E I958 SPHINX Volume XVII PUBLISHED BY The Senior Class PETERSBURG HARRIS HIGH SCHOOL PETERSBURG, ILLINOIS The I958 Sphinx Petersburg Harris High School Petersburg, Illinois . ,ff Foreword Living in the heart of the Lincoln country, we, the class of 1958, chose Abraham Lin- coln as the theme of our Sphinx. Throughout our book we have quoted sayings il- lustrating his widom and humor. We are proud to live in this beautiful, historical community, world-known because Lincoln, too, lived here. In this present ana of uncertainty, we repledge our faith in Lincoln's ideal of a land of togethemess and 'a country of the people. I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. -Abraham Lincoln WE The faculty and student body honor Harry J. Aden, President of the First National Bank and an ,alumnus of Petersburg Harris High School. Shortly after his graduation from Harris High School, he began working in the Bank and has been associated with it ever since. For more than fifty years he has maintained 'an .abiding interest in the betterment of this community. Last year Mr. Aden established a scholarship fund from which an award of S400 is to be made annually to a member of the graduating class of Harris High School for use in the first year of college. Ronald Moss, who won the first award, is now studying at the University of Illinois. We are especially proud to have this scholarship resource made possible by one of the alumni of Harris High School. We gratefully 'acknowledge Mr. Aden's generosity and commend him for his own success. May our children and our children's children to a thousand generations continue to enjoy the benefits conferred upon us by a united country. A. A. Lincoln PAGE THIRTEEN Senior Class Histor August 30, 1954, found eighty enterprising students entering the portals of P.H.H.S. Their first official act was to elect their leaders. The officers selected were President, Leonard Eddingsg Vice-president, Mary Arm Brass, Secretary, Jim Harrisg and Treasurer, Paula Chcrry. The Student Council representative was John Finney. Their sponsors for their first year were Mrs. Wood, Mr. LaHann, and Mr. Worthington. The Freshman Reception and the class party were the most memorable events of the year. The next autumn seventy-two of the original eighty freshmen were back again, this time as sophomores. Elected to lead them through the second year of their search for knowledge were David Quinn, President, Leonard Eddings, Vice-president, Jim Harris, Secretary, Norm.an Powell, Treasurer, Student Council representatives, Mary Ann Brass and P. J. Grusbol'. The sponsors were Mrs. Peterson, Mr. Hilderbrand, and Mr. McKee. The social highlights of the year were the Sophomore Stunt, under the able direction of Mrs. Peterson, and the class party. In the fall of 1956, with half of their high school career now behind them, sixty juniors were determined to push onward toward their goal. Getting off to a goo-ti start, they elected as leaders President, Leonard Eddingsg Vice-president, Mary Ann Brass, Secretary-Treasurer, Karen Moss, Student Council representatives, David Quinn, Jim Harris, and P. J. Grosboll. The junior sponsors were Mrs. Satorius, Miss Holloway, Mrs. Greenhalgh, and Mr. Ford. The presentation of the Junior Play, The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners , directed by Mrs. Greenhalgh, was on! of the spectacular events of the year. The climax of the year came with the Junior- Senior Prom, Far-Away Places , under the 'able supervision of Mrs. Satorius. The fall of 1957 found fifty-six seniors entering the halls of P.H.H.S. for the last year. They elected as their officers, Leonard Eddings, President, Edward Dirks, Vice-president, Richard McGary, Secretary, Karen Moss, Treasurerg Student Councilors were Mary Ann Brass, David Quinn, Jim Harris, and Norman Powell. Senior sponsors were Miss Terry, Miss Masters, Mr. Bagby, and Mr. Haddick. The presentation of the Senior Play, Meet Me In St. Louis , and the publication of the Sphinx were two of the successful projects completed by the Senior Class. Sooner than the seniors had thought possible, their last year .at good old P.H.H.S. had come to an end. On May 9 they were guests of the Junior Class at the Prom. May 23 was Baccalaureate with Reverend McCollough delivering the sermon. At last, on May 27, they had reached their goal-graduation. Chosen to lead the club were four senior boys: Carl Moats, President, Bob Lynn, Vice-President, Bruce Ortman, Secretary, and David Quinn, Treasurer. The sponsors were Mrs. Rebbe and Mr. McKee. Several noteworthy achievements may be credited to the club this year. Members of the club purchased megaphones, printed in school colors, for 75c each. Also, the Pep Club sold, for the first time in its history, bus tickets for the away basketball games. Students who bought these tickets and ,attended all the games saved them- sclves 50c. On December 7, the Pep Club gave their first dance, 'The Snow Flake Frolic, in the gaily decorated bandroom. Blue and white streamers suspended through the room created a royal background. By popular vote taken at the door, Mary Ann Brass and Leonard Eddings were chosen Snowflake Queen 'and King. Under the very capable direction of Mrs. Rebbe and Mr. McKee, the Pep Club held pep rallies before almost every game. The cheerleaders, with the help of Mrs. Rebbe, learne.d many new cheers which helped bring school spirit to a new high. We mcct . . . in gladness of heart. A. Lincoln The Commercial Course is one of the most important and practical courses in Pe- tersburg High School. Two years of short hand, two years of typing, and one year of bookkeeping are offered in our high school. One of the obiectives of the department is to prepare students for courses in Ac- countancy and Business Education, which they will pursue in College. Another objective is to prepare students for life in the business world. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on spelling, grammar, and speed and accuracy in skills. One of the opportunities for employment, afforded to seniors through State Civil Service Examinations is the Civil Service Examinations. Mrs. H. P. Satorius of the high school faculty has been appointed as a state monitor. The test consists of three parts. The first is a two-hour test, evaluating the ability of the student in spelling, grammar, mathematics, and office skills. The second part is a test in various typing skills, including work in rough drafts. letters, ard general typing ability. The third part is a test in shorthand, dictation, and transcription rates. If the student passes in each part of the examination, he is called by the State Department for an oral inter- view. This year twenty-seven students took part. Another opportunity for employment offered to seniors is through the Federal Serv- ice Examination. A federal examiner for this district conducted an examination in Petersburg lligh School for twenty-seven Students. P AGE FIFTY-NINE The Library The School Library-A Tool Of Modern Education The things I want to know are in books. -A. Lincoln The time is here when American Education is challenged to put emphasis on Quality Education rather than Quantity Education. For the past hundred years we have struggled to effect the educational ideal set forth by our founding fathers-that .all the children of all the people have the benefit of free schools. We have come a long way-we are a nation of highly literate people. Today as we strive toward the new goal, Quality Education, the library can become 'an educational force as well as the service center of the school. More and more the library has become a place where every student can find help and stimulation for learning. The library staff officers are: President, Karen Mossg Vice-President, JoAnn Hill, Secretary-Treasurer, Patsy Munson, Edith L. Masters, Librarian.
