Geoffrey Chaucer He seldom spoke; but what he said was clear, and full of sense, so that we lis- tened.” Geoffrey Chaucer We, the Senior class of 1966, wish to express our sincere thanks to one of our favorite teachers, Mrs. Ring, for her pa- tience, loyalty, perseverance, and dedica- tion to our Hilander . In addition to being a yearbook advisor, Mrs. Ring is an understanding teacher and friend whom we Seniors admire and respect. The Senior class takes this opportu- nity to thank Mr. Crowe for the help and guidance he has given to the yearbook staff. Although the Hilander” took muchofhis time and effort, Mr. Crowe never failed to give us the benefit of his skill and we appreciate his help. We owe Mr. Crowe many thanks for making our yearbook possible. and Appreciation “Theirs be the travaille and ours be the glory” Geoffrey Chaucer Mr. Richard and Mrs. Luongo had the near- ly impossible task of guiding the class of 1966 through four years of varied events. They faced the problems of class dues, class rings, the Junior Prom, Senior Ball, and graduation. Our class has benefited greatly from their ad- vice. Now that our years at P. C. S. have come to an end, we extend our sincere thanks for the help and understanding we have received from them. I went to the dining room when it was time to go for lunch. It was noisy until half the year was over - then they made a new rule — there was to be no talking... Rosemary Johnson - 1957 In September, 1962, a group of somewhat noisy freshmen arrived at P.H.S. They came from Peterborough, Greenfield, Dublin, Hancock, Bennington, New Boston, Francestown, and Temple and it was generally agreed by all that this class had the makings of a great one... The sun is round, the sun is bold, and when it lands, it will make a hole... Danny Thibeault - 1957 As freshmen, we regarded the seniors with awe (some of us did; others made them- selves quite at home!) Thoughts of the Freshman Reception scared the wits out of us, but somehow we kept up our brave fronts and survived all of the seniors' stunts. As the year wore on many scholars showed their talents and added their names to the Honor Roster. And, at the year's end, most of us finally paid our class dues... When we went to the library, we saw the new part and the stacks. We went above the stacks and even where Mr. Bertrand wouldn't let anybody go. In the new part, there are little rooms where people can have parties or meetings. There is a kitchen and bathrooms. They have all the Westerns and other books in columns, like the encyclopedia on one or two shelves and Westerns on an- 57 other shelf. They have a children's corner where children get books. They have pictures you can borrow with wooden frames. Beth Reekie - 1957 In 1963, we returned as silly sophomores, according to the song, but the silly didn't stick long—It was time to really settle down and get to work. Julius Caesar was a familiar name that year, and it was Mrs. Soucy's task to try and make sopho- mores enjoy Shakespeare. Some of us lent literary talents to the Torch and others went dramatic for The Boy Who Changed the World. We went to Jenny's house. And rode the horse. And some of the kids rode the big one. And others rode the small one. We saw how they made rubber toys. And we saw the different kinds of animals... Nancy Chamberlain - 1957 Our Junior year was our hardest, but presented no problems which the Hardy Hi- landers of '66 couldn't handle. College boards and essay contests didn't dim anyone's hopes and served to raise a few. Camelot entranced all who came and helped to make the Junior Prom a success. We lost some members of the class, but gained others to fill the gaps--St. Paul's beckoned to some of our members, and our top scholars answered. My name is Damon Lawrence. I was born in the town of Peterborough. Just two months ago, I had my birthday. I was nine years old. I have many pets. Damon Lawrence - 1957 Finally, it was 1965. We were seniors and it was great—being stood up for at as- semblies, working on the senior ball, and giving the freshmen a workout at the Fresh' man Reception. It was a rough year, but one which we'll all remember for a long whi le. One day we went on a field trip to the MacDowell woods. We ate our din- ner in a clearing with trees in the middle. We hunted for fungi... We saw Mr. MacDowell's house. We saw many of the cabins. We got lost. Jenny Williams - 1957 Happiness Is: Happiness Is . . . Ken Abbott with a Beatle haircut. However, it made no difference whether the team was winning or losing, for the players were in there fighting all of the time. In spite of a few bad breaks, including losses in overtime, the team managed an 8 and 4 record, the best in several years. The cli- max of the season came with a five game winning streak and a smashing victory over Conant. 