Who could ever forget the first day of classes? We entered PAHS to become members of this dynamic student body. We turned our attention towards choosing an educational program to meet our individual needs, goals and interests. Did we want to go to college, seek success in the world of work or strive for a career in the technical fields? We searched through the curriculum offered to us. We looked to guidance counselors and teachers for advice on which courses we should take. We wondered why anyone would take classes like Advanced Placement English IV or History II, Calculus, Physics or Economics. We would soon discover how these and other subject offerings would play an important part in our career goals. Yes, we were embarking on the next step in our lives, a step in which a major role would be played by the Amboy High . . . B .X CURRICULUM We Typed, Took Dictation . . We had a wide variety of classes to choose from in preparation for the world of business. We took dictation, typed and kept books. We operated the latest, most modern business machines. On the theoretical side, we studied buying, selling, consumerism and business management. . Those of us who chose to work while still in school joined one of the many work related programs at PAHS. Communicated With Each Gther Em, Kevin and Demitrius doing their own thing. We had to take English every year, and at times it seemed more than we could handle. We soon learned that English would be helpful in our lives and could even be pleasurable. English classes sharpened our communication skills. We would use these skills to express the thoughts and emotions within ourselves. English even became fun when we got involved in drama, creative writing and other media. Those of us who needed more specialized help in English found it in bilingual and ESL classes. We Expressed Ourselves Through Music And Art We wanted to tell the world we were here. We yearned for a way to make our presence felt. We wanted to express ourselves as individuals. The popularity of art and music classes reflected this desire. Art classes offered us the opportunity to express ourselves using various media and to explore the possibility of chosing art as a profession. Our musical talents were tested by performing with the mixed chorus, band and orchestra. Iggy takes his music very seriously. Wm. al . .... We spent much time trying to get into or out of certain classes. Our guidance counselors were not always able to do what we wanted, but they tried to help us with our schedules, with our personal problems and, assisted by the Career Resource Center, with our college and career choices. Our experiences in guidance taught us an important lesson about life. Since our schedules, college profiles and report cards were all computerized , we soon learned that most of the things that went wrong were the computer's fault! ln'- ' i sir-1 2 4 m.i512tg5Qagtfgf4,,,tg352z:g,f W nuns V5 , r ' g ,V -I, A A ' .z 4 I' 'rl A .1 fs- Tm Rolando, Candy and George prepare to beat down Mr. Manascalcds door to get an interview. 0 We Took Pride In Ourselves, We Cooked . . ' The classes offered in home economics helped prepare us for the future. Some of us will use these skills in a career, others will find them invaluable in the home. Gourmet Cooking, for example, enabled us to expand our basic knowledge of food preparation. Advanced Clothing taught us the basics of clothing design and construction. The classes in Family Living and in Personality and Grooming taught us how to take pride in our appearance and in ,fm Miguelina smiles, thinking, crochet 43, turn, single crochet . . 24 Brian waits for Noel and Nilsa to cook him up a Hamburger Amboy High Style. Tinkered, Fixed Cars The various Industrial Arts classes enables us to use machines and tools which were never available to us before. Besides understanding how to use the equipment, we learned the importance of proper shop safety measures and gained respect for the tools of our trade. The high point of the year was our chance to exhibit our our products at the various craft expositions in Middlesex County. We were very proud when we displayed some of the best examples of our work in the front hall for the rest of our students and faculty to see. Larry shows his floor plan to Ralph, John, Marlene and Doug. Chico, Fred and Miguel balance a tire electronically. We Became Fluent In nother Language We were as interested in foreign languages as we were in our own. Language classes helped us to learn about people and places in other parts of the world. Some of us took a foreign language because we needed it to get into college. But others enrolled just for the opportunity to hear another language spoken, to watch slides and films about another country and to learn about lifestyles of other people. S K 10 Print We Became Computer Literate! Z0 Go To 10 Computers became more popular