PETERSBURG HIGH SCHOOi mD.l ENTFR 1 An Outside Look Eight years ago PHS was designed by Petersburg architect, Gordon B. Galusha. Lack of funds slowed the program down until August 1 972, when the foundation for the $5,924,51 5 (excluding equipment costs) school was laid by the English Construction Company covering 5.5 acres. Student body enrollment for the 1 974- 75 school year is estimated at 1 850. However, the immediate capacity is for 2200, which can be easily expanded by adding classrooms to serve 3,000 students. To accommodate teachers and students during school hours and visitors during school activities, three parking lots have been spaced surrounding the school. 2 ■ Jflli Flag Raising Ceremony September 3, 1 974, the day of entrance, a Flag Raisinq ceremony was held. Principal Jimmy F. Sublett and SCA President Leon Parham were program directors. Special guests were School Superintendent, John D. Meade, and School Board Chairman, Mr. Archie D. Love. Also included were Secondary School Supervisor, Edwin M. Betts, three representatives from the American Legion, and five Color Guards from Fort Lee who commanded the Flag Raising ceremony. 3 An Inside Look Four wings and a gymnasium make up PHS. The Locker Concourse, located in the center of the wings, contains a total of 2,034 lockers. The gymnasium has two full sized courts and seats 3,000 fans comfortably. Classrooms on academic floors are color coded for easy location. The social studies floor, for example, is lime green which corresponds to the walls in each social studies classroom. The school spirit is also fostered throughout the school as the walls at the opposite ends of each hall are painted crimson and gold. Air conditioning is an important added feature. Auditorium seating is 924 with 532 plush red cushion seats. All regular cushion seats include “pull out’’ desk tops. Modern furnishings in the bright roomy cafeteria make it possible to serve 704 students during each of the three lunch breaks. Band and choral rooms include built-in risers and individual sound studios for music students. Curriculum. The school’s curriculum is organized to implement the academic, business, general, and vocation programs of study. Six different courses have been designated from which the student decides to be graduated. These courses are Liberal Arts-Collegiate, Scientific-Collegiate, Collegiate, Business Education, General, and Special Studies. 4 Foreign Languages i L . : . u d rv m f j It Through the efforts and the initiative of Ed Betts, classrooms, laboratories, and student centers throughout the school abound colorfully with coordinated, new furniture. It was he who saw that the old was not necessarily a part of the new. Those salvagable items from the old institution will remain there for use when the school is renovated in the future. 7 A new and modern building with the most up-to-date facilities has been established to accommodate the growing senior high student body. Although many of the students will miss the old PHS, this new building, which replaces the 52 year old structure on West Washington Street, promises a higher level of educational activities in a more spacious atmosphere. 8 “A Place For Us” Johnson Road MISSILE Petersburg, Virginia Table Of Contents ■ Theme 10 Student Life 15 Clubs and Organizations 47 Sports 73 Seniors 95 Juniors 137 Sophomores 161 Faculty 183 Ads 209 fAe n vlrre £( SX rs „ k ' r fey x c ' Rojo ' cayl-t Ae v r J 6c S - Tried 4o fir J heir oowj. The main entrance is sufficiently illuminated. Upon entering, you can see clearly into the cafeteria. We never have to complain about seats in the cafeteria because there are more than enough. The hallways are so unfamiliar and seem to be so narrow! (Although Ms. Bailey doesn’t think so.) Do you remember the old auditorium and doubling up in seats? We realize now how much fun that was. Wow, can you believe these colors on the walls? Two floors, less steps, what a relief! We’ll never miss all those steps to the third floor in the old PHS. We have lockers that are crimson, gold, and gray. What a change! Do you remember being told to stay off the grass? Now we’re being told to stay off the grass seeds and hay. Can’t get caught gazing out the windows anymore. There aren ' t many to gaze out. I guess the new PHS gives you something and takes away something as well. We, the students of PHS thank you for the air conditioning on the cool and cold days, and for the heat on the warm and hot days. The addition of classrooms prevents us from walking up Washington