V g , , E Guy Greenawalt Principal Franklin and Marshall College AB I Columbia University AM Pennsylvania Slate College Fd D There always comes a let down after graduation Of course there are happy memories and the precious diploma to carry one along Frlendshlps formed in high school will continue And dreams for the future will occur again to demand the energy and courage necessary for their realization The graduate will suddenly find that he IS on h1s own He now faces the moment of dectslon just what w1ll he do? What is he best fitted for? What further prepa ratlon if any will he need? What w1ll xt cost? How can he get tt? Can he afford the expenditure of time and money that further schooling will require? There IS no ready answer to h1s problem avatlable perhaps It IS some thing that should be thought through very carefully The problem had presented itself before But he had never found either the time or the leisure to attack it with the determination and the enthus1asm that it required There would always be time Somehow it seems rather late when the relentless moment IS upon h1m True the decision is much more difficult than that of selectlng a suit or a pair of new shoes and far more 1mportant The outcome w1ll affect not only the life of the mdlvldual but the welfare of soclety as well A choice must be made It cannot be postponed lndefimtely However a selectxon of career should not be rashly made There IS an element 1nvolved that is far more important than time Welfare and education are 1nseparable At one time in the early history of ship to receive an education Elementary education was offered at publlc expense and the high school was pretty much an academy preparlng for college only Today we have the cosmopolitan h1gh school preparing for l1fe life IH a fuller broader sense In a democracy thls IS the thing Our free mst1tut1ons are dependent upon an enllghtened clttzenry Wfelfare means somethlng more than a mere bread and butter exlstence Welfare presages happlness Maeterlmck has said The Blueblrd of Happiness will not be pursued it follows Therefore welfare goes beyond the pales of selflsh interests Welfare focuses attention upon the poss1b1l1t1es of service service to manklnd What IS the greatest service that an lndlvldual can render his fellowmen ln a free country? Wfhat will be the cost to the lndlvldual in preparation for this servlce? Wfhat w1ll be the sacrifice the pam the suffering? Certainly lf can be no greater than it lS for our boys in Korea than it was for our boys in the South Pacific The young graduate has a cholce to make the decision of a lifetime He must be prepared to act to live This will likely necessltate further study It will have in it the challenge of adventure It will call for 1n1t1at1ve as well as 1ntel llgence It w1ll require a flghting Splflf That IS the privilege of the free man who enloys life in the Unlted States E Guy Greenawalt Principal Page 6 P ' , . .
