The ig wheels Fall Student Body President Spring Student Body President WILBUR VLASTOS DON BERGSTEDT Participation in student government, in one oflice or another, is a valuable asset to anyone because it not only develops much needed selffconfidence and poise, but also acquaints the student with the well known task of having to make suggestions and decisions which will be acceptable and satisfactory to the majority of those represented. The ability to do this is an important achievement in the world today and should be practiced by everyone. To those of you who are in office now, and to those who some day will be, make the most of that opportunity while you may, so you won't have regrets, when it is too late, that you did not execute your office to the best of your ability. As for the cabinet of the fall of '46, I shall always be grateful to Grace, Leo, Barbara, Bill, Glenny, Harvey, Angie, Ernie, and Margaret for their excellent support and the fine representative ability they have shown, and especially I am grateful to the student body, who made it possible for me to become president, and to all members of the faculty. Our chief accomplishment during our administration was the amendment to the school constitution providing for the selection of the majorettes. Thanks to all. -Wilbur Vlastos. The spring cabinet of 1947 has had definite objectives in mind throughout its term of office. It has tried to increase interest in student government by encouraging active participation in student body affairs. A school paper has again appeared, and successful school dances have been held. The cabinet took part in the' Regional Council Conferences held in Petaluma and San Rafael. It has been apparent for some time that misunderstanding of the student body constitution and its principles, which provide for the governing of student body affairs, has resulted in lack of student interest. Although several amendments have been made to the constitution, the cabinet feels that this is not enough. It will therefore undertake to revise and bring the constitution up to date and feels sure of the hearty cofoperation of the students in this work. WDOD Bel-gstedtl

T e head our laool r ELLIN TRUEBLOOD DAVID DURST Principal ' Superintendent oi Schools This is called the Atomic Age, since man has now discovered the composition of the atom and the means of releasing the tremendous power locked within it. Ivfan has made from the atom the most destructive force ever known. But if he so desires, he can also turn it into an equally constructive power for the benefit of all mankind. Let us see how this power is obtained. At the center of each atom, of which all matter is composed, is a nucleus. The nucleus is made up of two kinds of particlesf--'protons and neutrons. Around this central core revolve the electrons, just as the planets revolve around the sun. The energy which holds these particles together is the atomic energy. When atoms are smashed or cracked this great force is released. The amount of this power is so great the mind cannot comprehend its possibilities. Do human beings possess the knowledge and moral strength to control the energy they now hold in their hands? Can they make it work for their welfare and happiness, or will it destroy civilization? As students, let it be your definite goal to prepare to meet the requirements of this atomic age, Education and Christianity hold the key which will unlock the door to human benefit and happiness, and will save our civilization. Will you take this key and make the future safe for yourselves and the world? - -David M. Durst, My message to you: The great majority of people think of youth as a time of joy, and so it should be, but all too oliten in the lives of young people the springs of joy and happiness are obviously lackingg sometimes this is unavoidable, due to circumstances. More often the reason lies within youth itself who mistake thrills, excitement, and ceaseless activity for joy. The real sources of joy and happiness lie in congenial friendship, wholesome sports, invigorating health and vitality, consideration for others, and an honest appreciation of one's advantages and privileges. May all these foundation stones be built into your lives so that your joy may be complete and satisfying. . Elliu T,-m.H,,,,Ll4
