For many of you it was your first time away from homeg for others it was your first time to return to school after many years absence. Remember your first lesson? and the heartfailure you felt when a Master walked into your class? How can you forget those fine pieces of art, and the bright faces accompanying those creations? Remember your first bomb ? For me it was also a first time . I must admit I didn't know exactly what I was getting into. But with the truly great support of your Student Council members, and the guidance of the Masters, we managed to finish the year in one piece. This year's success, however, can only be measured by you, the Students, and I thank you most sincerely for your honesty ideas, and co-operation. The social and teaching experiences of the past nine months will never be forgotten. They are experiences which we will build on in our teaching professions and in our lives. Good luck on your First Time - TEACHERS Susan Goldie President of Your Student Council And one member of the Student Body. When the last series of pictures and copy have been put in the shipping envelope, sealed and stamped 'P.T.C. '- and mailed in time to meet our last deadline, your yearbook will be completed. Then we need only your approval to make our efforts a success. 1 Y ' Y Mr. Axford Tom Adams Cathy Seymour Tom Bevan Miss Haythornthwaite Barb Robson Dianne Scrutton Frank Russell Linda Brown Mr. Podrebarac Linda Brock Linda Halligan Carolyn Barnard I an Cuppy Brock MacPherson WE DID IT ........... OUR WAY When you review your days as a student teacher when you are a teacher, you will remember the joys, the upsets, the work, and the fun of this year. We have tried to put these experiences into your yearbookg you must recall the emotions which accompanied them . If we have been able to reconstruct your year at Peterborough Teachers' College - the experiences that you were a part of and those that were a part of you - then our goal has been achieved. Any good thing therefore that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again. This first quote I'm sure has been the motto of the masters of the Peterborough Teachers' College. To the students of Peterborough Teachers' College they have passed on this inspiration to be our motto as building teachers. Not once did they defer. Not once did they neglect. But always during the past, now in the present and on through the future, good things were done by them, and are being done by them, and will be done by them as they treat us as the individuals we are. Patience: kindness: generosity: humility: courtesy: unselfishness: good tempers: guilelessness: sincerity: - these make up the supreme gift, the stature of the perfect man. This second quote describes our masters quite fittingly. Deserving of this praise they are, as they taught us through these traits of theirs, the stature of the perfect man. Through their patience they showed perfect love. Their kindness gave us great pleasure. Their generosity taught us not to be envious. Their humility taught us to forget what good we have done, because they showed us that love hides even from itself, that love waives even self satisfaction. Their courtesy showed us how to love in society, to love in relation to etiquette. They taught us unselfishness by showing us that there is no greatness in material things. Their good tempers and dispositions showed us that love is not easily provoked. Their possession of guilelessness is their great secret of personal influence. If you think for a moment, you'll realize that these masters who influenced us are the people who believed in us. Their sincerity taught us that love is not a thing of enthusiastic emotion, but rather a rich, strong, manly, vigorous expression of the whole individual. . So to all the masters who have worked in these rooms: to all the masters who have encouraged our thoughts and nurtured our ideals: to all their laughter and cheers for our victories: to all their disappointments: to all their defeats: to all the assemblies: to all the lectures, practice teaching, and long hours of homework: to all our panel masters, staff advisors to clubs: to our excellent student-master relationship: to their unique school spirit which has above all taught us self-confidence and human worth: to all this we give our thanks. Through all these headaches and moments of happiness, through all these memories, our masters have survived. They have shown us uniqueness, given us personal values, and shown us their individuality. Now to them we dedicate our yearbook. COLLEAGUES REMEMBER... Having served on the staff of this institution since September first, 1 940, Mr. McKinney retired at the end of October, 1969. His experience in teacher education goes back to 1937 when he was appointed to the staff of Ottawa Model School. There have been a total of seven principals of this college since its founding in 1908 as Peterborough Normal School. Mr. Duncan Walker, the first principal is the only one under whom Mr. McKinney has not served on staff. Mr. McKinney's story is one of a man who has given generously of himself. In his own natural, frank way he has touched the lives of thousands. Most of the graduating class of 1970 knew Mr McKinney only two months. Were you not impressed with the facility with which he established rapport with a new class? He learned your names not merely to streamline class routinesg -- he was interested in every individual as a person. Over the years his ability to inspire and assist has been appreciated by students of every age. As a teacher he has taught children, tyros in the profession, and experienced teachers as well. As a dynamic music teacher, his accomplish- ments range from the training of choirs that thrilled their audiences, to the transformation of countless out-of- tunes into the status of follower for better.l His wise counsel has helped many a student over a rough spot. Active in community programmes, Mr. McKinney has been a scout leader, is a past president of the Peterborough Community Concert Association, and a board member of Kawartha Medical. He has been active in