English Adds Cul ture To Curriculum Encountering poetry and deep liter- ary works such as Chaucer ' s Canterbury Tales and Hawthorne ' s The Scarlet Letter, the students develop the ability to interpret underlying meanings conveyed by such tech- niques as symbolism and irony. The English department, headed by Miss Elizabeth Lanier, has added a journalism class to train students to develop skills in journalistic writing and intelligent reading.
