Poem The Past in Our Hearts, The Future in Our Hands The past in our hearts, the future in our hands, From the blue and white's security to the white's demand We tackled the jobs that came our way, Foot weary and worn at the end of the day. These paths we have followed to cut our 1ife's work, To meet the unexpected needs wherever they lurk. Many were the times these paths have been rough, But this was the price of a stripe on our cuff. Each one a milestone for the new road ahead, When for the blue and white there's pure White ahead. A Qage 91110 Our Crystal Ball Written especially for the imaginations of the class of '60, as only the persons involved could foresee the incidences as they occur. Let's pretend this is the year 1970, and we have opportunity to visit our former classmates. We can begin by touring our beloved PGHwhich holds its many secrets and memories of the past. Upon entering the lobby, we are greeted by Eleanor Mitchell dischar- ing a patient from OB. Eleanor has three of her own now, and has decided to make OB a career in itself. On third floor we see Barbara Folke Bennett. She now has her own electric push-button foot stool which gives her access to eventhe highest shelf in the medicine cabinet. Such progress was never made when we were students. Lois Thacker, B.S., M.A., is vainly trying to keep her students in line on second front. It seems they always disappear when tray-serving time rolls around. Just across town we find Marian Gitchell and Sue Smith supervising proceedings at Central State Hospital. It's amazing how many patients have decided there's a better life since these two appeared on the scene. Dorothy Joyner is very successful as Director of Nursing at the new Southampton Memorial Hospital. She may be slow, but she has no trouble keeping her nurses in the line of duty. Mary Smith has started a nursing school in Haw River, but is having difficulty recruiting students as the name of her town seems to warrant off everything except pigs and alligators. On our tour through Washington, we see Elizabeth Johnson working in her own research lab. Statistics show that there is definitely a white mice shortage since Libby began her new venture. Marie George, we find working on a Pediatric ward in Baltimore. However, it isn't children that interest Marie on her off hours. Joanne Mays is quite an outstanding figure in Hollywood as she is in- volved in industrial nursing for MGM studios. Although we were unable to get an appointment, we hear that JO is doing quite well for herself. Our own Ardella Chumney is now school nurse in Victoria Elementary School where she has one of her two sets of twins enrolled. As we continue our journey, we see Gail Cowan, just emerging from the Twilight Zone. Gail found working among the human race quite un- bearable, as she just couldn't keep out of trouble. A visit to Farnhurst shows Lynda Edwards vainly trying to catch Billy as he roams the grounds of our affiliating school, Delaware State Hospital. Somewhere in our travels we have missed Carrie Croy. Upon inquiry, we find that she has retired after the publication of her latest book, LI'-he. Psychology of the Human Male, which was written in Vienna while there with her political correspondent husband. Our journey has ended,andwe are quite pleased with the products of our imagination. Although some of our conceptions seem alittle unreal- istic, who can say that the future won't hold similar occurences?
