Our high school years Are only the beginning Of a journey Each year we’ve grown We’ve progressed Accomplishing a great deal nir: Along this journey We’ve made friends Shared good times We cherish The memories ££nSnP 13 We are-almost there We’re, well on ,.our way dust One, Step Closer Table of Contents “One Step Closer” .............p. 1 Curriculum ....................p. 18 Student Life ..................p. 32 Sports ........................p. 50 People ........................p. 74 Patrons .......................p.162 . - We Practiced Office Procedures Business skills play an important part in everyday life. Whether a business-oriented career or higher education was our goal, the skills we learned in our business classes would help us in the future. Instead of typing with one finger, we typed with all ten (in most cases). Instead of messy and illegible notes, we filled our notebooks with squiggly lines and symbols that made things easier to review and understand. Lillian counts the change as Ray packages the purchase for his customers. Betsy. Terese. Carmen and Maria try to show us where the “W” is on the keyboard. Linda learns how to select a filing operation from the word processor's menu. 20 Lillian demonstrates her typing technique. We Sharpened Our Communication Skills Bernard. Nelson and James enjoy reading a selection from their English books. Aida wonders what it would be like living in the days of King Arthur Even though English class was a requirement, we enjoyed it at times. We eventually realized that it gave us an opportunity to express our creativity, to communicate with each other in a proper manner or even to act out a part in a play during class. Some of us read and discussed works by famous authors such as Shakespeare. Hemingway and Emily Dickenson. Others, who needed more practice in basic communication skills, were enrolled in compensatory, bilingual or ESL Classes. Acting out a dramatic exercise are Hinginio. Vicki and Bonme 21 John asks Chris and Susan what '‘eudaemonia” means We Painted And Made Music No more finger painting or banging on a toy drum. We were now involved with the real thing. Our art and music classes gave us the precious opportunity to express our individuality. Some of us even decided to persue careers in the arts. Just a walk past the PAHS bandroom or a peek inside one of the artrooms showed the popularity of music and art classes. Ligia. Nuno and Darleen are busily sketching the bones of the hand. Alex practices with his trumpet 22 We Made Plans For Our Future Dr Petersen explains to Sonia how to meet college deadlines. For four years our guidance counselors helped us make decisions about which classes to take. More than this, they guided us in resolving personal problems and took the time to listen when no one else would. During our senior year we found ourselves in the guidance office more than ever. We were now asking new questions, seeking more advice and discussing plans for a future that seemed closer than ever before. Donald looks at the offerings of various colleges Mrs Gonzalez gives Julio a computer printout of the offerings of his college choice 23 We Learned To Use Our Hands . . . The home economics classes at PAHS taught us basic survival skills which would help us in the immediate future-soon we’d have to cook for ourselves, even patch our own jeans. The course in Personality and Grooming taught us to take pride in our appearance. Our Family Living Class taught us to take pride in ourselves as members of a larger society. Margie Haywood watches how Margarita DeJesus removes a cooled cake from the pan. Esmerelda demonstrates makeup removal on Ana's face. 24 And To Work With Machines Ray removes a flat tire from its rim. Industrial arts classes provided us with the opportunity to learn how to use machines and tools properly and safely. We were shown the importance of mastering a craft and we began to take pride in the tasks we accomplished using our hands. We were proud, too. when we exhibited our products at the various craft expositions in Middlesex County. Finally, we got to show off some of our prize winning entries in the front hall of our school. Testing a circuit board requires cooperation between Alex and Joe. 25 Nuno and Roy tune a rough idling engine. Mildred sands the rough edges on a shelf. We Spoke Foreign Languages We chose foreign language courses because we were eager to learn about different people and places around the world. During the course of the year’s studies we read stories, refered to maps and watched films and slides. These experiences not only made our language classes more interesting, but also gave us the feeling that we were really visiting” France, Spain, Italy or Germany. Ms. Francica discusses Florence. Italy with Lisa Martinez. Rosa gets instructions from Mr Lake as Donna prepares to start the assignment. 