Street, when it’s raining cats and dogs, and it also keeps us from swimming across the bridge and wading in three feet of mud, while crossing the athletic field. We are one big family at the new PHS. It is here that we have more equipment to enhance our learning and more space for growing mentally. Varonda Hopkins Our School Here it is ready and new Designed and made just for you. Each dollar, each quarter, nickel and dime Came in handy for us this time. Each tax penny helped put up a brick And it wasn’t long, but rather quick, That P.H.S. was on its way To being the school that’s “A-Okay.” We’re in the lead and number one too. It seems like a dream, but it’s really true. Our school is here and standing steady. We’ve got the spirit of unity down-packed already. “Petersburg High’’ how lovely the name sounds. And dig this, we’re the best school anywhere around. “Thank you,” to each construction worker, plumber And even the brick layer. And above all, those wonderful tax payers. Saying a special thanks to all those that Have helped contribute to the making of a New, fantastic Petersburg High School. jw 19 tv w r ’ 1 1 111 j f Thursday CP ' ISON FRIDAY CRIMSON THURSDAY 1 Crimson Thursday was “The Day for fourteen homecoming candidates and five “Football Sweethearts.” It put an end to days of practice and anticipation. The Homecoming Pageant was held on November 7, 1974. Each girl was required to wear a costume indicative of the club she represented, a gown of her choice and to answer one •unrehearsed question. Each girl also gave a thirty-second speech about her particular club. The Homecoming Queen candidates were Gayle Barfield (ART CLUB), Joyce Bozeman (PEP CLUB), Debbi Chatman (FBLA), Grace Dailey (SCIENCE CLUB), Kay Hardy (DEC A). Yolanda Hayden (MODERN DANCE), Coco Sheffield (SPANISH CLUB), Linda Stallings (FRENCH CLUB), Pauline Stith (INDUSTRIAL ARTS), Lee Turner (CHESS CLUB), Gloria Walker (FHA) and Debbi Wicks (NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY), The Football Sweethearts were Sherene Dent, Francine Cole, Lynn Rainey, Glynice Coleman and Jayne Angell. Crimson Friday — A visitor to P.H.S might have felt an air of excitement, hard work and tension. Last minute preparations were underway. Many classes became float factories turning out an assortment of signs, paper flowers and chicken wire creations. Students could be found in the parking lots assembling floats It was not surprising at all to see students in the halls, leaving to buy materials or, , , Mrs. Hollins at the funeral home to get some artificial grass. Amidst mass confusion, we were able to have a special lunch period for the team. They were treated to cake, punch and ice cream by Mr Sublet f pep rally in the auditorium closed ttu day. Making use of the new resources in the library is one thing you are bound to find students doing. 25 1 1 1 II f tBP 8 fe. ‘W mj II 1S1 27 28 As Your Day Progresses So Do Your Activities 29 30 31 Some say Christmas is becoming too commercialized. Christmas, like other things is what you make it. Here at PHS, students were sent on a two-week vacation with the Christmas feeling. Classroom doors were decorated with ' Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Special Services sponsored the annual Christmas Basket which gave needy families food, clothing, and money. Students exchanged Christmas cards and gifts while others decorated a tree in the lobby. To complete the Pre-Christmas feeling, Mr. Stronach and Mr. McKinley gave a program with carols and music. 32 Kay Hardy and Mike Arcuri model ski wear. What Do You Want In Your Christmas Basket The Fashion Merchandizing class is a new class offered at PHS which seems to have been very successful. It began with 1 4 students. The fashion class had numerous activities during the first semester. Some of which were: to have representatives appear on the “Wilma Smith Show’’; three fashion shows (one of which donations were sent to needy families for Christmas); and a professional model, who was the guest on an assembly in which she demonstrated modeling techniques to the fashion class and the Senior student body. Mrs. Eykes is the instructor of the Fashion Merchandizing class. Frank Preston’s “Night on the Town” wear. Sam Bland and Oscar Gaston model the Crimson Wave basketball uniform. Vashtine Cooke models her slinky knee-length dress with high heels. Debbie Csarnogusky models her pantsuit. 