!pCTiElSI§MEiS IrillSfa SCKI@®IL There ' s a man at P.H.S. who is known by all. This isn ' t just any man This particular man has had the job of running Petersburg High for the past three years. Every student who has been to this school or is going now would be proud to say he ' s my principal . His voice is the first to be heord over the intercom in the morning and the last to be heard in the evening. He schedules each day for the student body and provides activities to make school interesting. He has a firm sense of discipline, but allows for friendship and time with the students. He is the proud principal of a school that is great academically and athletically. The one and only man who this could be is Mr. Jimmy F. Sublett. Mr. Sublett was born in Thaxton, Virginia, where he attended the schools there before moving to Bedford, Virginia. He graduated from Bedford High School and entered the University of Richmond where he enrolled in ROTC. 1954 was a big year for him. First he graduated from the University with a BA degree in chemistry and biology. Upon gradu- ation he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in ROTC. He en- tered the army in September of that year and served for two years, the majority of which was spent in Korea. He was married in December and ni has two sons, Stepen and Brent. After being discharged from the jjrmy Mr. Sublett taught for one year at E.C. Glass High School. He storted working for Goodyear Tire Rubber Company in June, 1957. In September of 1961 he again entered the teaching profession, but this time at Petersburg High School as a chemistry teacher. He then took a year ' s leave of absence to earn his master ' s degree in Education from the University of Virginia. He returned to Petersburg High where he taught physics for four years. In 1969, Mr. Sublett became assistant principal of PHS for a year followed by a year at Peabody Jr. High where he held the same position. He returned to PHS as Principal in 1971 , Outside of his school work, Mr. Sublett serves on the Deacon Board at Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. His prized possession, other than his family, is his boat, in which he goes fishing whenever possible. We, the 1974 members of the Missile Staff, feel that this yearbook should be dedicated to the one person who has strived so hard to please the student body, Mr. Jimmy F. Sublett. iff Hr T ' ’ -stm atgisr- - $ mi m I i,T7 ' r ' 3 ! r i‘e;s,5r;f a A 4 ' Iw-- TflHIIl my® Mr. Sublett heads a staff of 121 teachers. Helping him supervise are the three assistant principals. Specific duties divided among them include discipline and atten- dance of students; textbook rentals; classroom visita- tions; field trip approvals; administrative supervision for classes; instruction and substitutes in subject areas; teacher parking; fire drills; traffic control; and student lockers. Jimmy F. Sublett, Principal Richard Pegram John Curling Franklin Smith ) 1 The administrative aids perform their individual duties in offices scat- tered throughout the school plant. Mr. Caldwell and Mrs. Wilkerson must divide themselves between the PHS ' s. Mr. Kilbourne, Athletic Director, handles all of the intricacies of our extensive athletic program. Everything involved in a single contest from uniforms to field maintenance, from referees to special police must be arranged by him. Mr. Caldwell ' s main concern is truancy. Home visits are a part of his daily schedule. Working closely with him is Mrs. Hollins, Student Services Director. Mr. Whitaker as placement officer provides a future for PHS graduates. Every student has the opportunity for gainful employment through his services. Thursday Friday Mrs. Wilkenson attends her clinic. Robert Kilbourne Harriet Wilkenson, R.N. Joe R. Caldwell Elva M. If tfie student is to be successful in school, and ultimately in his work, he must have a sense of commitment to both his education and his occupational aspirations. If he is to make sensible commitments, he must first learn about himself and his capabilities, the society he lives in, and the world of work. The experiences gained from, this program have aided in knitting a close unit, developing a sense of responsibility, dedication and a friendly spirit of cooperation and team work. Many of the content items for industrial arts have persisted throughout the history of mankind as a matter of vital impor- tance and primary cultural forces in the evolving societies. Based upon these essential prerequisites Industrial Arts in this plan is perceived as a curriculum area that focuses on those phases of career education which deal with industry — its organization materials, occupa- tions, processes and products. In each class a particular industry is studied such as transportation, wood, aluminum, steel, or plastic to pro- vide as a basis for construction of projects that are developed in the laboratory. In addition, the students established line and staff personnel plans which are implemented to provide a wider interpretation of the or- ganization, procedures, problems, and contributions of industry. This role-playing activity enlarges the realm of student participation in keep - ing with his interests, aspirations and capabilities. It also develops con- cepts related to the organization of industry, productivity, occupational opportunities, automation labor-management relations, financial struc- ture and the changing role of the individual in industry. This program attemp ts to prepare each individual to cope with the requirements of liv- ing in a technological era. In the business area, the student ends with an up-to-date program in business mathematics with possible electives in the data-processing program of the technical section. A new college bound program was begun two years ago at Peabody High School with a year of general mathematics and Algebra I being the credits. Plane Geometry is begun in the junior year rather than the sophomore year. The first students in this program are taking Plane Geomentry this year, and the entire program will be evaluated at the end of this school year. More students are electing the senior mathematics courses in Trigonometry, Advanced Algebra, and Analytic Geometry. One need that should be satisfied for all graduating seniors is a course in Consumer Mathematics. This course is under study by the department as well as one in Probability and Statistics. Everything from Computer Science to college bound typing is offered in the curriculum. Students may select one of the four block programs: (1) Stenography, (2) Office Services, (3) Clerk Typist, (4) Data Processing. From any of these blocks, an individual may choose to enter the Cooperative Office Education opportunity. Employability is the ultimate goal of all our students. Now, at the close of the 1974 Championship, we realize that though the faces of the players change, the quality of the team never chonges. At this time we stop to hail you, but most of all to thank you for topping off the best year yet at PHS with the best basketball team. To us, the entire team is All-American and each player is our special champion. You have given us something to really be proud of, and for that, you mean the world to us. We will be able to look upon our lost year at P.H.S. as one of the excitement, enfoyment and pride in our city, our school, our fine coaching staff and each person who has contributed so very much to us. We thank you for providing the spark needed to kindle our spirit flame and our flame of everlasting pride. Thank you Coach Peal, for being the guiding light to success. Thank you coaching staff, for putting the drive behind the team. And thank you Moses Malone and your Crismson Machine for making us State Champions fo 1974. Jeweler And Optician 218 N. Sycamore Street Petersburg, Virginia 23803 ilVi This is it . , . the, 1974 Missile. This has been an enjoyable year for me because most of the staff was new, but they were also dedicated and hard working. Adding to this was the fact that the staff got along well and helped each other. My greatest thanks to Mrs. HugatS and Mrs. Neibuhr for their understanding, advice, and general support. I also want to thank Mr. Sublett for his time and support. Many thanks to Mrs. Marie Maniego and her staff. Without them we wouldn ' t hove had such o great theme section and division pages. To the entire staff, my thanks for your undying efforts and invaluable time spent in the Missile Room. Special thanks to my two co-editors Annie Garris and Bessie Prude for their choices and decisions that made a successful earbook. I would also like to thank those who worked with the staff but remain unmentioned. I wish to thank Mr. John Perry and Hunter Publishing Company for their invaluable advice and patience. Also, special thanks to the many businesses which support the Missile through ads. I wish the very best of luck to the 1975 staff, I sincerely hope they will be more organized and produce a great book. With cooperation, hard work, and patience it will not be a hard task. Good Luck!
