Res Rra Petersburg High 050 School . M691 The Missile. (1971) c. 1 Petersburg Public Library Petersburg, VA 23803-4257 MISSILE Petersburg High School Petersburg, Virginia Vol. XVI 2 Unique Moments Relived By All Occurring once in one ' s life- time, the solar eclipse is like passing time which must be recorded so one can relive those moments. Follow the 1971 Missile edition and see events which are shared between friends and teachers. 3 School Life Overflows With Emotion Many people from all walks of life have strolled the halls of PHS. This solid foundation is a place where happiness and sadness are shared among friends and teachers. Like the sun and moon combining to make the solar eclipse, students attending PHS make school life what it really is. 4 5 Kindness Initiates Friendsh If the sun and moon combine and achieve a solar eclipse once during our lifetime or if a basketball player plays in a game to the best of his ability, then each must feel as this anony- mous person wrote. “I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” 8 Teannwork Bogins With Individuals Each individual with his own personality makes up a team of individuals working together toward the common goal. Since this team shall not pass this way again as the same team, each supporter expresses excitement on seeing this particular team achieve unity to its fullest. Functioning as separate bodies like the individuals on the team, the sun and moon travel their own paths until they cross upon each other. Combining the sun and moon to achieve a solar eclipse brings each body to its fullest union with each other. Then each one continues on its course just as each individual on the team does. 9 Through Unity We Achieve Our Goals How exciting it is for people to work together in unity. It is not a matter of chance, but a matter of choice. As natural as the eclipse of the sun, everything is in order working toward a common goal. 12 Knowledge Gained By Sharing Ideas 13 14 ACADEMICS Many students may be seen walking together through the halls of PHS. Students are individuals who work alone at times as well as together. Each one present is striving for a goal in which learning plays an important role. Although the sun and moon are two separate bodies which function indi- vidually, on occasions they come together and create the total eclipse. If each individual works separately to develop his own skills and abilities to make this combining a success just as the sun and moon do, soon a total union occurs like the total eclipse of the sun. i I Administration Aids Consolidation Every day many decisions which affect student life at PHS are made in the administrative headquarters. Supervised by our principal Mr. Edwin M. Betts, Jr., and our assistant principals, Mr. Albert Jones and Mr. Frank Teass, this office is the kernel of all school activity. Working with the interim council to organize the consolidation of the student bodies of Petersburg and Peabody High Schools has been one of the administration ' s main objectives this year. The renovated office was provided with a new air conditioning system so that the administrators could work in comfort. Moreover, students had identification cards made at pre-registration. Smooth operation of the school depends greatly on the office secretaries. Aiding both teachers and students, the secretaries are a vital part of the staff. Having the intercom system revised has helped both the office and faculty. Seeking new ways of improvement is the constant thought of our administrators. Guidance Aides Students With Careers Choosing the right course is an important decision for every student. PHS is fortunate to be staffed with a guidance department which takes an interest in every student. The remodeled guidance offices enable the counselors to have more room. This year Mrs. West, Mrs. Turner, and Miss Morgan are responsible for two grade levels. Miss Bailey, assisted by Miss Warner, counsels seniors; Mr. Aldridge is the vocational counselor. Also, this year Miss Warner is responsible for new students. This year a new department. Special Pupils Services, has been added. Mr. Zaruba, Mrs. Hollins, Mr. Kilbourne, and Mrs. Best have been assigned to this department. This department ' s main objective is to aid the teachers and student body. English Adds Cul ture To Curriculum Encountering poetry and deep liter- ary works such as Chaucer ' s Canterbury Tales and Hawthorne ' s The Scarlet Letter, the students develop the ability to interpret underlying meanings conveyed by such tech- niques as symbolism and irony. The English department, headed by Miss Elizabeth Lanier, has added a journalism class to train students to develop skills in journalistic writing and intelligent reading. All English teachers work toward the common goal of developing skills in what is probably the most important subject outside the classroom. Miss Lanier chuckles at a student ' s reply. Mrs. S. Willcox English Janet Smith receives instructions from Mrs. Maniego on her theme. 