A X. xx .,. .... N --,' I. K r 'f. 'E 1 5 1 rf!! KK' ---,., Is. 1 1 VERY 'Year the Narcissus attempts to suggest in its pages one of the traditions that is native to Peru. The circus, that fascinating spot of color in our city, is undeniably Peruvian- hence this bit of local color which may prove interesting to those who love anything distinctly our own. In the early eighties there lived a man named Benjamin E. Wallace. He was then a man in his prime, some forty odd years old and was engaged in the livery business. His hobby was animals, both wild and tame, and in a few years he acquired quite a menagerie. In 1883 a small traveling circus stored some property with him and failing to meet their bills, Mr. Wallace found himself in possession of their equipment, including wagons and also a few more wild animals. He engaged a well-known circus manager, James Anderson, and on April 25, 1884, started on the road with his wagon show, which consisted of seven property wagons and six small cages. In the menagerie were two camels, one elephant, one African lion. and a cage of parrots. They made all the small towns in Indiana, Illinois and Missouri This first season ended with the burning of their menagerie tent, the closing of the show, and the establishment of their winter quarters in what was then known as the old Spoke or Carriage Factory on the south side of West Second street. The next year the circus traveled on the Edwin Forest river boat down the Ohio river, making all the river towns. By this time the circus had grown and was so suc- cessful that they always traveled by rail thereafter. Mr. Wallace had acquired a farm in Butler township, now known as the Old Win- ter Quarters and there wintered his show from the start and later purchased the cen- tral farm now occupied and owned by the American Circus Corporation, and assembled his show in newly constructed barns at the new site. He purchased the Carl Hagenbeck Wild Animal Show and the consolidation of the two was given the title, Carl Hagen- beck-Great Wallace Circus and ranged among the largest traveling shows of that period. In 1913, the year of the great Dayton, Ohio, flood, the winter quarters suffered the effects of the flood and a severe loss of animals. With undaunted spirit Mr. Wallace met this disaster, repaired his losses and when the show left Peru for the season's busi- ness it was better and bigger than in previous years. In July, 1913, Mr. Wallace sold the circus to a syndicate headed by Ed. Ballard, of West Baden. Indiana, who operated the same for several years. After disposing of his circus Mr. Wallace devoted the remaining years of his life to farming and banking and leased the winter-quarters to Messrs. Jerry Mugivan and Bert Bowers, owners, fat that timej of the John Robinson and Howe's Great London circus which were thus brought to Peru. Following the death of Uncle Ben Wallace, the Winter Quarters and farm land surrounding it was sold to the American Circus Corporation, composed 'of Messrs. Bowers, Mugivan and Ballard, who now own and operate the same. In addition to their previous holdings Messrs. Mugivan and Bowers had acquired by purchase the Hagenbeck-Wallace and Sells Floto circus, thus combining most of the larger shows on the road. The American Circus Corporation immediately after acquiring possession of Colonel Wallace's Circus holdings began the work of remodeling the old buildings into modern and commodious quarters. Many of the old buildings were wrecked and gave place to new structures. They have on exhibition the largest number of wild and rare animals ever assembled at any one place or zoo. The Circuses controlled by the American Circus Corporation are the Sells-Floto, Hagenbeck-Wallace, and the John Robinson. These shows were all brought to Peru .successively giving this city the right to term itself the Circus City of Indiana, the United States, and the world.
