Dedication • • • There has been one person who has greatly influenced our lives at Perth Amboy High School. Though an authority figure, he provided guidance and leadership. He was compassionate and listened to our problems. Above all, however, he was our friend. Therefore, we, the Class of 1980 dedicate this volume of Reflections to Mr. Theodore E. Greene. Challenge and Change As we the class of 1980 graduate, we mark the end of one decade and the beginning of a new one. The latter years of the ’70s brought much upheaval and many changes in our society, in our school, and in our lives. The energy crisis was and is uppermost in our minds. The Cadillac, the American dream of the large, spacious convertible has become the “last convertible.’’ Smaller, more efficient vehicles have become the order of the day. Comfort, convenience and speed are no longer our primary considerations. Our ultimate goal is some- thing called “conservation for survival.” 4 As Americans, vve are learning to do more with less. This process, well learned, will be valuable to us since the lesson it teaches is that we must have the ability to change. The coming decade will present us with many problems — some already obvious — some not yet dreamed of. It is important for us, the future leaders and citizens of our country, to understand the pressures which we have already encountered and view the resul- tant change as part of the solution to the challenges which lie ahead. 5 The ‘70s have shown us that equal opportunity and equality are positive virtues and that they can work within the structure of our society. An excellent example of this is the direction taken by women in sports. As we look through the sports section of this, the first yearbook of the ’80s, we see that there is almost no area of sports in which girls do not now participate. Al- though the idea of a co-ed foot- ball team may still be a bit too imaginative, the idea of equal op- portunity which it represents is certainly a challenge and a goal for the ’80s. Our ability to change and accept more than one way of doing things was clearly reflected in the dress of the 70s. Jeans went from casual, “cowboy” clothes to the highest rung of the fashion ladder. They were once cheap, comfortable pants; they are now costly designer fashions — for both men and women. Skirts which have, in length, gone up and down as much as the stock market, have settled somewhere in the middle, with suggestive slits at the sides, or front, or back, or both. Perhaps the most obvious change, for us, in the ’70s was the form of popular music we heard. Just as the 50s found Rock n’ Roll, and the ’60s had hard rock, the ’70s discovered Disco. The Disco scene has not only changed the music we hear, but it has also influenced the clothes we wear and the way we dance. 8 All the changes we have witnessed do not mean that change is the solution to all of the problems of the '80s. The persistance of the rock music fans is an indication of some of the conflicts that will carry us into and through the next decade. Hock fans de- nounce Disco and vice versa. We can see similar hard line opinions forming in the critical areas of inflation, conservation, energy and global peace. As the problems of the future unfold, it would be well for us to recall that we were children of the 70s. If we remember the lesson of the 70s, the need for and the role of change, we will be able to face tomorrow confidently and unafraid. 10 Seniors Denise Jenkins Senior Class Vice President The Class Of 1980 In our four years at Perth Amboy High School we have developed from restless, inexperienced teenagers into mature, young adults. Now, as we take our first steps into a new decade, let us continue to expand our minds and broaden our horizons so that we are able to cope with and adapt to a changing society. It has been an inspiration for me to have served as Senior Class President, and I wish all of you much success and happiness in your future endeavors. My God’s blessings l e with all of you. — Eliud Ramos Senior Class President Wanda Rodrigue . Senior Class Secretary J. Paluinlx and R. L. Under rookie coach Glen Davis the Panthers posted a 5-4 record and once again put Perth Amboy on a respectable footing in Middlesex county. The highlight of the season was the Thanksgiving Day thriller against Carteret. It was the final game for the twenty-two senior members, and also the make-it or break-it game for a winning season. The Panthers surged from a 14-0 first quarter deficit to an exciting 26-20 victory. Among many outstanding players were senior Byron Jones, who was selected to the All State Football Team, and who along with senior Glenn Richardson, was named to the All County and All Conference Teams. All we were sure of was the fact that all our different grammar schools had, in a sense, united and become one school which we would learn to love and respect: Perth Amboy High School. Along with our new school came a new life — a life full of changes and decisions that captured our minds and bodies only to transform each and every one of us from a child to an adult. As adults we learned how to laugh together, cry together, and even overcome together. We learned how to love one another, not for a particular race, color or nationality, but out of respect towards our mutual bond of humanity. As we make our final exit, we will each start new lives and examine new dimensions. May the lessons we learned at Perth Amboy High School serve us well. - ALMA GONZALEZ Class of 1980 (201) 442-2027 94 Smith Street Perth Amboy, N.J. Dr. Abraham A. They were years which expanded our personalities and gave 11s a deeper understanding of ourselves and of each other. During the brief time our paths crossed, we all experienced things which will remain a part of us for our entire lives. We met new people and made many friends. We shared experiences of success and joy as well as those of failure and frustration. Nevertheless we have survived, grown and matured. Whenever we close the pages of this book, we will be reminded of the passing of a decade — the ’70s. However, let us never forget the hope, the courage and the determination with which we, the Class of 1980, faced the challenge of a new decade together. Benny Gianfrancesco David Volk Co-editors 9