26 Nereida. Johnny. Liz and Melissa try to give Mr. Arenas the Spanish word for ‘•horse . We Faced Inspection Tina checks some recruitment material being studied by Thomas and Gladys. The long and glorious tradition of the United States Navy was alive in our NJROTC classes. In addition to attending classes, all members of the corps had to wear uniforms and stand inspection every Thursday. A more formal, administrative and personnel inspection by senior members from the Department of the Navy took place each spring. Among the best experiences we had were going to boot camp and then actually spending time aboard fully operative naval vessels. Commander Paul shares a joke with a group of smiling cadets. Thomas Ayala. Gladys Pagan. Nellie Valentin. Paul Lewin and Bryan Allen stand inspection for group commander Dorothea Parker. We Solved Math Problems Mathematics courses are an important part of the curriculum at PAHS. The basic mathematical skills we learned will be applied to solve everyday problems and help with business problems in our future. Computer classes were very popular offerings of the math department. We learned to use computers, program them in three computer languages and to use telephone lines for time sharing with larger computer systems. Students in college preparatory programs enrolled in trig., calculus and analytical geometry. These were tough classes, but important and worthwhile in the long run Lynda edits her Fortran program. Clara tries to solve a trig problem. Jumping Jacks - Ready? Begin! Rich sets up a shot during a floor hockey game. Many of us liked gym; some were not too fond of it. In any case, physical education was a part of our daily routine at PAHS. The best part of gym was having a choice of playing many different sports. For one marking period each year health was required. The best part of the phys. ed. curriculum, however, was behind the wheel” driver's ed. Theory and simulation were interesting, but getting out of the building and driving a car was the high point of the year for all of us. Raquel gets into those jumping jacks. Bernie is ready for the snap from Donna as Iggy. Peter, Alex and Romualdo wait for the signals. We Ventured Into An Unseen World We looked forward to our science classes. They gave us the opportunity to do things that we used to get yelled at for doing when we were kids. We cut up worms, played with all sorts of live animals and even mixed colored “mystery” liquids to see what would happen. Science courses also gave us a larger view of life and the world around us. We studied plants, animals and microscopic forms of life. We penetrated the surface of the earth and peered into our atmosphere and beyond. Bernie. Sonia and Francis collect equipment needed for their experiment. Brenda prepares a specimen for the microscope. 30 The bones of the human hand interest Evelyn and Karen. We Learned The Relevance Of Our Past Donald and Henry look at a Reconstruction Era newspaper. Even though American History was a requirement, we enjoyed discovering our past. We learned to appreciate earlier times and realized how important it is to understand how our country developed. American History wasn’t the only offering of the Social Studies Department. Psychology, Economics, and World History were areas we could explore if our schedules permitted. Courses such as these broadened our knowledge of people and places beyond the borders of our own immediate world. Chuck. Maurice and Jeff give an oral report on how the stock market functions. It Was The “Best Of Times” The ZPA was the site of our junior prom on May 13, 1983. We entered the hall with great expectations and some terpidation. Soon, however, we really began to get into the swing of things and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We chose our prom king and queen, danced to an excellent band and talked endlessly with friends and faculty. We began to hope the evening would never end. But all too soon it did. We were saddened, but decided to be positive and look forward to our senior prom. Beth, Michelle. Joanne and Terese take a moment to relax their ''dancing” feet. Gerardo Lopez was elected Prom King and Doris Cruz was chosen Prom Queen. Lisa and Iggy take a turn on the dance floor. 