Wayne was a quiet boy and one who was well liked by all who knew him. A vacant place remains unfilled in the class of 1957 as we cherish his memory. Thos. H. Sites On our dear old Bergdoll Hill. Reared against the sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater, As the years roll by. Forward ever be her watchword, Conquer and prevail, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Petersburg High School, hail . . highlights At the beginning of the 1956 school year, Peterson High School welcomed eleven new faculty mem- bers to the staff and twenty-two trans- fer students, making a total of 671 students enrolled at P.H.S. Our Vo-Ag team, under the di- rection of Mr. Dunn, ranked first in the state in the Horticulture Contest at Morgantown. In the Sweepstakes, Petersburg held third place in West Virginia. Our football team enjoyed its best season in twenty years and ended with a season record of 7-2. Three of the boys were placed on the P.V. C. All-Conference Team and two on the second team. Climaxing the foot- ball season was the Football Dance and the crowning of Miss Football ill. The Juniors and Seniors participated in College Day, October 8, which is held every year to acquaint the students with the requirements and standards of surrounding colleges. On November 28 and 29 the Junior Class presented a three-act comedy, Beauty and the Beef, which was well attended by students and townspeople. The National F. F. A. Convention at Kansas City was attended by representatives from the Petersburg F.F.A. Chapter. The Student Council sponsored the Holiday Ball December 21 in B Gym. Music was furnished by the Three Tones. A new club was organized on the campus this year. Under the direction of Mrs. D. S. Collins, the Quill and Scroll is the national high school journalism honorary. The Viking Log was entered in the annual State Competi- tion for High School News-Periodicals in Morgantown. The Viking Band, directed by Mr. Stickler, participated in the inaugural parade in Charlestown on January 14. The WVU Mountaineer Week Team visited the Seniors on January 25. The two representatives were Ruth Keister and Joe Calhoun, both from the surrounding area. On January 31, the Seniors sponsored a Donkey Basketball Game which was a huge success and a mon- ey making proposition. On February 7, sixteen new Honor Society members were an- nounced and a formal initiation was held later in a special assembly. The Sectional Basketball Tour- nament washeld inMoorefield, Feb- ruary 28, March 1,2. The above are but a few of the interesting events that occurred dur- ing '56 and '57 on the hill. It came into being as a definite need arose for the recognition of honor students in schools throughout the land. Our chapter was formed in 1937. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to promote leadership, build an enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, and to develop character in the students. Students are selected from the Junior and Senior classes. Those with a two-point average or better are considered as candidates to be voted on by the faculty. New members are inducted at a special candlelight assembly. The school service project carried on by our local chapter is the selection of honor students from the classes at the end of each six weeks. This year the honor system was based on points. A total of 67| to 74 points placed a student on the honorable mention list. Everything above 74 was on the honor roll. This applied only to grades 9-12. For the 7th and 8th grades 85-90 was honorable mention and above 90 was honor rolL These names are posted in the hall of the main building and appear in the Viking Log and the Grant County Press. To date there have been 176 students inducted into the Petersburg Chapter of the National Honor Society. The plot takes place during the biggest football game of the season at Winnebagushi, (Minnesota) High School. Ginny Allen (Mary Alice Mayle) came to Winnebagushi High School to get away from her “past” of being on the Junior Quiz Program. She lets Beef (Bob Harman,) captain of the football team help her get her history, in which he was quite “good.” To prove she was dumb, she copies two wrong answers from Beefs paper and Beef is blamed for copying. He is suspended from school. Later Ginny decides that if the whole team were sick the game would have to be postponed for a week and Beef would be able to play then. So Ginny and Franny Barton (Libby Weimer) plan a party and the whole team gets sick, the game is postponed for the week, but Ginny is in disgrace. In time, it is learned by all that she had what she con- sidered good reasons at the time for her exploits, and although they ran afoul, the other students were glad she had done as she did. The F.F.A. is an intra-curricular activity having its orgin and root in a definite part of the school curriculum - vocational agriculture. It exists today at Petersburg because of a cooperative spirit and a desire on the part of farm boys to have an organization of their own. They consist of boys from fourteen to twenty-one years of age who wish to prepare for farming through vocational agriculture, who desire practical business experience and to enjoy the fellowship of one another. Improved agriculture, better local communities, a more satisfying farm home life, and more effi- cient farmer - citizens are emerging as a result of the boys’ experience. Harry Keplinger, chapter reporter, placed third in the state F.F.A. creed contest, and was elected reporter for the South Branch Valley Federation F.F.A. Eddie Van Meter, chapter trea- surer, won the sheep shearing contest at the Tri-County Fair. Petersburg placed first in poultry, first in horticulture, second in farm crops, third in plant pathology and ninth in livestock in the West Virginia Vo-ag judging contest competing against approximately 40 high schools.
