Five new faculty members worked with us this year Mr. Cyril Hall, Mr. Thomas Young, and Mr. Thomas Yeager joined the faculty to make up the teachf ing staff for the industrial department Mr. Paul Prible taught mathematics and science, and Mr. lames Noble was in charge of the music department. Counseling students, scheduling classes, writing admittance passes, and filling out reference material for former students are only a part of the many duties of the two deans, Mr. Noel Davis and Miss Mary Stutesman. NFL Holds Stcrte Tourney Here Peru has now established herself as one of the leading National Forensic League high schools in the state ot lndiana. That she was chosen as the back- ground for the NFL state tournament of V949 shows the advancement made by the local chapter during the past l9'fl years. Some of the departments ot speech are covered by NFL member: include debate, declarnations, oratory, and actual radio broadcasts. Membership is achieved by attending meetings, but a total of 20 points must be gained before the otticial pin and membership certiicate is issued. Peru has always attended a large percentage of the tournaments and con- tests held throughout the state some ot the most outstanding being the Purdue Legislative Assembly Indiana Universitys Individual Events Contest NPL state tournament, and the high soho l sponsored events. When Peruvian staff members returned to school in September, they dis- covered that the publications office had been painted a light green. Though the local thinlyclads failed to win a meet, their performances were good considering the short conditioning period they underwent, Coaching the team for the second straight year was Mr, P. D. Malaska, who had just completed his duties of basketball mentor. Peru runners faced their first opponents in the form of Wabash and Delphi The tri way affair ended with Wabash capturing top hon ors Delphi was second with Peru close behind Elwood next invaded the Bengal lair and car ried away a hard fought 64 54 decision Powerful Rochester crushed the Tigers 80112 to 28V2 and Huntington came from behind to win 6O3f4 to 48112 Both of the last two contests were away from home To climax the season Peru traveled to Burris of Muncie where l71f2 points netted eighth place Peru's traveling squad was composed of Boy Atkinson, Delbert Tolen, Dick Kerschner, Bill Chris, Bob Hoover, Norwin Ingersoll, Bill Leill, Don Noland, Don Puterbaugh, Art Schlemmer, Bob Krauskopf, Eugene Downing, Bob Warner, lerry Holland, Dick Stuber, and lack larrelt. ln addition to running dashes, Chris, Kersch- ner, Noland, and Schlemmer formed a fast half- mile relay team. Baseball . . ln an effort to provide more thorough con- ditioning for its track candidates, Peru intro- duced cross-country into its athletic schedule for the first time. Though the harriers failed to Win any of their meets, they nevertheless put on a reputable performance at several in- vites. Peru's newest member of the coaching staff, Mr. Paul Prible, arranged meets with Logans- port, Rochester, and Plymouth in addition to the CIC and Fort Wayne run-offs. Eight stu- dents made up the first cross-country team. Baseball made its first entrance in Peru High as an organized sport during the '48 season. Coach Gene Wernz and his Bengals defeated Logansport, Monon, Huntington, and Fulton, losing to Logansport, Fulton, and Kokomo.
