I THE PETRO-SCHOLA 1963 'Y Pub lished by THE SENIGR CLASS PETERSBURG HIGH SCHOOL Petersburg, West Virginia Volume Number Eighteen FOREWORD As we, the Senior Class of 1963, depart as graduates, we look back at the many struggles we have faced during our high school career in order to graduate, one of the most important steps in our lives. At the same time, our statehas reached its centennial celebrationg it, too, coming through similar struggles since 1863 when Presi- dent Abraham Lincoln signed the bill making West Virginia the thirty-fifth state in the Union. That our state contains spectacular scenery, numerous mountains, industries, and churches of all creeds is notable, but even more noteworthy is the fact that we, as West Virginians and graduates of Petersburg High School, have a bright future in store for us if we will only seek out the oppor- opportunities for employment in the iields of mining, agriculture, tourist trade, industry, and teaching right here in our state. Will we meet the challenge and s eek out these opportunities as true W est Virginians should? Will we gr ow with our Economic conditions may be better in some other states, but can we hope for them to keep on improving in West Virginia if we, the tiiture leaders of the state, seek employment and use our talents elsewhere? Let's be on the team that keeps West Virginia on the move! Wouldn't it be wonderful. if, say twenty years from now. the graduates from other states were coming in greater numbers to find those brighter horizons in our state, the finest of them all! Denver Hipp, Editor tunities which our state has to offer. Think ofthe I 3 5 state as it begins a new century? Or, on the other hand, will we leave our home grounds as many have, to seek what they call brighter horizons? During last summer some band boosters had a vision of seeing the PHS band outfitted in new uniforms. A great deal of progress had been made by the band during its one year of being reorganized and these boosters wanted this progress to continue. A few parents started the ball rolling and soon the entire community was involved in raising money to purchase new uniforms for the entire band. The first project was a food stand at the Tri- County Fair, and this was followed by dinners, raffles, selling projects and individual donations. Finally enough money was raised and the Band Boosters met with the uniform company representa- tive and designed the uniform. A total of fifty band uniforms, eight majorette uniforms, and one con- ductor's uniform was purchased. BELOW: The Viking Band at the Poultry Festival. The uniform is a new creation by Ostwald which consists of a military style black coat, with black trousers and hat trimmed in white and red. The coat may be worn in seven different styles. The band year began in ,Tune when summer band school started. The band participated in several events including the Poultry Festival, the High- land County Fair and the Tri-County Fair Parade in which it won first place. During the fall the band added color and entertainment to all home football games by performing at half-time. Several away games were also included in their program. The band participated in the Forest Festival in Elkins and THE VIKING MAIORETTES the Buckwheat Festival in Kingwood. School spirit has been boosted by havlng the band play for home basketball games throughout the year. At press time plans are being made for the band to attend the All-State Band Auditions, area band clinics and festivals and the Apple Blossom Festival, Adding beauty and vitality to the Viking Band is the group of girls who leads the band on parade. During the first week of school tryouts were held and a committee of faculty members selected eight girls to be majorettes for the year, The girls were judged on the following points: dependability, moral character, personality, grades, ability as a majorette and appearance, Selected as head majorette was Marsha Combs, a junior who is serving her second year with the group. Shirley Roby was chosen as assistant head majorette, Shirley is a senior and has been a majorette for three years. Other veteran girls were Penny Harman, senior, third yearg Grace Alt, senior, second yearg and Delores Van Meter, junior, second year, Newcomers to the troupe are Ann Rodgers, junior, Janet Pack, junior, and Judy Pack, freshman. The little majorettes, Coach Michael's daughters, parade with the band at home events. This year has been a successful one in every respect for the PHS band. The organization has grown in size from approximately 35 members to 55. has developed musically, has boosted school spirit and school acitivites, and has been one of the best sources of advertisement for Petersburg High School. Director of the band is Mr. William Fox. who is serving in this position for the second year. 9 The Junior Viking Band perform at the concert, and will be ready for the Viking Band next year. CHOIR CLASS OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS A class for those who like to sing could describe the choir class at Petersburg High School. The choir is open to all students in grades 9-12. During the year the choir presents