1965 Soccer Scores PHS 0 - St. Anthony 3 PHS 6 - Henniker 0 •PHS 1 - Wilton 2 •PHS 2 - Thayer 1 •PHS 3 - Henniker 0 •PHS 1 - Conant 3 PHS 2 - Wilton 3 PHS 2 - Merrimack 1 PHS 4 - Conant 2 PHS 3 - Thayer 2 •PHS 3 - St. Anthony 1 •PHS 2 - Merrimack 1 PHS - home games Cross-Country ROW 1 L-R R. The PHS Cross Country Team successfully defended their title of Class M Champions this Fall, as well as taking the trophy for their performance at the Kear- sarge Invitational Meet. Led by their captain, Ken Taylor, the team was victorious in dual meets with Monadnock, Lebanon, Towle, Merrimack, and Hills- boro. The team placed sixth in the Monadnock Invita- tional Meet and fifth in the Twin State Valley Meet, scoring against top competitors from New Hampshire and Vermont. However, the PHS Harriers fell to Keene in what Coach Yeo titled A Meet to Remember, then took second place in a triangular meet with Simonds and Tilton-Northfield, falling to their long time rival, Simonds. The team's season concluded with a race to victory at the State Meet in Manchester, where they trounced on competitors from seven other class M schools. This Year’s Cross Country team did an exceptional job as Class M Cross Country Champions. Coach Yeo reminded the team, Heavy is the head that bears the crown! , but he has strong hopes that the team may enter the New Englands in 1966. Girls’ Field Hockey ROW 1 L-R R. Johnson, B. Teams from Wilton, Jaffrey, Milford, and Merrimack also participated in the Monadnock Conference, but were unable to defeat Peter- borough’s strength in slalom and giant slalom. Whipple, Coach Ryan Under the fine coaching of Mr. Ryan the 1965 baseball team compiled an 8-4 record, a great improvement over the 3-9 record of the previous year. During the season, tnere were several games of special significance to the team, two of which were the 2-1 victory over Conant in extra innings and Jim Korpi's no-hitter against Merrimack. The season ended with a return engagement against Conant, the winner go- ing on to the tournament. Conant won 1-0 on a home-run by the opposing pitcher in the last inning. Jim Korpi won the trophy for the most valuable player because of his superb performances against Merrimack and Conant as well as his all around playing. Losing only two seniors, the 1966 team looks forward to a fine season. The 1965 PHS Track and Field Team were rewarded for their weeks of hard training when they brought home the trophy for the Class M-S Track and Field State Championship. In Coach Yeo's words, The boys did a fine job! The team made a sweeping victory, taking 11 gold medals from the total 15 events on the Dartmouth College track. A total of 29 medals were taken before the day was over. The team toppled several competitors in dual meets and went on to place in the Keene Rotary meet and 5th in the Kiwanis meet. Five of the team members qualified for the New England meet against top competitors from sur- rounding states. While the team's facilities are still limited, their coach has high hopes that the 1966 team will return to defend their state title and enter several competitors in the New Englands. Bellingham, Massachusetts GOOD LUCK, SENIORS 145 HOPKINS A Word of Thanks The Hilander is made possible not only through the efforts of staff and advisors but through the generosity of our friends, relatives, and neighbors whose financial support enables us to have a yearbook. Without this support, as all of us know, there would be no book. Foremost among those who have helped are the parents whose names appear on the Parents' Page: the patrons; the class of 1966; and our loyal advertisers. The help of those who give us ads is especially noteworthy since it comes as a generous evidence of faith in us and of loyalty to the interests of our scnool. Photo Credits The Yearbook Staff of 1965-1966 would like to express its appreciation to the fol- lowing: The Monadnock Region Association, Abbott Studio of Keene. New Hampshire, The Peterborough Transcript, The Whitney Photographers, and Phelps Photographer of Hillsboro, New Hampshire who have given it the use of some of their pictures. 146 147 Autographs Autographs Autographs 152
