REFLECTIONS Perth Amboy High School Perth Amboy, New Jersey Volume 4 1981 CONTENTS Dedication..............p.3 Times of Your Life.....p.4 Seniors................p.14 Underclass.............p.70 Educators..............p.78 Special Events........p.102 Activities............p.114 Sports................p.128 Advertisements........p.154 2 As we, the Class of 1981, look back upon our four years at Amboy High, we realize that there are many individuals who have earned our gratitude. Two such individuals, who are very special to us, are Mrs. Anita Dowd and Mr. Roland Jenkins. They were our teachers, advisors, play directors, but most importantly they were our friends. We cannot hope to repay them by merely dedicating our yearbook to them. For to repay them would require much more than that. The dedication of this yearbook to them is just our way of saying thank you. Thank you, Anita and Roland, for caring. .3 Good morning yesterday, You wake up and time has slipped away the 1981 And suddenly it’s hard to find The memories you left behind Remember, do you remember? The laughter and the tears The shadow of misty yester-years The good times and the bad we’ve seen And all the others in between. Remember. Do you remember the times of your life? Reach back for the joy and the sorrow, Put them away in your mind. 8 For mem’ries are time you borrow To spend when you get to tomorrow. 9 Here comes the setting sun, The seasons are passing one by one. 10 Gather moments while you may, Collect the dreams you dream today. Remember, do you remember ■ ■ V rr': t . • ♦ - W . f ; k.w' r V: • . But I had a friend that said he needed me today, 1 didn't have time to call, or even say goodbye. For this friend of mine was in a hurry So I didn't even try. I knew you’d understand, cause that’s the way you are, Don’t worry about the distance, it’s really not that far. This friend of mine is kind of funny. You never know what he's going to do. Said he had a bad vibe with the world for a view. “Well everybody, I gotta run,” my friend says, “We can’t be late or we’ll miss all the fun. Please don’t wait up and please don’t cry, Besides, didn’t you hear me say . . . Goodbye? Ms. Andrea D. This year's Freshman Class felt just as lost and threatened as we did four years ago. We too were afraid of getting lost in the building, especially on the third floor, half of which was miss- ing. We had to learn new schedules, cycles, club and assembly changes. What is 3B assembly and when do I go? 7.3 The Sophomore year arrives with in- creased status and opportunity. A newly- acquired power is used in different ways. We, as all Sophs, learned the “ropes. We knew we had to listen for which teachers were absent and we knew which teachers we could sweet-talk and which we couldn't. At the same time we began to take our place in the daily life of P.A.H.S. We began to feel more confident, we elected class officers and we began to see our vague plans start to take on a more defi- nite shape. 75 The first year of upperclassmanship, the Ju- nior year, is filled with scholastic and social change and challenge. All of the breaks of the past seem to fade, and much responsibility comes with the new territory. As Juniors we became more deeply involved in extra-curricular activities during and after school. We began to reach out, past the high school years, toward our life goals. But, as all Juniors soon learn, the year just rushes by until the classes, dances, clubs, games and even the Junior Prom are just a memory. 77 EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS EDUCATORS Superintendents Frank Sinatra Edith Krahe Superintendent of Schools Assistant Superintendent Board of Education Henry James. Fernando Gonzalez and Catherine Onuska HO Principal Tlie students and staff at Perth Amboy High School have been a very important part of my life for over twenty years. As I assume a new professional role, I do so with mixed emotions. I am happy for the new opportunity, but saddened by the realization that my close associations with the people of Perth Amboy High School will come to an end. Being principal is not an easy job, but it has been made a happy and rewarding experience by many people over the last nine years. To everyone I extend my thanks and appreciation. I hope that in the future, I will be remembered as “your principal and above all your friend.” Best wishes and good luck to all! M.- PERTH AMBOY HIGH SCHOOL SPONSORED BY SENIOR CLASS Have you ever watched people play basketball while riding donkeys? On November 20, 1980 the Senior Class played the faculty in the annual Donkey Basketball Game. With its usual thrills and spills, the game saw the seniors trying desperately to defeat the faculty. However, the attempt failed, giving the faculty a 30-22 victory. The faculty now holds a two game lead in the series. Seniors, you can't let the faculty continue to get way with this! You've got to try harder! Maybe you should keep carrots and sugar in your pockets next time. ROTC CHINESE AUCTION b'HS OFFICERS Paula Urban — Pros. Kenneth Petersen — Vice Pres. Coach John Mazurek s impossible dream became reality. Perth Amboy, with a perfect 20-0 record, gained the MCAC league title. With the county tournament, in sight, the Panthers held off St. Peter’s to win its ninth Middlesex County Coaches Association tourna- ment, increasing its unbeaten string to 24-0. In the state tournament Perth Amboy de- feated Middletown North and Middletown South, thus placing the unbeaten (26-0) Pan- thers in the Central Jersey Group IV cham- pionship game with equally unbeaten Nep- tune. It was at this game that the Panthers’ hopes for an unbeaten season came to an end. However, it was a teriffic season; there were so many great moments we will treasure for the rest of our lives. As a fitting epilogue to the season, Larry Rudolph and Castor Redondo were named to the All MCAC First Team. Moe Bryan drives through the center for two points. Castor Redondo (below) passes the ball be- yond the opposition's hands. Larry Rudolph, the playmaking guard, scored the 1000th point of his career in this season's game against St. Mary’s of South Amboy. Kevin Crudup goes in for an easy lay-up. Larry Rudolph scored the 1000th point of his career, Perth Amboy finished its regular season at 20-0, Perth Amboy claimed first place in the Middlesex County Athletic Conference, and after five years Perth Amboy reclaimed its Middlesex County Coaches Associ- ation crown. The unbeaten Panthers defeated St. Peter’s 65-61 before 4,950 fans at the Rutgers Athletic Center. Larry Rudolph led the Panthers with 25 points despite being double teamed all night by St. Peter’s defense. Larry, however, received help from center Castor Redono who scored 16 points and grabbed twelve rebounds. Forward Dale Swindell also helped pick up the slack. He scored 16 points, pulled down 11 caroms and initiated 3 crucial steals. Consequently Larry and Dale were named to the TNT All Tourney team and Perth Amboy’s record now stood at 24-0. Yes it’s a great feeling — a great feeling for coach John Mazurek w ho had come this far before, for Larry, for Castor, for Dale, for Moe, for Willie, for the rest of the varsity team, for the cheerleaders and yes, for the Panther fans! In our hearts — Perth Amboy — you will always be Number One! It is hard to believe that those four years are now gone, and so quickly. The time has come to pass through the doors of Perth Amboy High School once again. This time we walk out, beyond those doors into a new and challenging world. We shall, through the years, pass through many new and different doors. Our years at Amboy High have begun to prepare us for those future experiences. We wish you all good luck and a happy life.