several programs for the student body and for local and civic groups. At Christmas the choir participated in an all-school as- sembly by singing a cantata The Night The Angels Sang . Small groups taken from the choir have entertained on several occasions during the year. Two students attended All-State Chorus in Charles- ton during March, and the choir also participated in area clinics, spring programs and Baccalaureate and Commencement Services. The choir is directed by Mr-. William Fox. FIRST ROW: Dottie Judy, Barbara Bergdoll, Suzie Turpin, Sandra Rodgers, Marsha Hill, Lois Roberts, Virginia Feaster. Many seniors seem to think that their diploma signifies the end of the educational process. I would like to say that as long as we exist and re- tain our mental facilities our education progresses right up to death. Life is growth. When we dis- continue growth we die. Upon reaching physical maturity the only growth process left is mental. Always strive for improvement of the basic skills you have gained at Petersburg High School. Robert W. The eighty-six students on the following pages have worked, played, and learned together. They have grown with their school and their state. Finally they realize high school life is all to end soon. In their four years of high school, subject material became progressively more difficult. The freshman year emphasized citizenship and scholarship in basic courses in civics and algebra. As sopho- mores, they were introduced to the world of biology and geometry. American history and advanced math were studied when they were juniors. As seniors, the students took subjects which would help them to prepare for maturity, understand life, and select a position in our society, At last it is all finished. They have progressed satisfactorily and have been made ready to go out and face the world on their own, but not alone, as graduates of Petersburg High School, Senior class officers were: Bill Harman, presidentg Cecil Arnold, Vice-president: Carol Nelson, secre- tary: Denver Hipp. treasurer, JOSEPH W. It is necessary that students work with zeal as they move forward to whatever chanlleges they may meet beyond the next horizon -- in the final year. There are many opportunities for juniors to express themselves and grow in ability to ac- cept greater responsibilities. They are in position to play an increasingly important part in the progress of the school. Wrestling is an up and coming high school sport which gives a boy of all sizes a chance to participate in an athletic contest. A match consists of six minutes, this being divided into three two-minute periods. The match is started from a stand- ing position, the object being to pin your opponent. If no pin has occurred in the first two minutes, the players then take what is known as a referee's position on their knees. Points are M kppgpn p kggp W 1 3 scored for falls and reversals. If no The wrestling team. 'W 5 fs pin takes place, the man with the most points wins. If a pin takes place, the individual gets five points which are totaled at the end of the match to see which team won. The wrestlers are divided according to weight starting from 97 pound class up to what is called the unlimited class for those weighing over 1'7 I pounds. All in all, this is a rugged individual sport, which should be encouraged as an inter-scholastic sport. It not only builds good physical skills, but also gives the individual self-reliance. Oh boy! Just wait till I get in there. CMI. Long's babyj 'ARCHERY CLASSES HELD WEEKLY For a number of years, there has been an Archery Club in the county, but due to bad weather, club activities had to be halted with the coming of the winter months. The early fall of 1962 brought plans to go indoors during bad weather. Permission was obtained from officials to have the classes and shoots in B gymnasium. Target mats were purchased, and when everything was made ready, everyone was invited to attend the archery classes and to join the Archery Club. Classes are held each week preceding the club member's shoot. Fifteen persons attended the first instructional class, and since that time there has been increasing interest and participation in the activities of the club. The club is proud of its accomplishments thus far, and the members hope to keep archery going year round in this area from now on. p . Ama. These boys are learning improved farming methods and putting what they learn in class into practice. Vocational Agriculture gives the boys a chance to secure business experience and a chance to act as their own instructors. At Petersburg the FFA is an integral paft of Vocational Agriculture. Part of the program being carried on is the All-Day or classroom instruction by B. R. Dunn and G. R. Chadock. The other part is the Adult Farmer Classes directed by Mr. L. G. Stark. With the support of the Governor of West Virginia, W, W. Barron, and the President of West Virginia University. Paul A. Miller, the State Awareness Committee, composed of students of West Virginia University, is spon- soring a program to repair and or develop sites of natural beauty and historical value in preparation for the West Virginia Centennial