21 Math Keeps With Changing World It has been predicted that in ten years our math system will be revolutionized! From the study of simple addition to the most involved theories of calculus, the math department under the leader- ship of Mr. Burton Alexander endeavors to provide the student with confidence in his ability. This year there is a staff of math teachers especially trained to show and teach math for those enrolled in the business course. As today ' s modern world is rapidly increasing in complexity, the program is offered to compete with the progression. Mr. Alexander stresses the importance of trigonometry to his students. During algebra class Mrs. Young tries to keep Sonny Clark ' s attention. Burton Alexander Miss E. Moyer Trigonometry Geometry Mrs. O. Ridley Robert Tyler Geometry Math George Walker J r. Mrs. K. Individual and group experiments are essential not only in chemistry, but also in physics. Testing the pupil ' s knowledge and ability, physics culmi- nates the science curriculum of biolo- gy, advanced biology, and chemistry. The science depa rtment, headed by Mr. Jerome Batts, facilitates an accu- rate interpretation of reality. To introduce indiviuuals to the ultimate values of science, teachers have acquired overhead projectors and new equipment. Kent Yandle and Dully Barney watch as Mr. Gore demonstrates circular motion. m Amid the contusion, Mrs. Swinton helps chemistry students prepare their experiments. History Records Past, Present, Future Howard Cooley cross-examines Abraham Gilliam, a hostile witness in a mock trial. Attempting to meet the demanding challenge of familiarizing students with the principles of human behavior, the history department places greater stress on understanding than on mem- orizing. In addition to History 5, which is a controversial course of current events, History History 6 is being taught. This elective traces the history of the Amer- ican Negro to the present day. Films, overhead projectors, and magazines are also used to promote individual understanding of the world of the past, present, and future. Mrs. F. Coleman Geography Robert Davis Mrs. ). Vitally important in a world that ' s constantly becoming smaller is the knowledge of languages, the basis of all human relationships. The foreign language department, headed by Mrs. Vinson, offers French, Spanish, and Latin. Working in the new language laboratory provides students with the opportunity to hear a foreign language spoken by native people. With records, tape recorders, flash cards, and new Spanish workbooks, teachers are able to instruct students better. Art is also a way of communicating. It inspires sensitivity and imagination in the students of PHS and teaches pupils to look at things with a different perspective. Through singing and playing musical instruments to sculpturing and paint- ing, students learn to express their thoughts and feelings. 1 Mrs. Ward gives individual assistance in Spanish to Wanda McKinnon. This is one of the daily yells sounded by our gym classes. Knowledge of sports, health, driver ' s education, and first aid can be obtained in our physical education department. For the first time this year, behind- the-wheel training in driver ' s educa- tion classes is being offered. Also, we are extending the physical education course one half a semester longer. With the introduction of new uni- forms and the extension of each period, our athletic director, Mr. Kilbourne, and department chairman. Miss Kiser, are making physical educa- tion a rewarding as well as an enjoy- able experience. 32 With a supreme effort Tommy Beckwith reeceives a pass. I Carl Peal Miss C. Technical And Domestic Skills Developed With 13,931 volumes in the school library, Mrs. Rhea Dodge, head librari- an, Mrs. Douthat, assistant librarian, and Mrs. Lott, typist, strive to provide an up-to-date library. For the first time Mrs. Dodge sold paperback editions for the students ' and faculty ' s personal use. Also, Home Economics has a new addition called Child Care which is taught by Mrs. Cooper. The classroom is in the new vocational building, and it has all the modern facilities to teach this course. ZZZZ of saws and bang, bang of hammers create a surprising atmo- sphere for fhose interested in building a better world. Their biggest project is a 12 X 14 foot small model house. By taking this course, students will some- day be able to build houses. Evidence of the Community spirit of special education students is the highly successful Christmas project in which they collect food, clothing, and toys for the needy. Expanding Interests Create New Vocational Classes Equipped with some of the finest teachers, the vocational department of PHS has succeeded in preparing the students for the selected careers. This year two new classes, Child Care and Electricity, have been added to the vocational department in