Sports Etlitor Sunday, February 27, 1 977 29 By STEVE SMITH Progress-Index Sport Writer PETERSBURG— The Crim- son Wave of Petersburg claimed the Central District basketball tournament title and a Central Region playoff berth last night with a 59-53 victory over Thomas Dale. The Wave, which led throughout, notched the win the same wav it umet Hopewell in the semifinal Thursday— by controlling the boards. Peters- burg outrebounded the Knights 53-44, coming off a similar (50-42 advantage over the Blue Devils. But the win last night wasn’t as emotion-charged as the Hopewell game. Hopewell had beaten us the last seven times,” explained junior Earl Carroll. “But we beat them the last time. We rebounded well tonight, even the guards.” Carroll paced the Wave at- tack with 17 points and 15 rebounds Sophomores Anthony Hines and Robert Stovall added 12 each. Hines and Jay Watts also had 14 points apiece. The victory, although it was played before a less-than- capacity crowd, gave coach William Lawson a crown in his first year as the Petersburg coach. ‘‘Sentimentally, Hopewell was a bigger victory,” he said. But this one gives us the title. It also advances the Wave into opening round action in the Central Region tournament that begins Thursday at the Richmond Coliseum. The Wave will play J. R Tucker of the Colonial District in the second game (9 p.m.) while Midlothian, the Central District regular season champion, receives a first round bye. Petersburg, which topped the Knights in both regular season meeting , trailed only once in the game last night, midway through the first period, when Andrew Lewis hit a jumper from the key to give Thomas Dale a 7-6 advantage. Carroll drove on the baseline to put the Wave promptly back on top, where it stayed for the rest of the game. Jay Watts hit a jumper from the perimeter for insurance and then added a fast break, after Carroll had one too, to boost the Wave to 14-8. Thomas Dale closed the margin to 14-10 when Lee Sullins hit both shots on a technical foul called on Lawson, who disagreed too flam- bouyantly with a referee’s call. Thomas Dale coach Tom Davies also drew a similar infraction before the night was over. Two quick baskets to open the second quarter put the Wave ahead 20-10 and that 10-point lead proved to be too much for the Knights to ever quite catch. Led by Sullins, who muscled his way into some offensive rebounds, the Knights came back to 22-18 with just over three minutes left. Watts hit another pair of outside jumpers to give a 24-18 cushion and the Wave muffed two straight fast break layups before settling for a 30-28 halftime lead. At halftime, Lawson harped on one aspect of the Wave’s and His team responded in the second half with appropriate compensation to secure the win. ‘ Coach told us they were getting too many offensive rebounds,” said Carroll. “In the second quarter I guess we broke down on that a little.” “We didn ' t give them that second shot off the boards after the half,” noted Lawson. (Robert) Stovall pinned one of their shots to the backboard and blocked another and that sort of helped keep things turned around ” Lawson was also concerned that Thomas Dale was able to plug up the middle against the Wave offense at times. Carroll compensated with baseline drives and Watts continued his hot-handed shooting to offset that difficulty. Thomas Dale did trim the lead to three points at 40-37 late in the third period, which is the closest the Knights came after the opening period. The Wave led 42-37 going into the final segment. Petersburg did manage to open up the Thomas Dale center in the last eight minutes, going to a spread offense and driving the alley when the opportunity was presented. Carroll, Hines and Stovall provided the rebounds for follow-up shots if the drives failed. The last obstacle the Wave had to face was the Knights’ stubborn fullcourt press. Carroll said that the press didn’t bother the Wave last night. “We Just let a guard bring it up and everybody else took off,” he said. It didn’t hurt us that much.” “It wasn’t as tough as usual,” agreed Lawson. “I think both teams were drained from Thursday’s games. They seemed to have a lot of them tonight.” The Knights were bouyed by Sullins who had 19 rebounds tc match his 19 points. The senior forward was the only Knight in double figures. “Lee played a fine game,” said Davies. “He’s been doing that all season.” Wave Defense Stops High-Scoring Devils By GEORGE WYATT Progress-Index Sports Writer PETERSBURG - Forty-one minus thirty-one leaves 10. That 30-plus deficit was too much to make up and second place Hopewell fell to third place Petersburg, 54-48, in the second semifinal game of the Central District basketball tournament last night at Petersburg High School. In the opener, Thomas Dale upset top-ranked Midlothian, which played without 6-8 center Tim Carr, by a 60-50 score to advance to the final game tonight against Petersburg. The winner will receive a regional berth and join Midlothian, which won the regular season Central District title, in the Regionals next week. It was mainly Petersburg’s defense and chilly Hopewell shooting (20-72 for 26 per cent) that allowed the Wave to beat the Blue Devils for the first time in their last eight meetings. Hopewell ' s deadly duo of Greg McCray and guard Gerald Stewart, who stood 1-2 in Central District scoring this year, couldn’t find the basket last night. McCray finished with a 23.6 average and Stewart at 18.4, and nearly two-thirds of the Blue Devil offense, but they combined for only 10 points last night. “That’s the first time McCray has not scored in double figures in two years and the first time this year Stewart hasn’t been in double figures,’’ Hopewell coach Bill Littlepage said. “It was just one of those nights when nothing dropped,” he