The graduation ceremony of 1986 is unique in that there were two graduation ceremonies in- stead of one ceremony. It was originally planned that graduation would be held on June 6, at 7:00 P.M. However, our Vikings’ baseball team was in Charleston playing in the state tournament at that time so another ceremony was scheduled for June 7, 1:00 P.M. Both ceremonies were extremely successful, and so were the Vikings — they won! The class of 1986 consists of 117 members. Leading the class academically are Valedictorian Ron Stephens and Salutatorian Vanessa Watts. At graduation many scholarships and awards were granted to outstanding students. Susan Wolfe received $500 from West Virginia Career College; Ron Stephens and Connie Smith, Na- tional Scholar Athlete Award; Dawn Hope, the Daughters of the American Revolution Award. American Legion Scholarships were given to Da- vid Bittorf, Frank Laco, John Western, and Kim Hiser. Grant Memorial Hospital Auxiliary scholar- ships were granted to Becky Calhoun, Becky Sites, and Connie Smith. Becky Sites also re- ceived the Grant County Education Association Scholarship. Malinda Harris and Connie Smith received a Potomac State College Undergraduate Scholar- ship; Roy Hedrick, Potomac State College Alumni Scholarship. The Petersburg High School Scholar- ship was given to Chad Curtis, Donica Coblentz, and Karen Nesselrodt. John Muscat received the American Field- Service Award; Roy Hedrick, the Dave Trenton Memorial Scholarship. Bill Mitchell and Chad Cur- tis received scholarships to West Virginia Wes- leyan. Rotary Scholarships were given to Mike Al- len, Matt Borror, and Cindy Meek. Salutatorian Vanessa Watts received the Shobe Scholarship to Alderson-Broaddus. Ki- wanis Club gave scholarships to Ron Stephens and Donica Coblentz. Ron Stephens also was awarded the Robert Byrd “savings bond.” Members of this class will go in all directions, but their memories together at PHS will last a life- time. 28 A Time For Goodbye Graduation takes place on Friday, June 6. At P.H.S. many students enjoy learning and participating in French lifestyles. The French Club has the largest enrollment of any other organization at P.H.S. Its 87 members enjoy such activities as the annual Christmas party, the Senior dinner at a French restaurant, and the end-of-the-year party, as well as the monthly club meetings to plan for these activities. This year, the French Club has participated in numerous money-making projects. Some of these activities include: selling candles, mirrors, posters, key chains, stationery, and even pizzas. Their objective is to obtain a trip to Canada. Each mem- ber planning to travel to Canada must raise $300.00. The trip is planned for May 21 to May 25. Since the students have been so ambitious and the money-making projects have been so suc- cessful, it looks as if the French Club members are Canada- bound. Congratulations French Club! Office and library aides help the main office and the school library operate with greater efficiency. Students who sign up to become an aid learn the tech- niques of either office procedures or library skills. PHS is very fortunate to have such ded- icated students who deserve to be recognized for the service they provide to our school. If you are interested in learning office pro- cedures, it would be worthwhile to try to schedule office or library aid in your high school curriculum. All it requires to become an aid is special permission from either the office or the library. 52 Todd Fouch, Sabrina Wright, Lori Mongold, Regina Kline, Patricia Mauzy, Cassy Flet- cher. Dina Kimble. Every year they participate in various and ex- citing activities. For instance, they sponsor a foreign student to come to PHS for a year, as well as partially funding one of our own students so they may attend a foreign school. Occasion- ally foreign students and their host families gather for a weekend to discuss their experi- ences as a participant. While the AFS has not been very prosper- ous this year, they hope their future plans for finances will prove to be a success. Their up- coming money-making project exclusively deals with collecting used cans and bottles to sell them to recycling companies. Currently, they are hosting a foreign ex- change student from Australia. John Muscat is a senior and has been attending PHS through- out the 85-86 school year. He received a schol- arship to WVU and will enter that school in the fall.. 54 Julile Norwood gives her full attention to AFS. Julie Bremer, a 1985 graduate, was sent abroad by AFS. Melissa Harman and Regina Cline prepare for initiation. Thespians is a club formed for those stu- dents interested in the field of drama. These hardworking students build the scenery and control the equipment necessary to put on a successful play. This year, their version of the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet took them all the way to the State final competition. They got to travel to Morgantown for 3 days and 2 nights where they performed the play in front of a panel of judges and received third place. This year, the Thespians also started the practice of initiating their new inductees. Since this is new, all of the existing members had to go through an initiation too this year. They had to ?aint their faces and then go through a whole day Df school without talking. Because of this hard-working group of stu- dents, many of Petersburg’s citizens are able to Jnjoy attending