TABLE OF CONTENTS Title Foreword Administration Faculty Classes Honors Scene in Area Organizations Athletics Advertising Not-so-vital Statistics We, the Petro Schola Staff and Seniors, are approaching the threshold of a new era. We publish this book for the many memories it will hold of our high school days. To the Stars Through Difficulties, our motto, is a challenge to every member of this senior class. How will we face this era of science? There will be many obstacles in our path into the future, how will we face them? As Oxenham wrote: To every man there openeth A Way, and Ways, and Way, The High Soul climbs the High Way, And the Low Soul gropes the Low, And in between, on the misty flats, The rest drift to and ho. Our goal will be reached only by overcoming difficulties along the road of life. And every man decideth The Way his soul shall go. We recognize that we have been guided in the past by counsels of love and faith. We now face decisions of our own. With this in mind, we proudly dedicate this Petro Schola to our mothers and fathers. The Grant and Hardy County Boards of Education in cooperation with the Trade and Indus- trial Department of the State Department of Education sponsored a course in “Residential Wiring for adults in the two counties. The class met twenty-five times for three hour sessions, beginning September 10, 1957, and ended with graduation exercises on January 23, 1958. The Home Ec- onomics Department of Petersburg High School, under the direction of Mrs. Bess Snyder Mohl, served the graduation dinner. A diploma and certificate of achievement were presented to each student who met the course requirements. This is the first class of its kind to be offered in the United States. The Adult Farmer Program is another phase of the educational offerings in the high school. L. G. Stark is the instructor of this program. Motional Mono Society, The National Honor Society is composed of members from the Junior and Senior classes throughout the nation. The national headquarters are in Washington, D. C. The members of the society are selected by the chapter from a list recommended by the faculty. Those considered must have a two-point average or better, and must show distinct traits of the organization's four ideals: Leadership, Scholarship, Service, and Character. The students that are finally selected are inducted before the entire student body at a special candle-light assembly. The local chapter members carry as a school service project the evaluation of student grades for the honor roll at the end of each six-weeks period. The system now in use is based on points. Any student in grades nine through twelve, having a total of points of 67 j to 74 were placed on the honorable mention list. All over 74 points were on the honor roll. In grades seven and eight, students had to have a total of 85-90 points to be on the honorable mention, and all above 90 made the honor roll. The Chapter’s officers for the year are: President: Bob Harman Vice-President: Beverly Riggleman Secretary-Treasurer: Ann Stonestreet Messenger: Charles Miller The faculty advisor is Mrs. Betty B. She- Viftin Stand The “seasonii ” -- that is what the Viking Band has added to many well organized functions during the year, if we may be permitted to use a phrase uttered by an admiring patron. Around the school the band added more pep to the football and basketball games. Besides helping in activities of other groups, it has represented the high school in numerous acti- vities both local and in surrounding areas. The Vikings participated in the Tri-County Fair, the Forest Festival at Elkins, and a Labor Day Celebration. Later in the spring it attended the Tri-State Band Festival at Martinsburg. At Christmas time the music department put on a program in which both the band and chorus functioned. A spring concert concluded the band’s formal activities for the year. The officers this year are: President, Harry Nelson; Vice- President, Phillip Park; Secretary, Carolyn Collins; Treasurer, Ray Michael; and Managers, Pat Ours and Elsie Rumer. Each year the FHA, the Future Homemakers of America, sponsors a recreation activity in which the students and faculty as a whole may participate. On November 26, 1957, such an event was the informal record hop featuring as disk jockey, Alice in Recordland from radio station WELD at Fisher. The students were unanimous in their approval and in answer to their request for a return engagement, the April Fool’s Dance came along. Jutwui Siemetnak iA o £ (Xm iica Although membership in FHA is entirely voluntary, our enrollment of 80 girls is the highest the Petersburg Chapter has ever had. The Future Homemakers of America is a youth organi- zation for students studying home economics. The foundation of its program is the desire for better home living. A style show featuring clothing made by students of Mrs. Mohl’s home economics classes, a reception for parents, assisting the civic clubs with the March of Dimes Drive, pre- paring and serving dinners for the 4-H poultry project mem- bers and their guests, and the adult class in household wiring, were among the important activities of the calendar for this year. Every other year the Petersburg Chap- ter is eligible for a candidate for a state office. Two years ago our chapter presi- dent, Ann Welker, was also State Vice- President of State and National Projects. This year it is possible that we may offer a candidate for State President which is one of the offices to be filled from the Eastern Region. It is too early at this writing to know. Because 10% of today’s youths are juvenile de- linquents, the remaining 90% are faced with prob- lems that seem to have no solutions.