added. “We had many chances to win it but we couldn’t get the key basket. Give Petersburg some of the credit for our shooting, but we still had enough good shots to win it.” The Wave employed a box and one and 2-3 diamond defense on the Blue pevils, with; guard Terry Houston chasing Stewart and 6-5 sophomore Robert Stovall fronting McCray, to protect against the high lob passes. “Our game plan was to shut off McCray and Stewart and let the others guys shoot,” first- year Wave coach Bill Lawson said. “It worked even better than we had expected.” Work it did as McCray hit on only 3-19 from the floor and was probably intimidated for the first time this year. Stovall jammed a couple of McCray’s shots early in the game and the awesome Petersburg rebounding did the rest. Neither McCray or Stewart scored a point in the first half. The game was rough, and ragged at times as both teams were in the bonus free throw situation in the first quarter. Hopewell had three leads in the first quarter, but Peters- burg took the lead until the fourth quarter on a Houston jumper with 5:39 left in the quarter. With guard Jay Watts scoring six straight points and Anthony Hines popping one from the side, the Wave raced to a 14-7 lead. Hopewell cut it to three points, 16-13, at the end of the first quarter. Watts had half of his game-high 16 points in the opening stanza. Petersburg had a great chance to blow the game open in the second period as it got the lead to 10 points halfway through the period. Then the Wave went into one of its patented turnover streaks and bst the ball five straight times down the floor. That allowed Hopesell to get back in the game as Ronnie Williams, Roland Holloway and Albert Lee Harris led a charge to cut the margin to three at halftime, 29-26. Harris hit a shot at the buzzer to slice it to three. Hopewell’s hustling defense caused the Wave numberous headaches in the second and third periods. The Blue Devils held the Wave to just eight points in the third quarter. Hopewell scored 10 and cut the lead to one, 37-36, going into the final period. Despite the low-scoring game, both teams reaced up and down the floor and rarely held the ball. Petersburg spread it out a couple of times, but failed to produce anything more than turnovers or a poor shot. “We’re not a good hold-the- ball team,” Lawson admitted, tongue in cheek. Stewart got his first bucket of the game at the 5 : 38 mark of the third quarter and McCray scored his first basket at 4:59. Williams, who had one of his best games of his career, returned a rebound shot with the quarter just nine seconds old to give Hopewell a 38-37 lead, its first lead since the early going of the first quarter. The lead changed hands twice in the next two minutes before Earl Carroll put the Wave in front, with a stuff on a beautiful feed underneath, and was fouled. He completed the three- point play to put the Wave up 42- 40 and it led the rest of the way. “We had three straight chances to run our lead to three points and I think that would have turned the game our way,” Littlepage said, but, once again, our shots wouldn’t fall and Petersburg was able to capitalize on Carroll’s three- pointer that allowed them to keep the momentum.” The pressure was strangling in the late going. Watts, who is not afraid to fire it up, had two free throws at the two-minute mark and the Wave held to a slim 48-46 lead. He missed the second also, but Hines went up high to snag the rebound and put it back in the hole in what could have been the key basket of the game. TTie Wave stretched its lead to six and then eight before a meaningless basket at the buzzer by Holloway cut it to the final margin. Littlepage went entirely with seven players while Lawson slipped 10 players in and out of the lineup. We wanted to keep fresh people in the game,” Lawson said. We knew he (Littlepage) used only six or seven and we wanted to try and wear them down. Littlepage, of course, was disappointed in the outcome of the game. “Going to the regionals gets to be a habit and this is only the second time in the last 10 years we haven’t made the trip,” he said. Not making a clearcut choice in tonight’s championship game, Littlepage said, .“This was a big win for Petersburg and their momentum may carry them through. Peters- burg is the best rebounding team in the district and that concerned us tonight. The Wave held a 60-42 rebounding edge over the Blue Devils with Hines, Stovall and Carroll doing the bulk of the work. Petersburg has beaten Thomas Dale twice this year by 69-65 and 82-69 scores. However, the Knights pose a concern for Lawson. “I predicted two weeks ago that Thomas Dale would be in the final game of the district tournament,” he said. “They are the quickest team around and their press could cause us problems. They have had two great games in the tournament so far.” Hopewell finished a great season at 18-4 while the Wave, at 14-6, hopes to add some more wins to its record. Among our guests were: the council members of Petersburg, mem- bers of the School Board, John D. Meade, Superintendent of the School Board, Elmore Rainey, Assistant Super- intendent, and the members and Presi- dent of the Booster’s Club. Judge Ben- jamin Campbell was our speaker, he is the judge of the Juvenile Court here in Petersburg. Judge Campbell spoke elo- quently making the program a big suc- cess. Among the retired teachers we had Mrs. Cain, Mrs. Galloway, Miss Lanier, and many others. The program was a day to remember. 