THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1961 Presents THE WILDCAT ‘ Success in life is a matter not so much of talent of : F ” opportunity as concentration and perseverance. — C.W. Wendte Peter G. Appling High School Macon, Georgia Editor-in-Chief — WILLIAM RANDALL CONTENTS DEDICATION PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY STUDENT BODY CLUBS ACTIVITIES SPORTS FEATURES ADVERTISEMENTS DEDICATION JAMES E. THOMAS We humbly dedicate this our nineteen hundred and sixty-one edition of the ‘‘Wildcat’’ to Mr. James E. Thomas whose qualities of friendship and loyalty have won a place of high respect, deep admiration, and warm affection among both the student body and the faculty. This book cannot express how we feel toward him, but maybe it will help show how much we appreciate the tireless work which he has given to help us prepare this record of days at Appling High School. The Class of ’61 HARRY B. THOMPSON Principal As time marches on the reminders in this ‘year book’’, like Dryden’s Alexander’s Feast, make us fight all our ‘‘battles o’er again’’ and revel in the memory of life at Appling High School. The illustrative records here reproduced will serve as mute evidences, to the next generation, how truly wonderful was the year at Appling, that ended June 2, 1961. Congratulations to the Wildcat staff for compiling this, the 1961 edition of the history of the students of this school. Best wishes to the graduates of 1961 - - you face a new scene which will challenge you, our sincere hope is that you meet these challenges well. se Ma gE 2. wes MRS. A Salute The class of 1961 proudly salutes Joyce Hawthorne and Willis Sheftall for having been successful in passing the Negro College Inter- Collegate Examination. Though they have not spent the past year within the walls of our great Alma Mater, they will remain integral personal- ities of the Class of 1961. Presently, Joyce Hawthorne is a student at Spelman College and Willis Sheftall is matriculating at Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia. The Staff FROM THE EDITOR The days we share at our dear ‘‘Appling High” swiftly come and swiftly go but the fun we have and the friends we make will remain infinitely within our hearts. Each year we sadly watch the many footsteps fading down the hall, the many departing voices that are dear to us. We watch them as they become but silent memories recorded in our dear Alma Mater’s book of the fighting spirit. It is in the true Appling Spirit that we the staff of 1960-61 ‘‘Wildcats’’ present this book to you - - the faculty, administration, students, and alumni of our dear school. It is our deepest wish that it will serve as a media whereby some fragment of fading melody may be recalled and the recaptured moment can live again. William C.