34 36 Grand Opening Of Gymnasium PHS’s The gym was opened to the student body February 7, 1 975. There was excitement in the air! After waiting so long, the students were keyed up and ready to get in there. After everyone was seated Mr. Meade was presented by Ms. Gloria Thornton and he proceeded to cut the ribbon signifying the official opening of the gymnasium. This was witnessed by Mr. Sublett, Mrs. Hollins, Mr. Pegram, Mr. Smith, faculty and all the student body. 37 The department heads of PHS worked very hard to complete their reports for the first round of our anticipated EVALUATION. ALL THE STUDENTS HOPE FOR THEM IS TO GET ALL TOGETHER! n 38 Mrs. Laura Ellen Marks Webb, the oldest known living alumna of PHS, graduated number one and with honors. After graduation she took a teacher’s exam, which today is equal to a college education, to become a teacher. Mrs Webb taught in the county school system for about 1 0 years. Bert Poole, a valedictorian graduate of PHS in 1 973, received his diploma exactly 74 years after his great-aunt. Eliza Davis Royall, a 1901 Alumna of Peabody High School. Mrs, Emily Blick Berry, a 1901 Alumna of Peabody High. Alumni Day, the fourth day of “Teacher Appreciation Week,” celebrated and reunited old and young graduates of both Peabody High and Petersburg High as far back as 1901 . Superintendent John D, Meade addressed Alumni along with special guests and the entire senior class. As the program commenced, the oldest present alumni were recognized; a standing ovation was given to Miss Otelia Harrison, alumna of 1 903. Also present were Miss Miss Otelia Harrison, a 1 903 graduate of Peabody and the oldest alumna present at the Aiumni Day Program. Dr. Edna M. Colson, 1905 graduate of Peabody. Martha Perry and Dr. Edna of 1 904; Mrs. Blanche Harrison, 1905; Miss Sadie Roberts, 1906; Mrs. Theresa W. Green, 1 907; Mrs. Carrie R. Baugh, 1 909; Mrs. Mable T. Harris, 1 91 2; Miss Ruby D. Mrs. Lanier has been in numerous Clubs and Organizations and has traveled extensively abroad. Supt. Meade, Moses Malone, and Mr. Fauntleroy, all alumni. 39 BASKETBALL GAME It was that time of year again when the faculty decides it’s time for their annual committment to physical fitness. Of course everybody realized it was quite a thrill to see these teachers scurry across the floor after a basketball. The female students team was composed of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The Petersburg YMCA team were the opponents of the male teachers. Although our teachers gave a “hilarious performance, the winning teams got the best of the losing ones. Ms. Sears tries to score at the foul line. Ms. Hollins, Sherene Dent, Kelly Hale, Ms. Hall and others look on. James Peerman tries to block a shot of Mr. Allen as other members of the “Y” team watch. Who would have thought that our teachers would actually take timeout to play a game of basketball or even have the nerve to try and score against the experienced players around here? Ms. Sears found that her “ALL STARS are pretty tough competition on the court against their own coach. The referees were Mr. Barksdale and Coach Budlove, who were believed to be somewhat “competent. Yes, it was a sight for sore eyes to view such a display of uncoordination. Through: Week Teacher Appreciation Week, one of the annual activities of seniors, was held the week of October 7-1 1 . MONDAY, OCT. 7, was APPLE FOR THE TEACHER DAY.’’ Each teacher received a shiny red apple. TUESDAY, OCT. 8, was TEACHER HELPER DAY. Many seniors acted as aids for teachers. WEDNESDAY, OCT. 9, was PARENT’S NIGHT. Parents of PHS students were presented a program with refreshments and a tour of the school. THURSDAY, OCT. 1 0, was ALUMNI DAY. It was the day elderly and young graduates of Petersburg High and Peabody got together. FRIDAY, OCT. 1 1 , SCHOOL SPIRIT DAY. Student and Faculty wore school colors and a huge pep rally was held at the end of school. The year started off with a big let down with a loss to Thomas Dale, then winning the next two games. A loss to John Marshall twice and one to Dinwiddie made up a season. We finished in first place with a 14-2 district record and a 14-4 overall record. The team at all times gave 1 00% effort, it should be noted that this very young team won 1 0 straight games on the road to lose its first game in the new gym to Dinwiddie. 87 Wave Matmen Rebuild Burrell Fisher works for the takedown . 88 Behind this year’s team record of 4-7-1 is a young team and a first year coach. Much experience was gained, however with 7 of 1 0 wrestlers placing in the district tournament this year and all but 4 members of the entire squad returning next year.