plays of ail types several times year. Cassy Fletcher - President. It was designed for students who share a common interest in farming. Its members are students who plan to or at least hope to make a “future of farming.” The members take part in such activities as ham, bacon, and egg contests. It’sa very competitive club. Just planning to be a farmer does not mean you get in this club. There are strict initiation procedures one who hopes to join must fol- low. On the designated initiation day, one who hopes to join must wear a satiric costume of a farmer. Basically, they have on farm clothes, but they must wear their pants inside-out, their shoes on the wrong feet, their hats on backwards, and whatever else the FFA thinks of. The large enrollment of FFA implies that the interest in farming among students at P. H. S. is very common. With the upcoming of these future farmers, agriculturer in Grant County should prosper. In order to become a member of the Viking Log Staff, one must apply at the end of the school year for the next year’s staff. The only a few are chosen to be members. The editor is selected from the current staff. This year’s Viking Log editor is Marlene Bible. She is responsible for making sure all of the school’s vari- ous activities are covered in the newpaper. Photographers also play a very important role in putting together the Viking Log. These students get to experience what it would be like to work on a real newspaper. They have to cover different sporting events, interview both students and teachers, and they must meet their deadlines. While many people participate in activities at PHS, only a few are willing to take the time to write about them for those that don’t. BOOK FAIR PROVES SUCCESSFUL The paperback book fair featured the very best in reading for junior and senior high school students. A wide variety of subjects were included - adult best sellers, young adult fiction, science fic- tion, romance stories, computer books, and sport classics. The purpose of the book fair was to motivate students to read and be given the opportunity to choose their own learning material from a broad selection of books. A total of 864 students participated in the fair; approximately 275 books sold for a total amount of $794.40 2. Students and facul- ty members enjoy this hobby, and look for- ward to skiing as much as time and weather permits. Seniors Chad Curtis and Jeff Roth both plan to continue skiing in the future. Jeff feels that “reaching the bottom” is the most rewarding part of this sport. Juniors Barb Frye and Candi Roby also enjoy this hobby. Having fun and meeting new people is the most rewarding part to Barb. Holly Cole, Amy Cooper, and Benny Sturgill are just some of the sophomores who take to the slopes. Having a nice time and meeting new people, are a few reasons why Benny and Holly enjoy this winter sport. Amy’s reward of skiing is that “everytime I come to the slopes, it’s more challenging, and it’s something I can do on my own.” Faculty members who enjoy skiing are Chuck Yeager, Rosanne Glover, Joe MacFarlane, and Yvonne Rowland. Mr. MacFarlane likes to ski for excerise and the challenge he receives from it. The most rew- arding part of skiing for Mrs. Glover is “reaching the bottom of the hill without a ’wipe out’.” As far as awarded achievements for skiing Mrs. Rowland’s son Mark claims that she should win a medal for being the “slowest” person on the mountain. Why do all these interviewers enjoy skiing so much? Why not hit the slopes the next time you get the chance and discover why for yourself. Gail Smith shows Danica Wilson the right wav down the hill. Doug Neff shows Cassy Fletcher how to get off without falling. Gail Smith tells Melissa Skiles. “Look what we have to go down!” Angela Hiser shows her stuff. 89 On Febuary 19, 1986, the Red Cross Blood Mobile made its yearly visit to Petersburg High. This is sponsored by the Key Club as an annual project. For one day our new gym was converted into a blood-receiv- ing clinic. Shepherd College has lived up to this goal of excellence throughout its 114 year history. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS A modern, well-equipped campus with an enrollment of 3,700 students. Shepherd blends the best of the old and new. Approximately an hour's drive from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Shepherd students benefit from the career opportunities and cultural attractions of the metro area while enjoying the charm and friendliness of a campus located in West Virginia's most quaint and historic town. A COMPREHENSIVE COLLEGE WITH MANY ALTERNATIVES Shepherd College offers 70 different academic programs, leading to both associate and baccalaureate degrees. An effective counseling and placement program helps students graduate and get good jobs. Today, more than 10,000 Shepherd alumni live and work in 48 states and seven foreign countries, and many have earned advanced degrees from the nation's top graduate schools. A DEGREE FROM SHEPHERD- A SOUND INVESTMENT Shepherd is fully-accredited and rated very competitive in Barron's and Peterson's college guides. ACT scores for freshmen at Shepherd lead all other West Virginia state colleges. Enrollment grows annually, making Shepherd the fastest-growing college in the state. And the college's faculty are well qualified, with more than 60 percent holding terminal degrees. All this is available at a cost that's among the lowest in the East.