34 The Perth Amboy First Aid Squad truck in the forefront of the parade. Happy 300th Birthday Perth Amboy On a sunny, June afternoon of our junior year, we witnessed a three hour parade commemorating Perth Amboy’s three hundredth birthday. This was just one event in a year long celebration. Government officials, fire departments, citizens and floats from every corner of New Jersey participated. Citizens recreate the golden era of Perth Amboy’s waterfront. Many different groups recreated costumes and weapons from the past. The Student Council float depicts the dress of students at PAHS during the last one hundred years. (First Slovak settlers in perth amboy mao. u SLOVAK R.C. CHURCH OF HOLY TRINITY 1809-1983 The Holy Trinity Church float celebrates the landing of the first Slovak settlers on Amboy’s shores. 35 Twas The Night For Ghosts Goblins On Friday, October 28, 1983 the PAHS gym was visited by a strange assortment of characters. Some were funny, some cute and some very, very scary. The ocassion, of course, was the annual Halloween Dance. It was a memorable, fun-filled night for the large crowd that came out to party. Bonnie. Vickie, Miriam. Sue and Michelle came to the dance dressed as San Francisco street mimes. 36 Agatha tries to put a spell on Kris. ••Doc” Michelle Tucker examines the poor bag lady (Ms. Thompson) who was scared out of her wits by Dan “the evil surgeon” Daley. Bernadette mounts up as the game begins. Give It Your Best Shot . . . From A Donkey This year’s donkey basketball game was a close, hard-fought battle. The score was 12 all at the half. During the second half both seniors and faculty got hot. The lead changed constantly until, with five seconds left to play and the score tied at 34, Mr. Z. Bruks sank a basket which gave the faculty a 36-34 victory. The top scorers for the seniors were Paul Volk, Martin Rivera, Chucky Maldonado and Chris Pfeiffer. Norma brings the ball down the court. Henry gets ready to pass to Paul who is waiting under the hoop. Carmen got the ball, but has to figure a way to stay on her donkey The senior bench reacts to a crucial basket near the end of the game 37 We Hosted Educators From Japan On December 8 and 9 a group of Japanese educators and administrators visited PAHS. Members of NJROTC were the guides and accompanied the visitors to various classes and activities throughout the building. The delegation had the highest praise for our school. When asked about the best part of their visit, our guests said that meeting with individuals and with small groups of students would be what they would remember most. A visitor joins Agatha and Kris during 4th period lunch. Visitors line up to receive a souvenier information kit from Pablo. Bryin and other NJROTC cadets get a lesson in origami. Observing a variety of classes was a major goal of the visit. It’s “Purlie” The senior and and junior classes of Perth Amboy High School presented their version of “Purlie” on March 30 and 31, 1984. The play featured marvelous songs, delightful dancing and the antics of Purlie, a slick, shifty, underhanded “preacher”. A large crowd was on hand for each performance and high praise, with thunderous applause for all were the order of the evening. FRONT: Vickie Wooten, Maritza Oyola, Maria Sottilaro, Joseph Ortiz. The editors, Marianne Cher and Sherri Mattes, guided and developed production for over nine months. The staff sorted pictures, wrote copy, sold ads and experimented with innovative layouts and design. All of this required coordination. Those most responsible for this were Julie Dipalo (Senior Section), Donna Stewart (Sports) and Susan Jones (Ads and Underclass). Andres Rivera The undefeated Sophomore Squad under the direction of Coach C. Grillo Although the Panthers gave an earnest effort, they wound up their season with an 0-9 record. The main reason for the 0-9 campaign was the number and severity of the injuries plaguing the team. According to second year coach D. Murphy, “We had to play a lot of underclassmen who had very little experience.” The brighter spots in the season were to be found in the play of Howard Smith, one of the hardest hitters in the county; the arm of quarterback Peter Jimenez, who threw for over a thousand yards; and Sam Winfield, a junior, who was always a deep threat. Howard and Sam were elected to All Conference Teams and Howard was selected for the First Team, All County. Varsity Co-captains Paul Volk and Maurice Brown 53 A Successful Season Under new head coach Steve Rubin, the Panthers had a winning season. With a record of 8-7-2 the Panthers were lead by All County-All Conference-All State sweeper back Virgilio Jacinto. Virgilio was also the team’s lead scorer with eight goals and two assists. Jacinto was followed in the scoring by Tyrone Neira and Victor Rosario. The highlights of the season included State