the in- terest of fhe students. The invaluable courses such as plumbing, electronics, and power mechanics are still being taught to develop special skills. Striving to prepare the students for their future careers, the vocational department is capable of meeting the demands of the local industries. With such new materials as electric elevators, dishwashing machine, mixer, potato peeler, and new refrigerators, our food is served to us at just the right time and just the right temperature. Also, with the new ceiling in the cafeteria and more lunch periods, eating lunch at PHS seems to be much more comfortable and less noisy. If there is anything that needs repairing, our custodians are willing and ready to work. With a new special type of washer, our school is kept ex- ceptionally clean and pleasant. Mrs. Myrtilla Geter has the important job of keeping PHS clean. 41 Mr. Wall enjoys another ex- citing meal in the PHS cafe- teria. Coach Porach finds Mad Magazine more interesting than grading government papers. Mrs. Donovan blushes as the violinist plays Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny. Mr. Alexander jokingly excorts a stowaway from his trig class. 42 Individuality Captured In Offguard Moments Many teachers express their person- alities through actions which make them individuals. Expressions of concern, sternness, joy, sincerity, and anger may be seen on their faces at one moment during their teaching ca- reer. Teachers perform their duties without recognition; however, through their enthusiasm and energy, they instill in their students the desire to learn. Thus, the students are grateful to be exposed to excellent teachers who fulfill our quest for knowledge. Mr. Stronach courteously gives the cashier the money for his lunch. Mrs. Frederick takes a few minutes from her busy schedule to work on her needlepoint. With the ringing of the dis- missal bell, Mrs. Marshall becomes ecstatic. 43 44 STUDENT LIFE Participating in school activities which bring unity among students, one develops new interests, both scholastic and cultural. Like the sun and moon having their own characteristics, each student is an individual with his own personality and traits. Therefore, students make school life what it is, and the sun and moon bring about the solar eclipse. The foundation on which the school is built may look solid and sturdy, but if there isn ' t any union among the student body, there is no school. By working together and solving problems in class and outside the classroom, students become closely united. We can learn from one another and achieve a satisfaction each one wishes to receive. 45 Seniors At Work And Play All work and no play could make sen- ior life very dull; however, this is not the case with the seniors at PHS. Reenacting Chaucer ' s Canterbury Tales adds color to Mrs. Maniego ' s English lit- erature class. Government classes come alive with a mock murder trial. Besides classroom antics, seniors find delight in sundry diversions. In the midst of all their activities and anticipations, se- niors find time to concentrate on the art of studying. Judge Pam Shell and Denise Henderson listen to Priscilla Tatum ' s testimony. Between classes Wanda Womack mulls over her problems while Altro Walker watches. 46 Strolling musicians highlight the evening meal at Mama Leone ' s for |eri lames and Mrs. Donovan. Along with Mr. and Mrs. Donovan, Columbia dele- gates begin classes. Brad Peebles, Troy Fobbs, Garry Curtis, and Albert Mitchell were PFHS ' s representatives to Boys ' State. 48 Trips Enhance School Year Enthusiasm and spirit were seen in each of the four delegate ' s eyes when the Missile received first place at Columbia. At the workshops each del- egate obtained new yearbook ideas. Enjoying the social life of New York, the delegates ate exotic dinners at Mama Leone ' s and Hawaii Kai. More- over, entertainment was enjoyed at Radio City Music Hall and at the Broadway play Hello Dolly in which Ethel Merman was starring. Following this great experience, the delegates returned with many memories. Delegates from PHS were represented at Girls ' and Boys ' State. Boys ' State at William and Mary was attended by Brad Peebles, Carry Curtis, Troy Fobbs, and Albert Mitchell. Government and athletics were stressed at this convention. Girls ' State attended by Bee Cumby, Pam Shell, and Caroline Stowe also stressed government procedures. Each girl represented a city. Thus, each city went through the procedures for getting Congressional representatives. it rt f Delegates Betsy Winston, Recia Wilson and Jeri James find the ice skating in Central Park facinating. Caroline Stowe, Pam Shell, and Bee Cumby gained ex- perience at Girl ' s State. 