PIETALUMA CALIFORNIA DlEDlCATllON This Enterprise of 1947 is dedicated to all classes of Petaluma High School-those of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. May the teenagers who guide you through these pages enable those who have been here before us to see the true spirit of their school captured between these coversg may they help those who are yet to come read with enjoyment and full knowledge of what their school was likeg and may they be fond reminders to the classes of today of the events of the past school year. Ivfan has made from the atom the most destructive force ever known. But if he so desires, he can also turn it into an equally constructive power for the benefit of all mankind. Let us see how this power is obtained. At the center of each atom, of which all matter is composed, is a nucleus. The nucleus is made up of two kinds of particlesf--'protons and neutrons. Around this central core revolve the electrons, just as the planets revolve around the sun. The energy which holds these particles together is the atomic energy. When atoms are smashed or cracked this great force is released. The amount of this power is so great the mind cannot comprehend its possibilities. Do human beings possess the knowledge and moral strength to control the energy they now hold in their hands? Can they make it work for their welfare and happiness, or will it destroy civilization? As students, let it be your definite goal to prepare to meet the requirements of this atomic age, Education and Christianity hold the key which will unlock the door to human benefit and happiness, and will save our civilization. Will you take this key and make the future safe for yourselves and the world? - -David M. Durst, My message to you: The great majority of people think of youth as a time of joy, and so it should be, but all too oliten in the lives of young people the springs of joy and happiness are obviously lackingg sometimes this is unavoidable, due to circumstances. More often the reason lies within youth itself who mistake thrills, excitement, and ceaseless activity for joy. The real sources of joy and happiness lie in congenial friendship, wholesome sports, invigorating health and vitality, consideration for others, and an honest appreciation of one's advantages and privileges. May all these foundation stones be built into your lives so that your joy may be complete and satisfying. . Elliu T,-m.H,,,,Ll4 The ig wheels Fall Student Body President Spring Student Body President WILBUR VLASTOS DON BERGSTEDT Participation in student government, in one oflice or another, is a valuable asset to anyone because it not only develops much needed selffconfidence and poise, but also acquaints the student with the well known task of having to make suggestions and decisions which will be acceptable and satisfactory to the majority of those represented. The ability to do this is an important achievement in the world today and should be practiced by everyone. To those of you who are in office now, and to those who some day will be, make the most of that opportunity while you may, so you won't have regrets, when it is too late, that you did not execute your office to the best of your ability. As for the cabinet of the fall of '46, I shall always be grateful to Grace, Leo, Barbara, Bill, Glenny, Harvey, Angie, Ernie, and Margaret for their excellent support and the fine representative ability they have shown, and especially I am grateful to the student body, who made it possible for me to become president, and to all members of the faculty. Our chief accomplishment during our administration was the amendment to the school constitution providing for the selection of the majorettes. Thanks to all. -Wilbur Vlastos. The spring cabinet of 1947 has had definite objectives in mind throughout its term of office. It has tried to increase interest in student government by encouraging active participation in student body affairs. A school paper has again appeared, and successful school dances have been held. The cabinet took part in the' Regional Council Conferences held in Petaluma and San Rafael. It has been apparent for some time that misunderstanding of the student body constitution and its principles, which provide for the governing of student body affairs, has resulted in lack of student interest. Although several amendments have been made to the constitution, the cabinet feels that this is not enough. It will therefore undertake to revise and bring the constitution up to date and feels sure of the hearty cofoperation of the students in this work. Class song First we were strangers, Then we were friends, Now we have memories to share Of all the fun at Senior Prom And banquet to which no other school can compare We bid farewell, for we are leaving, Soon it's Graduation Day. We will hope to meet together When all our memories seem far away. Though they say we'll forget our school days After Graduation Day! We will not forget the swell times With all our dances and senior play. Too soon classmates will be parted And we'll say goodbye to everything. We'll remember work and ball games And the sighs when class bells ring. When these days are recollection, As then we'll be old and gray, We will reminisce together Long after Graduation Day. xf 8 ?0 S P95 my -Ll N ' : x4'Q. 0,1 2, W 5 Z1 . Cl b mc zifzvi ies We of the fcdl The fundamental purpose of vocational agriculture in our high school is to give training in producing crops, in raising livestock, in marketing the products, and in performing efhciently the numerous jobs which a typical farmer of the community must perform. In addition, it should give training to lit the student to be a leader in his community and to help make farm life a most pleasant and productive life. With these objectives in mind, our federal board of education, together with our state boards, has organized definite courses in vocational agriculture. These courses are set up only after a most careful study ofthe problems involved has been made, and the courses are made to adapt the school instruction to those activities with which the students later will of necessity have to do. The primary objective of thc class room instruction is to form a definite correlation with the boy's home project. This project is the basis ofthe course. It gives the boy an opportunity to apply in a practical way the principles which he learns in the class room. He starts his project on a modest scale in his freshman year and builds on it as his knowledge and ability permits. Wheii he graduates, he has a definite farming enterprise with a background of four years' study in the latest management practices. In addition to his theoretical and practical knowledge of farming, he gets a good training in farm bookkeeping and training for leadership. Through his Future Farmer organization, he learns how to conf duct a meeting and to get up on his feet and talk, The boys learn how to judge livestock and poultry and how to prepare livestock and exhibit them at the fairs. In their agriculture mechanics shop they also learn how to build and repair farm equipment and how to sharpen and take care of their tools. Hafmdt fouiaa, Our M zigsltzinnersw The Trojan football machine started the season off in good style by holding a powerful Berkeley High team to a 7 to 6 score. They then came back strong to decisively defeat San Rafael, john Swett, and Analy. The rest of the season was a series of heartfbreaking defeats. Many of the remaining games saw Petaluma outplaying their opponents but failing to come off the field with the winning score. A typical example of this was the Santa Rosa game, in which Petaluma outfgained their opponent, but lost by a score of 26f7. Despite the mediocre showing on the record book, this team displayed a brand of football that indicates the Trojans are on the way up in the football world. ffCraig Ortlieb. Through their generosity notices of the scheduled games have appeared in the local paper, thus hringing a larger group of supporters to the games. It was these merchants, through the Chamher of Commerce, who instituted the player of the week awards.