cele- bration in 1963. The youth of West Virginia from each county will work on one site per county: these projects to be judged in the Spring of 1963. High on a hilltop about one mile Northwest of Petersburg lies an old graveyard dating back to years be- fore the Civil War and in desperate need of repair and restoration. The Debra Harr, Mr. Chadock and Roy Hyre working on Veteran Isaac S. I-Iutton's grave in foreground, veterans grave, tremendous job involved in putting the cemetery in a pre- sentable condition and helping provide an access road to it so visitors may reach it with a minimum of discom- fort and exertion became the centennial project of the Petersburg Chapters of FHA and FFA, The graveyard, known as the Hutton-Weston Ceme- tery, is of historical value. It is believed that approxi- mately 100 persons, some of whom were the early set- tlers of the Petersburg and surrounding areas, are buried there. Although interest has been maintained over the years in this particular cemetery, no active care has been taken of it. In the accompanying photographs the marker for the confederate veteran, Isaac S. Hutton may be seen. Mr. Hutton was one of the early citizens of Petersburg. Showing the relation of the graveyard site to the high school Mr Dunn and boys re setting tombstones plant--the clump of trees standing on the highest point of the hill beyond and immediately to the right of the gym is the graveyard. Resting after the first day's work. Petexsburg Chapter officers: Becky Alt, Jane Hyre, Detra Harr, Peggy Davis, Cynthia Van Meter, Susan Stonestreet, Sue Carr. Ellen Groves was absent. The Petersburg Chapter is a member of the national Future Homemakers of America, an organ- ization of girls and boys studying homemaking in high schools of the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The national organization is composed 'of chartered state associations which are made up of local affiliated chapters from high schools. The over-all goal of the FHA is to help indi- viduals improve personal, family and community living, now and in the future, Each of the three parts of the homemaking program teaches us necessary homemaking skills. Along with the nine chapter parents and our advisor, Mrs, Mohl, the 62 members of the Peters- burg Chapter engaged in many activities this, our West Virginia Centemiial year. Besides the Centen- nial Project that we are to continue working on throughout the year, we planned a Sweetheart's Ball which was held on February 16 to honor Mr. and Miss FHA and our parents. The Future Homemakers of America has done much to better our community and develop personal and family living standards. Petersburg Chapter, Future Homemakers of America. Qstatej FUTURE TEACHERS LEARN BY DOING The A, E, Krause Chapter of the Future Teachers of America has been active in student substitute teaching in the high school and the Peters- burg Grade School. This experience has influenced and encouraged the members to consider more seriously entering the teaching profession. The local chapter is a part of a nation wide organization of the Future Teachers of America, sponsored by the National Education Association. Its membership includes students in grades 1 and 12 who are interested in the teaching profession. Some of the goals of the organization are to promote the growth of responsibility, to maintain in students an attitude of honesty with all associates, to encourage students to take advantage of every opportunity of educational growth, and to strive to maintain physical fitness in order to remain mentally alert, physically strong, and personally attractive, The FTA seeks to enable members to study and to identify the qualities, traits, and apitudes which are basic or related to successful teaching and to acquire an understanding of the history and development of our public schools. their purposes and objectives, and in appreciation of the contri- bution they have made to our democratic, free society. During American Education Week the FTA presented an apple to each teacher to show appre- ciation for them. Officers serving the chapter this year were: President .... . . . The national headquarters is located in Washington, D. C. The Petersburg Chapter was organized in 1937 with a membership of seven. The present member- ship is nine, prior to the induction of new members eligible for the current year. Members of the society are selected from a list recommended by the faculty. The nominees must have a B average or higher and show distinct traits of the organization's four ideals: to promote leadership, to build enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render a service and to develop character in the students. The candidates that are finally selected are inducted before the entire stu- 'Q dent body at a special candle light assembly. An annual project of our local chapter is the evaluation of the students' grades for the honor roll at the end of each six weeks period. The point system is- now in use for this evaluation. Any stu- dents having between 6'l.5 and 80.0 points are placed on the honor roll. This arrangement is somewhat different from that of previous years.