1 20 From the school all of the Senior members of the choir sang each song lovelier than the first. The Presidents of both the Senior Class and the SCA spoke. Ushers and Hostesses were selected from members of the class. After the program the honorees were escorted to the conference room of the office where they were served refreshments by the gracious hosts and hostesses. Row 2: Lauren Barboza, Senator; Willie Jackson, Senator; Deborah Brown, Senator. Though the main concern for Juniors was the Ring Dance, other projects such as the Junior Class Homecoming float depicting ‘‘West Side Story” kept the Officers and the Executive Board working to get the “Class of ’78” organized. Goals were set to make the Ring Dance an occasion that Juniors would always remember. Leaders Clarence White and Patricia January campaigned to Juniors urging them to pay class dues. After the requests received a slow response. Juniors sought an alternate method to raise money. Sufficient funds were obtained for the Ring Dance when a karate demonstration was held. Ms. Briley supervised committees to make sure that problems were smoothed over. Anticipation and excitement were felt as plans for March 1 9, 1 977 were finalized. I 161 It seems to me that most beings here on earth try to be loving and generous. And if people look for these qualities in others, they will usually find them. Here at PHS we represent that part of society that is just beginning to understand that the world is made for love. We realize in our everyday associations with each other, that if we get out in life and try to do good things and have good times then we’ll succeed. We are proud to be students at PHS and look forward to the time when we’ll graduate. We hope that we ' ll be able to show some under- standings about life that our school days have taught us. — Grady Powell, Jr. To me Petersburg High School is more than just a large architectural structure. PHS is a place where people from all backgrounds can interact and learn from each other. Aside from the friendships that are made, hard work takes place. But best of all, PHS is a place where people, some as different as night and day, can live together. — Marcus Aron I believe we are fortunate to be a part of PHS. High School has broadened our horizons. We are given a greater selection of studies than many schools. The teachers treat us like friends rather than children. After we graduate we’ll look back and be thankful for the love shown to us, not only from the faculty but from the friends we have made. — Nancy Curtis. Petersburg High School has given me many opportunities for advancement in cultural as well as additional academic areas. Not only have I met many new teachers and students but I have also become reacquainted with not-so-new friends. Each day for me has been a new experience. Somehow, I can always make a “bad” day turn out “good” and the reason for that is the many diversi- fied activities and events that take place in the school keep me happy and so busy that I have no time for a “bad” day. Besides having been prepared for college I will always hold on to the many memories of the good times I spent at “Dear Ole PHS”. — Lauren P. Barboza 16 ? J It’s terrific! It ' s special! It’s unforgettable! Our school is one in which you can stand up and be proud. Why? We have academically inclined students, fine athletes, great singers and bandsmen, a beautiful school, beautiful people, and a learned faculty. All of these people have worked together to make this school the special place it is. Each and every person has taken the responsibility of his or her role to make the play, A School Life successful. When my graduation day comes, the memories of Dear Ole PHS will be deeply embedded in my mind. — Sabrina Spratley PHS was the beginning of a new and different experience for me. When I first entered senior high I was confused, afraid and shy. To help overcome my confusion I began asking people for information and direction. I was still afraid until an upperclass- man explained a few things to me by saying that there was no need to be afraid because I am a part of PHS. The best thing to happen to me was to be nomi- nated football sweetheart and then win! ... a school is what you make it and PHS is the best. - — Robinette Chatman I feel that the first day of high school is the begin- ning of the rest of our lives. I ' m proud to be a bonafide member of PHS. The social atmosphere is a congenial one, even between students and teach- ers. We have an outstanding athletic program because great emphasis is placed on the athlete. I do feel though that we could give more support to the teams, especially at pep rallies. There are no prejudices, racial or otherwise, that stand out at PHS. I’m sure that there are some hid- den prejudices held by people who stick to them- selves. I feel patriotic when I sing the alma mater or wear crimson and gold. These symbols stand for the love and unity that we share at PHS. — Patricia January 1 i§y Satisfaction and Optimism Are Projected by the ” Class of 78” PHS means more to me than any- | one will ever know. It’s much more than an institution for learning. It is a place I look forward to com- I ing to for friendship as well as for educational endeavor. I have waited many years to become a student at PHS for it has always been an inspiring thought that one day I would be a Crimson Wave. I enjoy being a member of the stu- dent body and also simply being an individual with natural decisions to 1 make. PHS makes it easy for one to be an individual and also a part of the “in crowd . School pride is an omnipresent challenge at PHS and the results are pretty much satisfactory. I take great pride in this school for it helps those who strive for achievement. The atmosphere at PHS has allowed me to be able to communicate with others. Togetherness has always been a constant goal at PHS where school pride has always been common-as it is today. This exemplifies the hard work of those who strive for excellence and put great faith into our school. — Kellie Jenkins Above: After reading the morning paper.
