.-sl., We Learn Customs ofO1'her A very-heavily stressed field at Peru High School is that of language. When a person en- rolls in a language course, whether it be Eng- lish, Latin, or Spanish, he realizes that both his knowledge of grammar and his understanding of people in general will be helped. A student entering Peru High School as a freshman knows that he will have to take at least one subject. This course, English l0l, which is required at PHS, combines one semes- ter of English grammar with a semester of lit- erature. A students first alternative in English comes during his sophomore year. Although some students enroll in English 20l, world literature, and English 202, beginning speech, some stu- dents substitute Iournalism 305 for English 201 and Advanced Speech 303-304 for English 202. While enrolled in world literature, students study l'Silas lvfarnerj' Iu1ius Caesar, and other examples of tiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry. In speech, students get accustomed to making speeches before large groups with- out becorning too nervous or upset. Aqui tiene usted el libro' says Iizzi Bradley as he offers a Spanish vocabulary book to Eugenia Grafft Lands Through Languages ln the junior year, American literature is re- quired by state law, beginning with the earliest type of American literature and working up to modern works by living authors. English 301 and 302 also introduce juniors to some work in advanced grammar. Although most seniors are not required to take English, seniors on the college entrance Course must take English composition during the first semester. Work in this course includes many short themes, a l,000-word autobiogra- phy, and a 3,000-word research paper. English literature is offered the second se- mester ot the senior year. Seniors in this course study the development of literature in England from Chaucer to the present day. Two years of Spanish and Latin are included on the curriculum in the foreign language de- partment. Under the guidance of Miss lna Hor- nish, students learn to speak the languages and the customs of the people who use these lan- guages. This model of the Roman Coliseum in Miss Hornishs roozn shows Roy Feltner and Pauline Garnett an exam- ple of Roman architecture. ' ,F . M, ff' -28 'l2'!9nyu9'H1 -
