L A 3 i Rodeo Acts Are Timely, Weird, and From modern politicians to ancient Azlecs, the 1952 Rodeo, November l3 and l4, directed by Iames Hawker, Hal Kesler, Iames Noble, faculty advisers, and Ruth Young, student di- rector, proved a success by netting 583739, the largest profit ever earned by any PHS Rodeo. The first scene, Wintergreen for President, was a political scene based on the Broadway stage show Of Thee I Sing. ln contrast to the fast tempo of the first act, Weather or Not, was slow and easy as loe Keel, commentator, talked about the weather. The music for this scene evolved around the everlasting topic of the weather. The Bride of Huitzilopochtlif' a story of an ancient Aztec wedding, with students impro- vising their own dancing, portrayed Mike Stru- ble as an Aztec god. When the curtain opened, the audience saw the inside of an Aztec temple, with Mike enthrcned in the middle of the stage, covered from head to foot with gold-leaf make- up. Grand Central Station, a scene represent- ing travelers from all parts of the world meet- ing in Grand Central Station, closed the show. They appeared on the gym floor before the Wabash basketball game, lanuary 30, to show off their outfits for the first time. lohn Ole Olsen invited the band to per' form at the Fort Wayne Coliseum where his show Skating Vanities was playing. ln addition to the scrap drive, a Tag Day, the operetta, and a football game benefit brought the total to 56,000 September l2, the organization opened the football marching season with a Hawaiian show during the halftime of the Logansport game. They again presented this show at the halftime of the Franklin College game, Novem- ber 8. For the fourth consecutive year, the band was invited to Butler University October 18, -37 where they presented a political show, as this was election year. A trumpet trio by Terry Brock, Morris Bufe, and Bobert Miller with band accompaniment, highlighted the instrumental portion of the Christmas Concert, December l7. Included in the program were Horse and Buggy Days, l'Mississippi Suite Overture, and the traditional 'lWhite Christmas. Patricia Overmyer, student director, conducted Dorian Overture at the bands performance on the program of the Spring Concert, April 15, Several vocal soloists and a drum soloist perf formed with the band as they played Vincent Youman's Fantasy Marion was the site of the Four-Way Music Festival at which the band and choir perf formed, May 8. Although Peru doesnt have an orchestra, Ruth Sullivan, Morris Bufe, Sally Seiler, and loyce Gross were chosen to play in the Festival orchestra. Music Was on the Air When the Choir Sang on WIOU The PHS choir expanded their audience this year, for besides their regular concerts they sang on the radio. On April lU and l2 the choir journeyed to Kokomo to sing for one program on station WIOU, and to record a half hour of music for another. A sixty-four page Song of Christmas along with llThe Twelve Days of Christmas, The Night Before Christmas, and others were sung by the choir at the annual Christmas Concert. Another concert April l5 was presented by the Music Department. The choir sang in this Spring Concert which was the first since Iames Noble, director, has been at PHS. The third hour of the Good Friday service at the First Christian Church for the first time was presented by the PHS choir. ln the evening concert at Marion, May 8, the choir joined their voices with those Choirs of Kokomo, Logansport, and Marion to partake in the FourfWay Festival festivities. Since all of them are also members of the regular band the only time they could find to practice as a group was during their lunch hour on Mondays The Dance Band played at the Rodeo and between acts at the lunior Play and Senior Play as they do each year lames Noble music director is leader boss and also plays a saxophone in the band Dance Band Music Club Entertains Itself Letting the punishment fit the crime, Music Club members penalized those who interrupted performances at meetings by requiring them to entertain again. Scenery for the Rodeo, operetta, and decor- ating for the Christmas dance and Iunior-Senior Prom were also projects of the club. The 28 members met each Wednesday eve- ning in the art room to further their knowledge in the arts of oil-painting, clay modeling, water colors, leather Work, chalk, charcoal, and silk- screening. All the basketball, sectional and regional signs, and football posters were made by the club. Officers of the club are Nola Smith, president, Roberta Nash, vice-president, Morris Rufe, sec- retary, and Martha Nash, treasurer. Science Club Has Own Projects Working on an alcohol combustion gun, a range-finder, and a public address system sound like projects for engineers, but they're all in a year's Work for the Science Club. While Terry Middlekauff and Torn Arnold made an alcohol combustion gun, Nathan Reece made a sun reflector for energy, Morris Rufe rebuilt his motorcycle, and Wesley Sut- ton Worked on a range-finder. Rodger Doran found it interesting to do some trick photography of a bullet in flight. Iames Alwine improved his public address system. Also David Allmann worked with different cleaning fluids to remove India ink. The Science Club elected a junior president, Ronald King. Club Activities May Lead To This Industrialists Fix Club Room Making a new room out of an old room was the Industrial Club's project for the year. The club refinished the floors and Louis Goshern sprayed paint on the Walls of a class- room in the department. The room will be used as a club room and lecture room. One member was in charge of refinishing one chair for the meeting room. It was his duty tc have it planed, refinished, and the frames welded. After each chair was finished, the boy in charge of it carved his name on it. As dues were collected at each meeting, and no trips or projects besides the fixing of the club room were undertaken, the members used the dues for a party. Caduceus Has Health Talks To familiarize students with the many occu- pations in the health field which are open to high school graduates, the Caduceus Club sponsored a series of speakers this year. On February 3, Dr. leanne Reybolt, of the Bureau of Child Hygiene at the Indiana State Board of Health, spoke on the different