Tournament play, several overtime victories and a first time ever Panther victory (3-2 in overtime) over Edison. Tyrone Neira intercepts a pass. A Disappointing Season The Girls Varsity Soccer Team was only able to put in a fair season this year. The girls practiced and played hard, but were unable to put together a potent offense. Noteworthy during the season was the experience brought to the team by seniors Donna Bishop, Eleonor Collantes, Maria Fuentes and Millie Rodriguez. Coach K. Olsen was not overly pessimistic and said that next year’s team will “show improvement.” Eleonor wins the race to the ball. Maria works the ball past her blocker. Or SENIORS: Eleonor Collantes. They cheered for football, basketball and even cheered at girl’s sporting events for the first time. In addition, our cheerleaders participated in two state-wide cheering competitions. Although they didn’t take first place. Coach R. Jenkins said he was “satisfied and proud of their performance.’’ Donna. Denise and Theresa flash positive smiles from the sidelines. Hey You 41 . . . Sink It This year’s Panther basketball squad had a winning season and our cheerleaders helped us to enjoy each victory to its fullest. When the going got tough during the games, the cheerleaders got tougher, louder and more persuasive. The crowds loved them and responded by backing the Panthers, win or lose, down to the final buzzer. The Junior Varsity Squad with Coach E. Gonzalez The Varsity Cheerleaders with Coach R. Mazurek and his Panthers took a lot of quality teams down to the wire, even beating some of them. The Panthers basketball team, which managed a 12-12 record for the season, beat St. Joe’s at the buzzer in one of the most exciting and best played games of the season. In that game, Paul Volk, William Grant and Wilfredo Flores pulled the team together for the victory. However, in games against Carteret, Madison Central and East Brunswick the Panthers saw victory elude them at the very last moment. In the Middlesex County Tournament. East Brunswick eliminated the Panthers in a 73-69 first round thriller In the state tournament. Hamilton West defeated the Panthers 63-60. Sad. but true, this was the first time Perth Amboy has been eliminated from tournament play in the opening rounds. SENIORS: Paul Vo . Wiliam Grant. The Girls Varsity Squad with Coach G. Ficarra The Junior Varsity Team with Coach Z. Bruks The girls varsity basketball season was disappointing in some areas, but not in spirit and hustle. This squad was vastly improved over last year’s team thanks to returning seniors Crystal Mitchell, Millie Rodriguez and Joanne Kusulas. Coach Ficarra was basically pleased with the effort and defensive prowess of his team. He felt that it would have been a totally different season had the girls been on the winning end of several well played, close games. SENIORS: (Front) Lynda Maldonado. Mildred Rodriguez. Demitroulis had great praise for his squads and said that with a few more breaks they could have had much better records. Important contributions were made to the boy’s team by David Kober, Bruce Kahn, Robert Langan, Pablo Olivares and Tony Balewitz. The girl’s squad was sparked by the mature skills of Sue Lopazanski, Chris Pfeiffer and Lisa Scott. SENIORS: Christine Pfeifler, Susan Lopazanski, Lisa Scott The Boys Bowling Squad with Coach G. They finished with a 6-6 record, the best in eleven years. The team placed ninth in Middlesex County and a respectable eleventh in Group IV events. Coach A. Marhon had great praise for her winning team. She said that this was a team of “solid learners, workers, and winners.” The girl’s squad also did a good job this year. Coach A. Curry felt that his team did the best they could during a difficult season. H AMBOY BOARD OF EDUCATION Frankie climbs aboard as the bus takes off for a meet. The Boys Cross Country Team under the direction of Coach A. Marhon 63 Here’s The Beef There were great hopes for this year’s Panther matmen, but the season did not turn out exactly as Coach P. Lebedz had hoped. Senior Henry Hernandez did very well, but the rest of the squad met up with some stiff competition and had a rough time. A large part of this year’s squad was made up of underclassmen. They were inexperienced, but Coach Lebedz felt they showed great promise for the future. The Panther Wrestling Team with Coach P. Lebedz The Winter Track Team with Coach A Curry Round The Second Floor We Go The winter track squad finished the season with an 8-5 record. Outstanding performances were turned in by Bernard Jack and Ralph Richardson. Jack was county champ in the high jump and Richardson was fifth in the 400 meter event. Coach