Which cycle? We all have the same class, but where? On Freshman Orientation Day many new people walked into the school. At last they were students of Perth Amboy High School, and quite unaware of the many new experiences that would face them in the days and months to come. The first year of high school is certainly an interesting one. You meet many new people and are introduced to many new things. Although you may be looked down upon by some upper- classmen, you take it all in stride and keep think- ing, “my time will come. 75 76 Look at me! I'm a sophomore,” says Ana Mice! Get ycr mice! Two for a quarter OK, Diane, who is it f Sophomore year is a most important year. It is a year of dis- covery and decisions. As sophomores you get to order school rings and elect your own slate of representatives-the Sophomore Council. Even though sophomores are one year “wiser” they still have a way to go before they become upperclassmen. Brian, Edmee, Kevin and Mimi strut their stuff. ■ t 77 COUN An executive decision is made Kay Leavitt President Lva Dobos Vice President Sophomore Paula Urban Treasurer Michele Sandrik Secretary 78 CILS Jerry Gadek Vice President Natalie Carter President Junior Mr. Jack Palumbo Advisor Ms. Debbie Carr Advisor Cheryl Swallick Secretary Benny Gianfrancesco Treasurer 79 80 learning a trade. As a junior, you finally reach the rank of upperclassman, and begin to think about your life beyond the walls of the high school. 81 i • • TV • « S« Frank M. Persson The Perth Amboy High School Varsity Football Team ended the 1978 season with a 3-6 record. Although the record was below .500. the team reflected the rebirth of the Perth Amboy High football program under first year coach C. Persson. The most exciting game of the season was the impressive come from behind victory over rival Woodbridge. The Panthers pulled the game from the ashes of defeat by scoring a touchdown with only 46 seconds left on the clock. The 13-10 victory was the first over Woodbridge since 1969. Highlights on the field included Anthony Lester’s powerful offensive attack, the defensive savvy of F.ddie Lope , and the all around impressive play of Mark llawryluk. Senior Hawryluk was voted most valuable player by his fellow Panthers and was named to the first team of the following post season squads: All State, Group III, All Middlesex County , and All Conference. Downficld, after the ball. 146 This year’s Panther soccer squad was one of the youngest ever. This, coupled with an unfortunate number of injuries, caused the team to perform below .500. Coach M. George was nevertheless pleased with the team’s 6-10-1 record and professed great hopes for the future of his young team. One of the high points of the soccer season was the selection of junior, Juan Casas to the Middlesex County Coaches “All County Soccer Team . Juan Casas receives All-County plaque. VARSITY BASKETBALL n y The Perth Amboy High School Varsity Basketball squad compiled a respectable 17-7 record for the 78-’79 season. The high points of the season were an impressive 72-62 trouncing of arch rival Carteret and a cliffhanger, 53-51 last second victory over East Brunswick. Both victories were made sweeter because they avenged earlier losses to the two teams. The quaiitv of the Panthers' regular season pla earned them the seventh seed in the annual Middlesex County Coaches Tournament Perth Amboy basketball squads have won 8 out of 15 tournaments played to date, but were eliminated from this year’s tourney losing a squeaker to Colonia 53-51. In this year’s State Tournament, the Panthers got off to a good start rolling past Somerville, but ran into trouble against a powerful Long Branch squad. Although the Amboy cagers ended the season with a loss, it was an upbeat, exciting season on the court Some unforgettable highlights were Keith Waters’ offensive plays, Ricky Gatyas’ foul line magic, the rebounding skills of Byron Jones, and the 73.4 points per game average which was the best in the county. 151 THE VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Getting the rebound!