49 Pep Rallies Spark Enthusiasm Further carrying out the theme of “Let ' s Do It Together, the weekly pep rallies boosted the morale of the new Wave team. Beginning with a pep rally the night before the first game, the cheerleaders in coalition with the band and majorettes helped to create enthusiasm for the success of the games. Excitement was seen on the faces of all who attended the pep rallies. Closing with the school Alma mater, the pep rallies proved that the students of PHS are doing it together. Cheered by the students, Coach Tyler gives his outlook on the game. ! Vlip 50 Chad Scott, Ruth Jones, and Karen Kelly radiate enthusi- asm. Spirit Skyrockets At PHS Because of their practice, the majorettes give a superb performance. Spirit soars among P.H.S. students. 52 CAROUSEL Stirs Emotions Throughout Audience “If I had more sense, Mr. Snow, I wouldn ' t have had nine kids. This is only one of the many lines which brought laughter and tears to the audi- ence during the performance of “Carousel. On April 24 and 25 of 1970, Rogers and Hammerstein ' s “Carousel was presented by the students of PHS. Set in a small New England town, this play captivated the attention of the audi- ence from the beginning pantomine scene to the ending graduation scene. Not only were the dramatics excep- tional, but also the music, choreography, and scenery were out- standing. Because of the complexity of the plot and the display of ability on the part of all the students, “Carousel brought roaring applause and standing ovation at the close of the curtain calls at each performance. As David Minton lies dying, Nancy Howard tries to comfort him. Susie Auders, as Carrie, describes her darling Mr. Snow as the others look on. Tommy Moore is embar- rassed by his girlfriend ' s sweet remarks. 53 You ' ll Never Walk Alone, sings Terry Redmond as she tries to console bereaved Nancy Howard. Disgusted with Susie Auders ' flirtations, Tommy Moore releases his anger. Engrossed in a game of 21, Kermit Renwick and David Minton wait to rob Mr, Bascombe. New Queens For 1971 With tears of ecstasy the 1971 queens of PHS proudly accepted their crowns and titles. The election of three Miss Crimson Waves was a first for PHS. Selected from each grade level, the queens, Miss Wanda McKinnon, Miss Karen Bates and Miss Roslyn Pulliam, won after a series of three elections. Another feature of the 1971 year was the election of Miss Christmas Seal. Working with the Southside Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association, the Interim Council conducted the voting for the school queen. Chosen as Miss Christmas Seal of PHS was Maureen Williamson. The final highlighf of this year was the annual Junior Miss Pageant sponsored by the Senior class in conjunction with the Petersburg Jaycees. The 1971 queen was Miss Bee Cumby, while Susan Auders and Diane Stuart were the runners up. Also Betsy Short was chosen by the candidates as Miss Congeniality. The Crimson Waves, Wanda McKinnon, Karen Bates, and Roslyn Pulliam carry their roses. 57 Winners of the 1970 Optimist Awards are Charles Kates, lulia Ellis, Pam Shell, Malcolm Covington, Roger Pegram, and Hedy Seligman. Outstanding senior Pam Shell is SCA State President and National Merit Finalist. Seniors Honored At PHS One of the most outstanding honors bestowed upon a PHS senior is that of being elected State SCA president. Pam Shell has attended the National Convention in Indianapolis, state wordshops, and district meetings, and since April, she has traveled over a distance of 3000 miles. Recognizing students who excel in music, athletics, art, citizenship, and scholarship, the Petersburg Optimist Club presents its awards during Youth Appreciation Week. The students are recommended by their teachers and are fine examples of the American youth. As a result of the National Merit Scholarship Test, several students received commendation for their efforts. Pam Shell was named a National Merit Finalist. Also recognized were Veronica Fauntieroy, Debra Rainey, and Andre Baptiste, who were semi-finalists in the National Merit Achievement Program for Negro students. Presented by the Goober Pep Social Club, the Mary T. Perkins Latin Award was presented to the person in his third year of Latin having the highest overall average. National Achievement Semifinalists, Andre Baptiste, Veronica Fauntieroy, and Debbie Rainey, do research on Velasquez. 59 During the Thanksgiving Assembly all listen attentively to the Thanksgiving message. Bonita Hill prepares to start the music for the underclass sock hop. 60 Vocational students E.C. Vaughan and Denny Williams practice their masonry skills by constructing a house. 