than designer jeans during our years at PAHS. The math department reflected this by offering a computer class every period of the day. Meanwhile, in more traditional classes, we learned basic math skills, worked with calculators and learned about the application of math to business and to everyday life. Those of us preparing for college signed up for trig., analytic geometry and calculus. Scoring high in Math is the goal of Sharon, Kevin, Roberto and Evette. Maria and Bernadette loosen up by jogging. We Got Physical Gym was a part of our lives, every day, for four years. Some of us loved it, others just tolerated it. The running, jumping, exercising and ball playing were supposed to provide us with healthy bodies to go with our sound minds. Along with gym we had to take health. But none of us could wait until we could take behind the wheel driver's education. No matter how we felt about physical education, we all agreed that at least, in gym, like lunch, there was no homework. Members of the gym class await a a rebound as Dawn takes a foul shot. Waiting for the teacher to take attendance. s l l F V , P We Explored Unseen Worlds . . Science classes offered us a look at the world in which we live. We got involved in interesting experiments in earth and life sciences. Those of us going to college took traditional lab sciences to satisfy entrance requirements. Whether we took science willingly or because we had to, we always wound up seeing or doing something out of the ordinary. We looked inside cells, inside animals, under the earth and into the heavens. We learned that it wasn't such a small world after all. . . SN pl Roberto assists Mrs. Arnone in the dissection of an intestine. l 30 4. Carlos proudly poses with his prom date. Those of us interested in individual behavior signed up for Psychology. If we were more interested in group dynamics we took Sociology. And, since the economy was so important during our school years, many of us took Economics to get a better understanding of how our economic system works. ,sgiefigsfggggs ev- 'FF' 'N-v., X ,M V In V . During our sophomore year, we began to explore the offerings of PAHS. We knew the classroom routine after stumbling over the pitfalls of fresh- man year. We had acquired an itch to explore. Creativity was calling us. Some of us involved ourselves in the performing arts. We developed our dramatic ability by participation in variety shows, extravaganzas or the class plays: Godspell, The Me Nobody Knows or Ain't MisBehavin'. Others had a love for drawing or a desire to create with their hands. If writing was your forte, you could have expressed yourself in the school newspa- per or in Equinox the student creative publication of prose and poetry. If music turned you on, you could join the band, participating in performances for football games and freezing by marching in the Christmas Pa- rade. An interest in leadership and government result- ed in many of us serving on the councils of the respective classes in the building. And, don't forget sports! How about skiing down a mountain or hitting a long one out of the ball park? Yes, activities and organizations were plentiful. They allowed us to expand our personalities and develop new friendships. We sang along to the Boogie Woo- gie Bugle Boy, What I Did For Love and Surnrnertirne. We watched talented dancers as they per- formed to music from West Side Sto- ry and The Wiz. With a lot of hootin' and howlin' Dottie sang I'm an Old Cowhand while her female cowhands danced and sang to A Chicken and a Peck. The students, dressed in authentic Western gear, rode the mechanical bull, got arrested for breakin' the law west of the Pecos and even got to dunk a teacher. Whether we were playing football, basketball or baseball you could find each of us, male and female, on a court some- where exercising our bodies and our minds. The PAHS sports curriculum was immense. Whether it was the big three-football, basketball or baseball-or individual sports like track, tennis, wrestling or bowling, you could find yourself on any court contributing to a team. Teamwork-just another extension of how we, as individuals, could work together as a unit. ' Saturdays found us involved in intramurals, vol- leyball, floor hockey or basketball. We were always ready to play, at any time, anywhere or any day of the week. We learned and developed good sportsmanship which we exhibited both on and off the field. Yes, during our junior year we began to develop and mature. Dedicated To Walter P. Staniszewski Teacher - Coach Athletic Director Humanitarian Gentleman Friend With profound admiration we, the Class of 1983, dedicate our yearbook to the memory of Mr. Walter F. Stanizewski. Because of his commitment to athletics and the love of sports he communicated to us both on and off the field, we have respectfully placed this dedication to Mr. Stan here, within