So-Ed and other Y. M, C, A. programmes. Many other contributions to community ventures could be mentioned. But now we want to congratulate Mr. McKinney on having reached this stage in his life having retained so much zest for living. Our very best wishes go with him now that he has time to enjoy his gardening, photography, and especially travel. We hope he thinks of us when he is at OSAKI for EXPO 7O! 11 1? x XY? May your pupils all be different, may you find solutions rather than answers, and may you find happiness not in the absence of problems but rather in the process of overcoming them . W. H, Morris Vice-Principal PRINClPAL'S MESSAGE A few short months ago you came to the College, each of you with what seemed to be a fairly simple desire, - to become a teacher. Most of you have been surprised at how complex such a seemingly simple skill can be. You have grown a great deal during this year, - probably more than any of you realize. You have begun to understand children and how they learn, and have achieved a certain degree of skill in guiding their development. Continue to build on this foundation because no matter what aims for education are stated by society, it is only through the understanding, skill and personal philo- sophy of each teacher in the classroom, that they can be implemented. You will have the opportunity to become a unique and vital part of each child you teach. On behalf of the staff I wish you well in your chosen career. 'cL 4 H. R. Cross Principal 4 The first time you read over this Yearbook you will probably skip anything as formal and dull as a foreword. In later days, in a reminiscent or thoughtful mood, you may turn over these pages again. I hope, at such time, that you will on reading this message re- flect on your responsibilities as a teacher and consider some of the experiences that make teaching worthwhile. In these days of change and reorganization, it may seem to some people that we have totally abandoned our past to seek salvation in anything that is new or different. While there is a tendency for educational institutions to be conservative and we must continually search for viable relationships with life as it exists, we have not, in my opinion, ever sought to abandon our past. It is probably as true today as it was many years ago that the things a teacher lives by are the things of the spirit. In this connection, I would hope that faith is still with us - faith in mankind, faith in the final sovereignty of truth and faith in ourselves. I would hope that optimism is still with us - optimism to brighten a dull day or to enhance monotony. I would hope that good-will is still with us for this makes our relationships with our fellows more pleasant and more positive and helps to turn the wheels of existence more smoothly. Finally, I would hope that success is still with us - the success that springs from the knowledge that we have given of our best and have not been found wanting. I have mentioned but a few of the things of the spirit. You will be able to add others of your own. I hope, as you read this page, that either you look forward to success in teaching or are able to contemplate a success that is already under way. That it has been said so often in no way diminishes the fact that the girls and boys of this Province hold the future - yours and mine - in their hands and your responsibilities as a teacher still demand the best that you can offer as they always have. I wish each of you the best of good fortune in your career. a f William G. Davis 1 4 W PWFWUFW Minister of Education. October 21, 1969. 1-4 '91 4 V 535-HQ 'Q S fk- .' '.,.,.J - ' i P . P. . My eyes, my ears, my mind opened: I saw what life was all about, I saw wrongs and rights, I saw me, you, children -- humanity: Iheard what life was all about qor rather what was said -- I'm sure they were wrongj I heard laughter and tears, I heard birth and I heard dying. My mind accepted all it received-- Sometimes it was shocked, Other times it was numbed, At times it failed to understand. But I continued to grow. Soon I began to see through the misconceptions. Infinity - a word to express a feeling when dictionaries fail A cover - up, an ego - booster, to make us Feel proud to express a thought no one can quarrel with For who can quarrel with infinity ? I cannot - yet I know I can reach out and touch And take to my soul a fragment of infinity For it is youg it is your smile, your brown eyes depthless That tiny cleft in your chin - That give me the power to reach out And your love That gives me the power to grasp. And then we meet And we share infinity For you, too, have marvellously grasped this fragment. We see the sunlight on the snow The heavens aflame at sunset, the blazing glow in your And the deep purple of tender after- love. Tiny homes dotting the valleys Smoke curling lazily from the rooftops A world of our own, from which We see the other world and its people Playing their own little parts, like dolls, Never guessing 1-low pitifully funny they look. Yet in our world, I can be me, you can be you, I awaken, and think wonderingly, he loves me . And Nature, all wise, laughs and nods And I know that although hell may lurk in the day My fragment of infinity is locked within me. You are the key - Ah yes, you give me pain and tears But what is more exquisite Than hurting for one you love, knowing That he hurts, too? A breath-taking, tormenting, beautiful pain, my love. A reason A fulfillment An expectation An inspiration A prayer. You still say You give me nothing? Infinity hands sweep 'round at tremendous speed Never getting back to the same point. These clocks function But oh so slowly - so slowly, Great clocks moving oh so slowly, Ticking off the time with unending, unerring accuracy. Their great hands have barely moved - Barely moved in a trillion years! A great being wound the clocks. He will never have to wind them again, for, They will run until the end of time To infinity! For how long have they been running? And when are they to stop? He who wound them shall decide when they are to stop. He who wound them might not be there anymore.
