When its ninety-three individual members leave their Alma Mater they will scatter to meet their various destinies. Time has proven they will never assemble in their total ever again, The senior year is the most important year of a graduate's high school life. As it is the most recent one will always recall many pleasant memo- ries which as the poet says, mellow with the years . There are highlights of this year which were special in the curriculum of the school. The Petro Schola staff has tried to capture these fleeting moments andapresent them to you in concrete form. As you open your yearbook you will travel down a school lane of memories. The mind functions amazingly. lt needs only a brief glimpse of the past to bring it back vividly. The 1964 Petro Schola will be a treas- ured reminder of happy school days when our troubles were few and our hearts young and gay. Betty Cornell, Editor MOMENTS TO REMEMBER When other nights and other days may find us gone our separate ways, We will have these moments to remember. Administration DEDICATIO - For your unending patience throughout each year, For your jolliness, gaiety, and cheer: For the lessons in English from which we all have profited, For all the good times that to help us you have forfeited: For teaching us the crafts that make our home the best, For contributing the most to make our junior play a success, For the long hours spent helping with our junior promg For the high spirited attitude which we have learned so many lessons from: To list all the ways that you have helped us Would be too much to do, So we'll simply say Thanks Mrs. Arnold For just being you. And in appreciation, we proudly dedicate to you Our 1964 issue of the Petro Schola. Our memories of Mrs. Arnold will not be that of her sitting primly behind her desk. We never saw her that way--she was too busy. They will be of her in her slacks coaching the junior play cast. We will see her with a paint brush in hand devoting talents to the prom decorations. But most of all we willremember the times when we asked her advice and she found a solution to our problems. T0 SQMEONE DEAR MRS. OLLIE M. AL S , k 433 ii Varsity Basketball Coach Carroll Michael led his Viking Team to a seven win and six loss 1'eC0rd in the first thirteen games. The most exciting game of the year was the upset of the unbeaten Franklin's thirteen game winning streak in the last minute of play. Franklin had won two victories from the Vikings previous to this game. Foul shots by senior David Cuppett in the last minutes gave Petersburg the victory, 52--50. Jim Brodengeyer played a fine game by contributing seventeen points: Roy Harman scored twelve points, and senior Chuck Swisher Fisher ripped the net with ten points, most of which were in the last quarter. Other victories were over Circle- ville 70-55, Mathias 56-45, Bayard 53-51, Mathias 64-61, and Moorefield 56-51. Petersburg suffered defeats from Piedmont 80-41, Franklin 55-46, Romney 75-68, Keyser 94-61, and losing to Keyser again in the last seconds by a narrow 59 -57. Kneeling: Chuck Fisher, Dave Cuppett, Trent Veach, Jim Brodengeyer, Roy Harman. Standing: CoachCarroll Michael, Charles Combs, Eddie Hill, Russell Burgess, Robert Turley, Roy Reynolds, William Halterman, Jay Stewart, Doug Schinzing, Student Trainer. Franklin took the Holiday tournament by defeating Petersburg 55-53 the first night and Circleville 64-55 the second night. Circleville beat Moorefield 59-55 the first night and the Vikings beat Moorefield 63-50 the second night. Jim Brodengeyer has led the Vikings by scoring 200 points in the first thirteen games to place second in the Potomac Valley Conference. David Cuppett follows with 124, Chuck Fisher and Roy Harman are tied at 121 after thirteen games. 95 iking Baseball Team First Row: Larry Sydenstricker, Norman Sites, Manager, Glen Vance, Joe Hines, Thomas B001-, Statistician, Doug Schinzing, Student Trainer, Gary Smith, David Sears, Delmas Mauzy. Second Row: Butch Porter, Chuck Fisher, Larry Mauzy, John Moyers, Roy Reynolds, Robert Turley, Roy Harman, Eddie Hill, Bill Thompson, Coach Wayne Barr. The Viking baseball team had a successful season by chalking up a six win four loss record. Under Coach Wayne Barr's direction the young team competed very well with the teams in the Conference. The team traveled on the arrn of Roy Harman and Chuck Fisher. Glenn Vance, the catcher, Joe Hines, left fielder, and Roy Rogers Reynolds, short stop, had batting averages over the three hundred mark. In the 64 season the Vikings will have the same basic team. Coach Barr and his experienced team of Seniors and Juniors should have one of the best records of the Vikings in Petersburg High School. If, you are fortunate enough to be in the graduating class of 1964, you will have a distinct advantage over class- mates who are not taking this big step. Statistics show that people who have a high school education far surpass those who do not, in eco- nomic, social and spiritual adjustment, and in successful living. Statistics also prove that those in the senior class who will continue their education will lead even a more rewarding life. The faculty and I wish to extend good wishes to the class of 1964 in attaining this additional big step in your life. Robert W. Hupp, Principal I: Facult LINTON H. MEMGRIAM Nancy Marie Duling Sadness lingers in our hearts as we recall and cherish the memory of one of our classmates who started her high school career in the seventh grade and who would have graduated in the class of sixty- four. Nancy Marie Duling of Arthur, West Virginia, the daughter of Galen Duling and Florenia Evans Duling, completed her seventh grade at Petersburg High School, after which she and her parents moved to Athens, West Virginia. While there she was the winner of the Golden Horseshoe, an honor that she cherished. She departed this life in a Bluefield Hospital on October 16, 1960, as a result of rheumatic fever. Although it is our loss we feel that it is heaven's gain. There will always be a vacant place in our hearts and a cherished memory of our beloved classmate. by: Abe Evans TRIBUTE T JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY Friday, November 22, 1963 was a memorable day. A day in which our hearts ached with grief at the news of the assassination of our beloved President of the United States. Truly a leader of man- kind, we remember him as a shining example of courage, wisdom, freedom, and everlasting love for his country. His memory will long be remembered as we, the class of 1964, dedicate a part of our lives to his ideals, purposes and beliefs. Teachers Seen in Strangest Places Which WY now?