the sports section of our book. All of us at Amboy High who had some contact with Mr. Stan will never forget him. He had a unique way of impress- ing and befriending those he taught, coached and worked with. His love of Perth Amboy, his devotion to its sports programs and his pride in his kids became a county-wide legend in the 34 years he spent with us. As a teacher, Mr. Stan showed us that knowledge was the key to our future. He was a man whose respect for learning and youth made us see the value of education. As a coach, Mr. Stan instilled pride and self-confidence in the shakiest of athletes. He made us seek victory, but he also showed us the importance of participation and sportsman- ship. Mr. Stan always boasted about the conduct of PAHS athletes and fans. As an athletic director, Mr. Stan was always improving the sports program, equipment and facilities for us. In re- cent years of diminishing resources, he fought endless bat- tles to create and insure the best possible opportunities for his kids. Many of those involved in Middlesex County athletics looked on with awe and respect at what Mr. Stan was able to accomplish. We, in Perth Amboy, loved him for it. The love we feel for Mr. Stan really reflects best those things which he tried to and indeed did accomplish with and for us. Although our dear friend is no longer with us, his spirit will never leave Amboy High or the minds and hearts of those who knew him. Thanksgiving Thriller I'm so proud of these guys, said first year coach R. Murphy as his 2-6 Panther football team defeated crosstown rival Carteret 15-6 on Thanksgiving. Coming into the game, the Panthers had two victories, their first two games of the sea- son-defeating Sayreville Q21-161 and Cedar Ridge 13-OJ-and six defeats including a heart- breaker to Woodbridge C8-Sl. On Turkey Day, the Panthers scored one of their pair of first half touchdowns when sen- ior halfback George Grooms crashed in from five yards out for the score following Tony Morales' recovery of a Carteret fumble. When quarterback Pete Jimenez passed to fullback Dave Cross for a two point conversion, the Panthers had an 8-0 lead. Mazurek felt that Senior Mark Koprowski played very well, averaging 17 points per game. Junior Paul Volk also had several good games and showed some promise for the future. The junior varsity ended the season on a happier note. They compiled a 15-8 record. The hustle of jose Santiago and Pat Wilson accounted for some of the team's success, but the real sparkplug of the team, according to Coach I. Otlowski, was Israel Gual. They say that if things are not going well, you look to the future. In the case of Panther basketball, this is the real truth. This year's Freshmen had a tremendous year. Receiving praise from Coach I. Ferriter, as well a most opposition coaches, the squad compiled a perfect 24-O record and won the St. Peter's Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament. As seniors, then, we were eager to graduate and face the reality of the world. We spent our senior year deciding what we were going to do with our lives. We spent many hours in guidance discussing our future plans with our counselors. Did we have enough credits to graduate with our class in June? Did we plan to go to college, business schools, technical schools, military service or join the work force? We sought advice from teachers with whom we had grown c1ose,during our high school days. They gave us hints as to what we could expect to face in the outside world or in college. Our friendships with peers also played an important part in each of our lives. We conversed about our tomorrows, enjoyed going out to the movies or shared special moments together for the last time on our class trip and at our senior prom. At graduation each one of us realized we were beginning a new chapter in our lives-we each had a dream we wanted to fulfill. You hated to see people frown. You'd try to make them laugh. I Mario Ferro 1964-1982 And so I write to you this rhyme, on everyone's behalf. We loved you Mario, although sometimes we didn't show it. And even though you're far away, we still want you to know it. I know you'll see this letter, and I know you'll hear my cry. I wish you could come back to us, and say it was a lie. I wish that I could see your face, as once I did before. in Chemistry I wish I could walk up to you, as you come through the door. If only we could turn back time, the past I'd like to change. There's so much more I'd like to and words I'd rearrange. Unfortunately our time is up. There's nothing more to do. We'll keep your memory alive, and always think of you. Never let the present shade the past or prevent a clear vision of the future. The road to tomorrow lies open. Reflect what you dream into reality. Together we, the Class of 1983, can go as far as our minds can see. :nmol 'vm xuxamx David M. Hudanish Editor