1971: A Memorable Year As 1971 comes to an end, students reflect on the memorable events which they have experienced. For some this yearterminated five years of school life; for others, it was the beginning of a new thing. All the students discovered that they can do it together. As a member of the concert band, Kevin Scarborough plays his sax. 61 62 ACTIVITIES Through club membership an indi- vidual may broaden his knowledge in many fields and develop close friendships. These extra-curricular ac- tivifies add vigor and spirit to the routine of every school day. Upon reaching a total eclipse, part of the atmosphere is the corona, or crown — a wispy, glowing envelope of parficles thaf stream from the sun. Our school life also glows when we achieve complete union. Interim Council Coordinates Activities Under the leadership of Pam Shell as President, Ronald Powell as Vice- Pre sident, and Bert Poole as Secretary, the Interim Council has established the procedures by which class boards are elected. In addition, this council has adopted a basketball code, a soft- drink machine regulation, and a disci- plinary action system to replace demerits. Its main job has been writing up a new constitution. Composed of six seniors, four juniors, and four sophomores, this Interim Council has been organized for the consolidation of student bodies of Peabody and Petersburg High Schools. Sponsored by Interim Council, a sock hop was given to each grade level. A concert was performed for the student body before Christmas by the Virginia State Band. Delivering baskets to needy families was the council ' s main Christmas project. Cornell Barlow aids the Interim Council in preparing the Christmas basket pro- ject. 64 First row: H. Cooley, T. What an inspiring sight to see our twenty-seven vivacious cheerleaders, under the leadership of Caroline Stowe and Wanda Fitzgerald, keeping the spirit of PHS rolling! With the help of Miss Mary Bailey, these girls strive to build the spirit through yells and pep rallies before athletic events. Opening the 1970 football season with a pep rally at Cameron Field, these cheerleaders led in the presentation of the football team, coaches, band, and majorettes. Every spring, competitive tryouts are held and contestants are judged on the basis of pep, personality, appear- ance, and ability to execute cheers. Through these active students the spirit of PFHS rolls with the Crimson Wave. As the spirit mounts, Wanda Fitzgerald leads the crowd in a cheer. Cheerleaders gather before a pep rally to plan their agenda. Composed of seventy-five lettered players, the club, under the faithful guidance of Coach jenkins, helps the school administration whenever they are needed. Each year the club presents the school with a gift, and each spring a banquet is held for recognition of the members for their excellent sports abilities. Having a float in the Christmas parade gave the Varsity Club further recognition. During the Christmas holidays, the players also delivered baskets to needy families. These girls are led by their co-heads, Cheryl Jordan and Shelley Stephens, and the assistant heads, Barbara Johnson and Jill Redford. Many parades such as the Christmas parade and the Veterans ' Day parade are enhanced by their participation. At several games, the senior majorettes twirled fire. This year the majorettes are serving as ushers for the band and glee club concerts and a spring musical. In the spring, band officers and current majorettes select new members on the basis of poise, per- sonality, and original routine. Even during the summer, majorettes devote many hours to practice, which results in excellent half-time shows at football games. Betsy Short ' s dancing ability is reflected in a majorette routine. 91 Poise And Personality Exhibited By Majorettes As Lela Hersh twirls her baton, she cheers for the mighty Wave team. 92 Spirit Heightened By PHS Band Marching in the Christmas parade, the band delighted the crowds with joyful music. 93 Christmas Concert Band, First row: J. The spirits of the various holiday seasons are emphasized by the club, especially Christmas and Thanksgiving. These students jointly perform with the band in the Annual Awards Con- cert. A select group of about twenty students from the Glee Club comprises the Pro Musica Ensemble. This year the Pro Musica delighted the audience at the junior Miss Pageant, and they sang Christmas Carols at Kenner Army Hospital. Various members of the Glee Glub have participated in regional as well as state choir. Mr. Marsh exemplifies his talents by playing the piano and directing. However, as a team prepares for a game, the team is a whole striving for a common purpose. One may see an expression of disgust, happiness, or sorrow on the face of both players and supporters after a game. As one sees the expression of defeat on the face of both players and supporters, it ' s like a penumbra in which a partial eclipse has occurred. The sun and moon haven ' t fully worked together toward a total eclipse, just as the players haven ' t fully worked toward a victory. 