Kneeling: McFarland, R.; Whited, D.; Samuelson, R.; Vincent, T.; Fisher, J.; Smart, A.; Gerber, D.; Stanley, J. Under the leadership of Coach A1 Wheeler, baseball was added to the sports program in the spring of ’58. The inexperienced squad had a losing season. The outlook should be better for ’59 as the boys gained some experience and newcomers are expected to report. 98 Tennis Peru Stare broadened the 1958 spring sports program with the addition of varsity tennis. Northwest Missouri State and Fairbury Junior College were scheduled for match play. Dr. Darrel Wininger, center, Bobcat tennis coach, directed the progress of Harvey Rossmiller, upper left, Verdes Baucke, Dave Longfellow, Jim Boatman, lower right, Tom Higgins, upper right, and Ron Case, lower left. Harvey Rossmiller doubled as student manager and team participant. The 1959 tennis'picture for Peru State is bolstered by the addition of Dick Kunde from Fairbury Jr. College and Marv Bergsten from Red Oak, Iowa. Nebraska College Conference play and participation in the annual NCC tennis tournament will complete the 1959 tennis season at Peru State. 99 Track Front Row: Adams g • D't ColStTPer’ J- He“d c™™ E': Ti,,man' C: Gib“ D' S ™ Back Row: lancis, C, Gibson, H d, J.'; 7’ U B°°k'Valter- J ' Mentire, J„ April 11 April 17 April 25 AlT jy April 14 April 28 Track Meets 63 Peru May 62 1 3 Tarkio 32 1 6 Fairbury 14 1 2 St. Benedict 75 2 3 Peru 601 2 Washburn May 78 Peru 61 20 Creighton Dana May 13 Concordia 762 3 Marysville May 591 3 Peru 81 Peru 55 Tarkio State College Meet at Kearney 103 1 3 Kearney 591 6 Chadron 45 Wayne 241 2 Peru 12 80 Midland 56 Peru 16 N.A.I.A. It was a year of rebuilding the Bobcat line as five veterans were lost by graduation. Nevertheless, the team won all of its games except the Chadron contest and scored a total of 205 points while allowing only 78 points to be scored by all opponents. A severe blow to the line was the loss of Bruce Smith, senior tackle, who was lost for the season with a shoulder injury early in the season. Much credit for the successful season should go to Buddy Bookwalter and Gary Adams, who piled up many points with their brilliant running. Opponents soon learned that they could not concentrate their defense on Bookwalter — for a time high scor- ing back in the nation — because Adams would certainly get loose if they did. '-At Here comes our marching hand! Breaking through to victory over Midland 104 Nebraska Collegiate Conference Champions It was great year for Jack Mclntire's Bobcats, Nebraska Collegiate Conference Champions. The squad had height, speed, and balance — call boys, Smith, Mayo, and Johnson; and speedsters, Roach, Okerlin, and Applegct; also good medium sized boys, Witt, Stessman, and Francis. The Bobcats began their season by winning the Four State Tournament in Falls City- Then they journeyed to the Southeast Regional NAIA Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., where they placed fifth. A victorious conference campaign followed. The Bobcats won fifteen while losing only three, one each to Kearney, Wayne, and Wesleyan. At the end of the season, victories over Midland and Hastings on the home court wrapped up the title. Of total games played, the Bobcats won twenty-four and lost five. The freshman and sophomore Bobcats distinguished themselves by beating the University of Nebraska freshman ream. In post season play-offs to determine who would represent the district in the NAIA Na- tional Tournament in Kansas City, the Bobcats defeated Kearney 82-78, but lost the next night to WesJeyan 76-66. Everyone appreciated the splendid play of the Bobcats, and President Gornon declared a student holiday on March 6 to celebrate the winning of the championship. 105 Mclntire whips the boys in line.
