highlights At the beginning of the 1956 school year, Peterson High School welcomed eleven new faculty mem- bers to the staff and twenty-two trans- fer students, making a total of 671 students enrolled at P.H.S. Our Vo-Ag team, under the di- rection of Mr. Dunn, ranked first in the state in the Horticulture Contest at Morgantown. In the Sweepstakes, Petersburg held third place in West Virginia. Our football team enjoyed its best season in twenty years and ended with a season record of 7-2. Three of the boys were placed on the P.V. C. All-Conference Team and two on the second team. Climaxing the foot- ball season was the Football Dance and the crowning of Miss Football ill. The Juniors and Seniors participated in College Day, October 8, which is held every year to acquaint the students with the requirements and standards of surrounding colleges. On November 28 and 29 the Junior Class presented a three-act comedy, Beauty and the Beef, which was well attended by students and townspeople. The National F. F. A. Convention at Kansas City was attended by representatives from the Petersburg F.F.A. Chapter. The Student Council sponsored the Holiday Ball December 21 in B Gym. Music was furnished by the Three Tones. A new club was organized on the campus this year. Under the direction of Mrs. D. S. Collins, the Quill and Scroll is the national high school journalism honorary. The Viking Log was entered in the annual State Competi- tion for High School News-Periodicals in Morgantown. The Viking Band, directed by Mr. Stickler, participated in the inaugural parade in Charlestown on January 14. The WVU Mountaineer Week Team visited the Seniors on January 25. The two representatives were Ruth Keister and Joe Calhoun, both from the surrounding area. On January 31, the Seniors sponsored a Donkey Basketball Game which was a huge success and a mon- ey making proposition. On February 7, sixteen new Honor Society members were an- nounced and a formal initiation was held later in a special assembly. The Sectional Basketball Tour- nament washeld inMoorefield, Feb- ruary 28, March 1,2. The above are but a few of the interesting events that occurred dur- ing '56 and '57 on the hill.