99 Wave Has Outstanding Performers Equipped with a very tough defense, the mighty Wave also possessed an effective offense. Because David Nelson, the stand out tackle, received an ankle injury and was out for the season, the team was not a complete unit. Although plagued by minor injuries, the team, nevertheless, managed to compile a record of five wins, two ties, and three losses. For their excellent ability, Malcolm Covington, Charles Kates, and Cornell Barlow placed on the starting line of the district team. Also, Cornell Barlow and Charles Kates made the regional team. Wave Enthusiastic Despite Scores The 1970-71 Petersburg Crimson Wave, under the direction of Coach Carl Peal, finished the regular season with a record of nine wins and nine losses. This record helped the Crimson Wave to tie Midlothian for fourth place in the final Central District standings. The defending Central District champions started slowly and went into the Christmas holidays with a lowly record of two wins and three losses. The two week break gave the Wave a chance to get together, and they came out and won three of their first four games after the holidays. With the momentum starting to go their way, the Wave next met its arch- rival, undefeated Hopewell. Playing their best game of the season, the Wave was on the verge of a great upset before losing the game in the final 23 seconds, 70-67. After this heartbreaking loss, the Crimson Wave finished by winning only four of the last eight games. lumping for the Wave, Gerome Raines epitomizes a good center. 105 Out-maneuvering Mike James, Al Mitchell adds two points at the Wave ' s score. Grappling for a loose ball, Charles Bland comes up with a big play for the mighty Wave. 106 Individual Standouts Spark Wave Displaying a classic style, Paul Tudor stretches for another two points. Forward Peyton Simmons attempts to block a Manchester goal and succeeds. 107 J. V. Basketball, First row: S. Taylor, B. Wilson, R. Hanford, R. Walker, D. Washington, M. Edinburgh. Second row: T. [ 45B Up 1 Teamwork Proves Effective For JV ' s Awesome is the one word that describes the 1970-71 edition of Petersburg High ' s JV team. They had it all together-fantastic teamwork, indi- vidual effort, and a great coach. This combination almost proved to be unbeatable as the baby Wave finished with a 15-1 record. To do this the Wave scored 481 field goals to their opponents ' 289. They shot a remark- able 51 from the foul line, and then had a 23.2 difference in points per game average. This year ' s team had a few stand- outs, but was still fantastically well rounded with two players, Walker and Malone, averaging double figures. This team had five standouts, the starting five, and 12 most improved players. A great team and great coach proved to be an unbeatable combination for the baby Wave. Coach Hayes has good reason to be satisfied with his team. Bernard Wilson executes a beautiful lay up while his opponent watches. 108 Taking advantage of his height, Mike Howard comes up with a key rebound. At the beginning of the season Coach Smith set the goal of a championship for his team, and they won it for him. Howev- er, it was no easy task, and the Wave ' s mat-men had to fight all the way. After defeating Thomas Dale and Colonial Heights in hotly contended matches, the Wave proceeded to roll over their opponents. However, they lost one match and that was to Huguenot, a Capital District power. Petersburg ' s Ike Burrows, Mike Moore, William Winfield, and Silas Leonard captured District championships in their perspective classes, and Leonard also added a regional championship to his belt. Six men from Petersburg, Ike Burrows, Mike Moore, William Winfield, Elstron Barnes, Rodney Alston, and Silas Leo nard qualified to participate in the state tournament. William Winfield was the only man from the central region to reach the final. He placed fourth out of a field of 60 wrestlers. Setting up a pinning combi- nation, William Winfield muscles his man. PHS ended up with six wins, nine losses, and one tie on the ball diamond this year. Showing good response with the bat were team captain Mike Bristow, Lanford Pritchett, and Dennis Cole. The team ' s weak points were pitching and the infield, but the experienced outfield and catching made up the difference. The Wave jumped off to a flying start by winning the first three out of five games. PHS beat Thomas Dale and Hopewell, top contending teams for the district title. These defeats caused the title race to be very close at the end of the season. Captain Mike Bristow anxiously awaits the throw on a close play at first. Dennis Cole demonstrates his tremendous hitting ability. 115 Even in the tense moments of a match, Fred Ende manages to keep calm. New Players Develop Skills The Petersburg High School golf team began the 1970 season with a shaky start because of the loss of three experienced players. Although less ex- perienced linksmen replaced them, this did not hinder the team with five wins, six losses, and one tie. This was the first year that the Petersburg team had ever defeated the team from Meadowbrook. Ending the year in a tie with Thomas Dale, Petersburg High School unfortunately missed the regional playoffs. Although our tennis team lost nine games and won only one, there was great sportsmanship displayed. Consisting of first year men, the team lacked experience, but enthusiasm took its place. 