CONTENTS The search for friends, happiness and a good education characterized our years at PAHS. That search is reflected and in- troduced here. Portraits and candid shots depict those individuals, the Class of 1982, who were in- volved in that search. PAHS juniors, sophomores and freshmen were involved in this continuous cycle of searching. Here are the people whose efforts and caring guided our search. Our search took us through many activities, organizations and numerous good times. Involvement in sports reflects our search for excellence and good sportsmanship. At the end of our senior year, with the help of those who supported us, our search turned towards whatever the future held for us. 2 II There are many individuals who deserve recogni- tion for helping the Class of 1982 search for success, happiness and a better future. There is one in- dividual, however, whom we would like to single out and acknowledge — Mrs. Ruth Peterson. Mrs. Peterson was always an understanding and caring person. She was always there when help was needed. She was a very special teacher and good friend to us all. We would like to show our appreciation to Mrs. Peterson by dedicating our 1982 yearbook to her. 3 We lived our days searching for those special moments — 5 filled with happiness, 6 7 8 10 facing new responsibilities, 11 K1 (.IKS MU Vlmrv r HuMim jad V ' ' SUNDAY.UU. 1 . tn 2 FAIR Conege Cfnw au MlMW Count • i KMD NOW V . onivcrsitiis • COLLEGES . We, as these juniors, started visiting our guidance counselors for help and advice concerning our plans for the future. We began checking job opportunities and preparing ourselves for taking PSAT and SAT exams. The Junior Council under the direc- tion of President Daisy Santiago helped us to raise money through various fund-raising projects. The highlight of the year was our junior prom held at the ZPA. This was the first year that the junior prom was held outside of the PAHS gymnasium. It indeed was an enjoyable, successful evening. As the year came to a close, we could hardly believe that it was already time to face our final year, our senior year at PAHS. Lillian, Migdalia and Nelya knitting in home economics. The sophomores pictured here have, as happened to us, become accepted members of the PAHS community. Our class became organized under the leadership of our Sophomore Council. We sponsored candy sales, record sales and many other projects. It turned out to be a busy but an enjoyable year. By the end of the year, we were anxiously awaiting our next year, when we would finally become “upperclassmen.” Larry Haywood looks for help in the worst way. We came from different middle schools, and many of us discovered that we would have to make new friends. We spent most of the year becoming familiar with the school, the crowded hallways, the faculty and those dreaded marking period exams. By the end of the year, we were anticipating the excitement of sophomore year. Miss Markiw backs her freshmen Kathy Massopust and Lisa Martinez. 78 Adalbert© smiles as only a freshman can. The Junior Prom May 29,1981 It was our turn to transform ourselves into elegant ladies and gentlemen — all decked out for an evening filled with “Moments to Remember.” Our prom was special. It was the first year the junior prom was held outside of the gymnasium — and at the ZPA Hall. We laughed, danced and talked together as we im- mersed ourselves in one of the most memorable ex- periences of our junior year. 105 Janice and Billy finding a moment alone at their table. Halloween Dance Halloween is the night for witches, ghosts, vampires, monsters and ghastly ghoulies. The annual Student Council sponsored Halloween Dance was no exception. This year’s scarey adventure was held on Friday, October 30, 1981 and was well attended. Who or what attended is another story. It is obvious from these pictures that our Amboy High students put much effort in- to making this a nightmarish, but memorable evening. Punk-ee T.C. THE FACULTY Donkey Basketball The roaring crowd backed the seniors, but the faculty squad eked out an exciting overtime victory of 22-20. This year’s donkey basketball game proved to be a thriller all the way. The two teams were never more than four points apart. The seniors tied the score with less than a minute on the clock, but the faculty scored first in sudden death overtime. 