A. Curry was very gratified by the performance and effort of the entire team. He said that each runner contributed something to the team’s victories, and that the younger participants learned many skills and much about strategy and attitude from the senior members of the team. This year's Panther baseball squad got off to a rocky start. However, this group is known for its hard work and extra effort and Coach D. Hrehowsik was looking forward to a respectable season. The key to turning this around, said Coach Hrehowsik, is better defense. Solid defense, the strong arm of Sal Sepulveda and the booming bats of Israel Gual and Rico Escobar could just do the job. Reggie takes it low for ball four. The Varsity Baseball Candidates with Coach D. Hrehowsik and Assistant Coach K. Hand 67 The Count Is Three And Two “Very promising.” are the words Coach A. Massopust used to describe the coming softball season. The girls are very excited about the team’s chances, he continued, and they are eager to prove themselves. It is a young team. Joann Kusulas and Mildred Rodriguez being the only seniors. but a very dedicated one. Another bright spot in the PAHS softball program is the large JV squad. Curry, feels that his seniors are the mainstay of the squad. He notes that Frankie Morales, Bernard Jack and Pete Jimenez are at their peak. He also envisioned good seasons for Maurice Brown, Dorsey Lewis, Hinginio Muniz and Winston Williams. Tabatha Richardson, Lori Luck and Crystal Mitchell are Coach Marhon’s seniors. These three girls are expected to provide the guidance and leadership needed for a successful season. Leslie warms up for the shot put. SENIORS: Tabatha Richardson. Lori Luck. This was how we felt on orientation day and during our first few weeks here at Amboy High. Soon, however, we adjusted to our new routine. We started to make friends, began to discover many new things in our classes and even began to enjoy high school. By the end of the year, we were already looking forward to our second year. Carlos. Luis and the other freshmen pay close attention during the orientation session. Mr. Arenas takes homeroom attendance on the first morning of classes. Mr. Ortiz shows Denise how the lockers work at Amboy High. 88 Fernando. Ramon. John and David leave homeroom to find their first period class. SOPHOMORES Jose and Lizette check the bulletin board in typing class. The sophomore contingent in gym. waiting for attendance to be taken. Jeff and Elizabeth run their program on the computer as their classmates watch and learn. Sophomores always seem to be caught in the middle. We are no longer lowly freshman, but we are not yet upperclassmen. As the year progressed, we forgot this problem and turned our attention to new and harder classes. We made new friends and looked forward to life as upperclassmen. Troy, Michelle and Jena compare notes for a dissection project. 89 JUNIORS Mary gets help on college admission from Dr. R. Peterson. Axel and John discuss their History worksheets before handing them in. Margie and Lourdes check out the latest fall fashions. Michelle. Chris and Sue in their Halloween costumes. 90 Tabatha. Cynetha and Melissa work on a literature project in English class. Ice clowns around during a pep rally. We were finally upperclassmen! There was a new excitement to our lives at PAHS. Now, advanced classes, closer ties to tradition, more freedom and a whole new social scene were open to us. Along with these pleasures, greater responsibility came to us. We started thinking about careers, colleges and graduation requirements. But, it was with great anticipation that we looked forward to our senior year. Axel and Ed put finishing touches on their Chemistry experiment. Chris runs his new program. 91 SENIORS Angela Acosta Bryin Allen Alex Adkins Myrna Aldea Zoraida Acevedo Darlene Albarran Darlene Allen 93 Members of the Class of '84 find a lot to smile about as graduation day approaches. Madrigal S ngers Jun Yi 776 May Avenue Margaret Znaczko 321 Kirkland Place 173 When we first walked through the doors of Amboy High four years ago, it seemed like our years here would last forever. But time has slipped away, the years have come and gone, and we are now on our own. We, the Class of 1984, are now “one step closer.” Through the years, we have made many friends and within this book are just a few of the many memories we shared with them. These memories can never be replaced and they will never be forgotten. One day we will look through these pages again and relive the times we spent together - the times that prepared us for our future. We wish you all success and happiness in the years to come.