1971 GOLF April 1 Midlothian, Meadowbrook A April 5 Hopewell, Prince George A April 6 Thomas Dale, Dinwiddie H April 20 Meadowbrook, Midlothian H April 22 Prince George, Hopewell A April 26 Dinwiddie, Thomas Dale A April 27 Manchester H April 29 Meadowbrook, Midlothian A May 3 Prince George, Hopewell H May 4 Thomas Dale, Dinwiddie A May 6 Manchester A 1 16 Kent Yandle executes a perfect drive for the Crimson Wave. in 1971 TENNIS March 22 Manchester A March 24 Thomas Dale H March 29 Meadowbrook H March 31 EHopewell H April 5 Midlothian A April 7 Manchester H April 12 Thomas Dale A April 14 Meadowbrook A April 19 Hopewell A April 21 Midlothian H With great skill, Lloyd Sand- ers blasts his way out of a trap. Each student has brought joy, sorrow, and disgust into the halls of PHS. More- over, each student present at PHS has been obtaining an education tor a rewarding future, just as the sun and moon have been striving for a long time tor a total eclipse. 119 Senior Class Sets New Tradition Beginning a new era with the consoli- dation of two schools brings the senior class to the largest size ever. With trials and tribulations, the senior class succeeded in having a senior week and senior prom. Through the years of high school, each senior has felt joy, sorrow, tension, and relief which are all culminated in the last year. Moreover, leaving a newly combined football team at the last ath- letic event makes the seniors realize it ' s a time for looking back at high school days as well as preparing for the future. For the first time this year seniors may be seen graduating in blue and white robes which they may take home along with their diplomas for remembrances. Mike Elmore Thinking back on the ' 71 Missile, I remember many incidents both hu- morous and trying. Wading through the stacks of pictures and layouts on our living room floor, I can still see S usie Auders asleep in the chair, and Yvonne Puryear stretched out on the floor at 5:00 a.m. Both were complete- ly exhausted from doing ad pages, captions, and headlines all night long. I can visualize Diane Stuart identifying class pictures with her eyes half open, and Wendy Evans shaking her wrists after finally finishing the Senior Direc- tory. Besides those members previously mentioned, I ' d especially like to thank Hugh Vaughan for the enormous job of taking, developing, and printing all the pictures used in the Missile, Arhelia Jackson for her prompt materi- al, Jeri James for writing the copy, and Joan Ogburn and Mike Elmore for always being willing to do the many odd jobs so important to the producation of a yearbook. Diane Stuart Statistics Editor Amelia Jackson Index Editors Hope Walton, Altro Walker Head Typist Wendy Evans ASSISTANTS PHOTOGRAPHERS Tyris Collins, Robert Martz, Wanda Womack always there to guide us and offer helpful suggestions. The interest and advice of Mr. John Perry, the Hunter representative, and Mr. Edwin Betts, our principal, helped to make the Missile an accurate and memorable account of school and community life of ' 71. And finally I would like to thank the businessmen and private persons who have supported the Missile through ads and contributions. The new and changing conditions in the world today are evident at PHS this year. The many changes in activities and life at our school made our job more difficult than in previous years. The stumbling blocks we faced; how- ever, made us even more determined to make the ' 71 Missile a reality. Our cover was chosen to emphasize the change — the gradual understanding and coming together of all men to make this world better for all who live in it. To those replacing us next year, I wish a most rewarding and fun-filled year of school life. Betsy 235 II Communication Cultivates Understanding To gain knowledge many students may be seen studying into the wee hours of the night. One who does study shows the desire to reach a goal in life. Al- though one may study alone, he also talks things over with others. Communication, whether through books or peo- ple, brings satisfaction to each individual. By watching the eclipse of the sun. one can gain some knowl- edge of this particular event. One can see how two separate bodies are eclipse. able to unite in a total 236 237 From Here We Face Our Destinies As the world turns, time is passing by, and each individual sees a school year come to a close. Looking back over the year, one remembers the excite- ment at games, new friendships at school, and the trials and trib- ulations during the year. Though this school year comes to a close, time and life continue as new friends are made and as new obstacles confront us. Life continues just as the sun and moon will continue rotating and combining in many solar eclipses. 239 • Winston-Solem HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY • North Carolina CHARLES R.