107 He’s up!... He’s down! Mr. Sellers challenges the mechanical bull. Marlene and Randi show off their down on the farm outfits. Swing your partner, promenade to the right. You don’t have to be a long, tall Texan to wear a cowboy hat. A Mexican hayride, Perth Amboy style. It’s A Hoedown! C’mon ’n clap your hands 'n stomp yer feet! It’s the first annual P.T.O. City Slickers Barn Dance. The event was held in the PAHS gym on November 21, 1981. The large, costumed crowd tried their hand at riding the mechanical bull, taking an outdoor hayride, and at real square dancing. In between all these activities, the students, faculty and parents showed off their western outfits, munched country cookin’ and tried to keep from getting arrested by the local sheriff and his deputies. These folks got arrested, but had a great time anyway. 108 The toys that came to life. A Christmas Wish Come True On Saturday, December 1, 1981, “A Christmas Wish Come True” — an original play by seniors Tara Mervine and Cindy Urbanski — was presented to elementary grade students. In the play, a group of children with mean parents received no Christmas gifts. The kids wrote to San- ta and got a bag of magic dust and beautiful toys (played by PAHS students) from him. The play showcases sixteen young people who share their life stories with the audience through dialogue, song and dance. The story grows more in- teresting as we learn that each person’s life, though fraught with hard times and troubles, has some ex- cellent uplifting qualities. This year’s play was particularly well done. On March 17,1982, the cast of “The Me Nobody Knows” was awarded a Best Show Certificate at Middlesex County College during the Achievement Showcase for High Schools in Middlesex County. Mr. Jenkins choreographs “This World”. GOT THE SPIRIT! 127 Football . The Panthers ended their season by toppl- ing Carteret in the annual Thanksgiving game. Fullback David Cross crashed in from two yards out and senior flanker Moe Bryan raced in with a two point conversion giving the Panthers an exciting 8-7 triumph. During the season the combination of sophomore quarterback Peter Jimenez to senior split end Moe Bryan provided most of the Panther fire power on offense. Credit also goes to flanker Steve Petrosino, fullback Tom Wright and fullback David Cross. Coach Davis was pleased with the efforts of his Panthers. He was particularly happy with the Thanksgiving victory. “This was really a great way to end the season. The kids worked very hard and really deserved to close out the season with this win,” said Coach Glen Davis. PANTHERS TACKLE OPPONENTS The offense sets for the snap. Paul Almeidinha sets up for a kick. The boys varsity soccer squad enjoyed a successful season. Sparked by the play of ex- perienced seniors, the squad rolled to a win- ning season and impressive post season tour- nament play. Coach Michael George was very proud of his players and felt that they did much to in- crease respect for PAHS in Middlesex Coun- ty sports. He felt that the victories were a team effort, but also indicated that the play of individuals such as John DosSantos helped to inspire the squad. SENIORS: Aderito Campos, John DosSantos, Carlos Jacinto, Chris Bolanos (Sr. Trainer), Steve , Hantiztefhanis, John Viegas, Luis Inoa, Demitrious Koudis. 130 JUNIOR VARSITY Under the direction of Miss Kathy Olsen, the PAHS Girls Soccer team won its first victory since the team was formed in 1979. After two years of building a team, learning the plays and developing team spirit, the girls were exuberant about their four goal victory over Spotswood. Providing the team with strength are Seniors Frances Ruiz, Marlene Church, Liz DelValle, Mary Ann Lambertucci, Marie Rivera, Stacey Sulikowski, all of whom are pictured at the left, and Mama Kerchner. The entire team, with the ex- ception of senior first singles Janice Balon, had never before been involved in team play. The girls worked on learning the game, improving their skills, and developing team sportsmanship throughout the season. They experienced both winning moments as well as disappointing defeat on the court. Coach Sottilaro feels that their progress this season is an indication of how well the new ten- nis program will succeed at PAHS. Jackie Rodriguez listens to track strategy from Coach Curry. BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM SENIORS: John Hernandez, Dave Gehrum, Darrell Council, John Lewis. The PAHS cross country teams enjoyed many moments of personal victory and team success. Boy’s coach Alice Wageman felt that this was one of the most successful teams ever. She felt that all the runners’ times were im- proving, but credited much of the teams success to the ability and speed of Frankie Morales, Danny Rivera, Dar- rell Council and Milton Santiago. Girl’s coach Andrew Curry indicated that his young, basically underclass, team used this season to really pull itself together. They are working toward a possible super season next year. The girls who will be returning have benefited much from the leadership and guidance of seniors Jackie Rodriguez (team captain) and Nilza Zavala. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM 133 A WARDS ... A RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE Everyone at PAHS appreciates the efforts of our athletes. It is always gratifying, however, when our sports stars receive public recognition. This year Eric “Moe” Bryan was elected to The News Tribune’s All-Middlesex County first team in football. Coach Glen Davis, above, presents the award to Moe. The Panther soccer team had a good year. John Dos San- tos provided the spark for much of the team’s excellent play. In recognition of his contribution, Coach Michael George, top right, presents the MCAC All-Conference Award to John. T. C. Nierny received many accolades for track. Coach Andy Curry, right, presents T.C. with her MCAC Award for cross country. The wrestling squad came in third this year in the Union County Catholic Tournament. Accepting the trophy, below, are captain Hector Valentin and Coach Paul Lebedz. 134 EDICATION ... GEORGE R. ZUPKO GYMNASIUM________________ 135 A Ww Thanking those assembled. With great pride Mr. and Mrs. Zupko pose next to the plaque. Mr. George R. Zupko has always loved, coached and sup- ported school sports. His hallmark has been his boundless pride in student athletic achievement. In recognition of this, the PAHS Student Council an- nounced, during half time on December 11, 1981, that our gym was now officially known as the George R. Zupko Gymnasium. Ana Marengo (’81) made the dedication speech as Carmen Cruz, student council president, un- veiled the plaque. Mr. Zupko then expressed his gratitude for this honor. Mr. Zupko shows his appreciation. ASKETBALL ... THE AGONY OF DEFEAT After three periods the Panthers led the Red Devils of Hunterdon Central 47-43. We were well on our way to another Central Jersey Group IV vic- tory. The victory, just like a brilliant season, eluded the Panthers’ grasp. Although they trounced Matawan 67-47 two days earlier, the Panthers fell to Hunterdon Central 71-68. They com- piled a respectable 15-7 regular season record, but met with many disappoint- ments along the way. The season’s bright spots were pro- vided by brilliant individual efforts. Moe Bryan, elected to the MCAC se- cond team, and Dale Swindell, elected to the MCAC third team, were the leading scorers. David Clark, Fred Faniel and Harvey Fogg provided backup fire power. Coach John Mazurek praised his players, but had to admit he was “slightly disappointed” with the season. VARSITY Moe Bryan goes in for a lay-up. This was ex- emplified by outfielders Luis Gual (senior) and his brother Israel (freshman). This was a team that strove for defense. Tops in this area were Rich Rezes, Noel Tirado and Orlando Mar- quez. On offense Art Castellanos and Dave Cross showed great promise. Also impressive was the pitching staff, led by power pitcher Jose DeLeon. DeLeon was backed in the rotation by Ken Pajak, Greg Diaz and Ted Lapka. Len scoops up a grounder. Dave poised for a pick-off. JUNIOR VARSITY FRESHMEN Softball ... what’s on second? The PAHS softball team, coached by J. Bruno, has made great strides. We thank you for caring. Best wishes for a happy and healthy future. 175 The days that were once tomorrow are finally here. We now have a new way of living to look into. We are now on our own. We are the Class of 1982. The memories of yesterday will always be there. The places we went, the things we did, and the people we shared our times with will always have a place in our minds. Within the covers of this yearbook you will find the fragmented memories of our years at Perth Amboy High School. These words and pictures now evoke only a small portion of our class’ recollections. One day, however, many miles down the road of life, we will again open this book. Then these pages will stir strong and deep memories. We will relive both the happy and the sad moments that became part of the most valuable learning experience of our lives — our years at Amboy High. We will smile as we remember the initial immaturity of our freshman year. We will smile when we remember how we left Amboy High — proud seniors and unique individuals ready to confront the challenges of adulthood. Those days of youth will never come again, but their spirit will never leave us. Sincere happiness and success in the future to the Class of 1982. Co-Editors 176
