The Junior Viking Band perform at the concert, and will be ready for the Viking Band next year. CHOIR CLASS OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS A class for those who like to sing could describe the choir class at Petersburg High School. The choir is open to all students in grades 9-12. During the year the choir presents several programs for the student body and for local and civic groups. At Christmas the choir participated in an all-school as- sembly by singing a cantata The Night The Angels Sang . Small groups taken from the choir have entertained on several occasions during the year. Two students attended All-State Chorus in Charles- ton during March, and the choir also participated in area clinics, spring programs and Baccalaureate and Commencement Services. The choir is directed by Mr-. William Fox. FIRST ROW: Dottie Judy, Barbara Bergdoll, Suzie Turpin, Sandra Rodgers, Marsha Hill, Lois Roberts, Virginia Feaster. SECOND ROW: Jane Hyre, Karen Sites, Annabelle Swick, Margaret Ours, Becky Ours, Karen Van Meter, Amanda Full. THIRD ROW: Mr. William Fox, Gretchen Redman, Delores Kessel, Imogean Hedrick, Julia Hartman, Frances Bergdoll, Renna Schaeffer, Vera Redman, Billy Likins.

The uniform is a new creation by Ostwald which consists of a military style black coat, with black trousers and hat trimmed in white and red. The coat may be worn in seven different styles. The band year began in ,Tune when summer band school started. The band participated in several events including the Poultry Festival, the High- land County Fair and the Tri-County Fair Parade in which it won first place. During the fall the band added color and entertainment to all home football games by performing at half-time. Several away games were also included in their program. The band participated in the Forest Festival in Elkins and THE VIKING MAIORETTES the Buckwheat Festival in Kingwood. School spirit has been boosted by havlng the band play for home basketball games throughout the year. At press time plans are being made for the band to attend the All-State Band Auditions, area band clinics and festivals and the Apple Blossom Festival, Adding beauty and vitality to the Viking Band is the group of girls who leads the band on parade. During the first week of school tryouts were held and a committee of faculty members selected eight girls to be majorettes for the year, The girls were judged on the following points: dependability, moral character, personality, grades, ability as a majorette and appearance, Selected as head majorette was Marsha Combs, a junior who is serving her second year with the group. Shirley Roby was chosen as assistant head majorette, Shirley is a senior and has been a majorette for three years. Other veteran girls were Penny Harman, senior, third yearg Grace Alt, senior, second yearg and Delores Van Meter, junior, second year, Newcomers to the troupe are Ann Rodgers, junior, Janet Pack, junior, and Judy Pack, freshman. The little majorettes, Coach Michael's daughters, parade with the band at home events. This year has been a successful one in every respect for the PHS band. The organization has grown in size from approximately 35 members to 55. has developed musically, has boosted school spirit and school acitivites, and has been one of the best sources of advertisement for Petersburg High School. Director of the band is Mr. William Fox. who is serving in this position for the second year. 9