kinds of work in the Indiana State Board of Health. Mrs, H. L. Brunner, professional occupational therapist, showed a movie on occupational therapy on March 27, and a former student, Dr. Robert Hopper, local optometrist, spoke April 9 to the members. The first project of the Caduceus Club was visiting the hospital and seeing the X-ray ma- chine, and afterwards the club had a picnic. Since previous presidents had not conducted initiation ceremonies, no student otticially be- longed to the League before this year. This years group sponsored a February candlelight service. As part ot the ceremony students received a carnation corresponding to their NFL degree. Degrees and memberships are achieved as students enter speech contests and do service speeches. Peru placed second at the Indiana State Teachers College where they were defending the sweepstakes trophy for the third year. Peru also placed second at Hammond at the individual events tourney. Baymond Nix, secretary, was in charge of the social committee for the dance. Refreshments of cokes and potato chips were served throughout the dance in the canteen. At the Thanksgiving Auditorium, November 25, spon- sored by the Boys League, Charles Oberlin ot the Unit- ed Brethren Church was the guest speaker. The PHS choir sang as part of the program. All paid members of the club watched sports films during one homeroom period. ln the last two years the Boys League membership has nearly doubled and more have attended the Sweat- er l-lop than in any previous years. The Hop was at- tended by about lUU couples this year. Girls Have Sixteenth Birthday Since this was the Girls League sixteenth anniver- sary, a birthday theme was used at their annual Kid Party, October 9. Hair-bows, lollipops, and short skirts were all part of the event. Starry-eyes gazing at the Eifel tower, a movie house, and sidewalk cafes were all part of December in Paris, when girls and their dates danced to the music of Dick Mordenti and his orchestra, December 6. Bottles of perfume and after-shaving lotion were given to each couple in memory of the dance. Before the holidays the Girls League sponsored the Christmas Auditorium, December l7, which Bev. I. Mil- ton Bowman, stepfather of Wanda Cfearhart, president, was guest speaker. On April 29, the girls entertained their mothers at the annual Mother-Daughter Tea. Honor Society Initicrtes in Convo The Honor Society initiated before the whole school this year, on March 3. The initiation made the largest Honor Society group ever, with a total of 46 members. George Hunt, prin- cipal of Iunior High, was guest speaker. The first initiation, which received ll seniors, took place in the school apartment, December 3, l952. A new idea for the Honor Society is electing the president out of the senior initiation at the first of the year and electing the remaining officers after the first initiation. Members had their annual picnic in the spring. The officers this year were Wanda Gearhart, president, Pat Trexler, vice-president, and Sue Manmiller, secretary-treasurer. Sponsors are Miss Elizabeth Ridenour, D. H. Boone, and B. L Rufe, Quill and Scroll Doubles Size Twice as many students were initiated this year into Quill and Scroll as were last year. The initiation was a candlelight ceremony, March 31, at the home of Peggy McCormack. Quill and Scroll is a national honorary for students in high school journalism. Howard S. The P Club, made up of lettermen of all sports, sold gold and black pencils with the basketball schedule on them to raise money for motion picture film. Seeing these films helped the team to profit by their own mistakes. Films taken throughout the year were shown to the student body in the high school auditorium March ll. The club's main objectives are to unite lettermen of PHS, establish athletic standards, encourage athletics, and sponsor worthwhile projects throughout the year. The P Club sponsored a dance after the Tipton football game. The annual spring picnic was at Salamonie State Park near Wabash this year. An annual initiation was given for boys who wished to be admitted to the club. To be accepted, they must have a major or minor letter in some sport. GAA Girls Attend Play Day Play Day at Purdue on December a picnic initiation, bowling, and volleyball were activi- ties ot the Girls Athletic Association for l952f53. Ten Peru girls attended the allfday session on the Purdue campus with girls from all over the state. lnitiation, in the form ot a picnic, took place in the Maconaquah Park on October 29. The GAA sold pens, pennants, socks, and postcards for their money-making projects. Pic- tures in the form of postcards ot the ClC toot ball champs were sold by the new members of the club. This year the A and B volleyball teams went to Bochester on February Zl, tor a tournament between Peru, Bochester, Monticello, and Lo gansport. The Peruvian Prints Six Page and Six Column Editions To honor one of the historical events in PHS, The Peruvian staff edited a special six-page pictorial edition of the paper after the Tigers won the Central lndiana Conference football championship. A large picture of the team and individual pictures of members of the team were special features of the paper. The special Valentine and six-page Christ- Big Boss loyce Gross, editor-in-chief of The Peruvian, points out a mistake in the ads to sheepish Shirley Leedy who is business manager. I' A, X44-v' mas issues were printed in red and black ink while the paper had to be turned upside down to read the front page of the April Fool's edition. A six column paper instead of the regular five column with 180 more inches in it was printed in Ianuary. But as the school print shop could not successfully print the six column paper with the present press, The Peruvian re- sumed the regular five column size. loyce Gross, editor-in-chief, was in charge of the senior edition of The Peruvian for 1952- 53. The second semester journalism class edit- ed the underclassman issue of The Peruvian. With the aid of Shirley Leedy, business man- ager, a special l8 inch ad appeared in the December issue of The Peruvian. The staff enlarged a great deal this year with Miss Cynthia Baker, publications adviser, ap- pointing two assistant feature editors and six copyreaders.
