An Outside Look Eight years ago PHS was designed by Petersburg architect, Gordon B. Galusha. Lack of funds slowed the program down until August 1 972, when the foundation for the $5,924,51 5 (excluding equipment costs) school was laid by the English Construction Company covering 5.5 acres. Student body enrollment for the 1 974- 75 school year is estimated at 1 850. However, the immediate capacity is for 2200, which can be easily expanded by adding classrooms to serve 3,000 students. To accommodate teachers and students during school hours and visitors during school activities, three parking lots have been spaced surrounding the school. 2

An Inside Look Four wings and a gymnasium make up PHS. The Locker Concourse, located in the center of the wings, contains a total of 2,034 lockers. The gymnasium has two full sized courts and seats 3,000 fans comfortably. Classrooms on academic floors are color coded for easy location. The social studies floor, for example, is lime green which corresponds to the walls in each social studies classroom. The school spirit is also fostered throughout the school as the walls at the opposite ends of each hall are painted crimson and gold. Air conditioning is an important added feature. Auditorium seating is 924 with 532 plush red cushion seats. All regular cushion seats include “pull out’’ desk tops. Modern furnishings in the bright roomy cafeteria make it possible to serve 704 students during each of the three lunch breaks. Band and choral rooms include built-in risers and individual sound studios for music students. Curriculum. The school’s curriculum is organized to implement the academic, business, general, and vocation programs of study. Six different courses have been designated from which the student decides to be graduated. These courses are Liberal Arts-Collegiate, Scientific-Collegiate, Collegiate, Business Education, General, and Special Studies. 4
