That surround us here today, And we will not forget Tho ’ we be far, far away. To the hallow'd Halls of Ivy, Every voice will bid farewell. And shimmer off in twilight Like the old vesper bell. One day a hush will fall. Vie footsteps of us all Will echo down the hall And disappear. But as we sadly start, Our journeys far apart. A part of ev'ry heart Will linger here In the sacred Halls of Ivy Where we’ve lived And learned to know. Viat thru the years Well see you In the sweet afterglow. DEDICATION Mr. Leo W. Klein 6 In those early days of coaching. Mr. Klein would cram his track team-some times only a handful of youths-into an old car and head for New York, Pennsylvania and all points of New Jersey. The destination was anywhere his young men would find the best competition. (If he had to buy hamburgers from his own thin wallet, well, that was part of the game). Mr. Klein built a reputation for excellence. He and his little group of nomads from Perty Amboy startled the schoolboy track world, running away with Eastern and National titles in the spotlight of New York City arenas. ” Like the evolution of all animals-some growing rail to reach leaves, some attaining speed to elude danger-Mr. Klein became a hurdle specialist. He has now cleared his last hurdle, clear and straight, like all true champions. ” We, the Class of 1972, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Leo W. Senior Council Senior Class Advisor, Mr. Hand, opens another box of Sr. class candy and thinks “if I see one more can of this stuff I'll turn into one. ” 108 Class History THE CLASS OF 1972 In June. 1970 of our sophomore year, with the apprehension of the coming year, our Junior Class officers were chosen. For weeks candidates hung up campaign posters and made speeches. Finally the voting day came. Ronnie Kushner was elected President, Pat Kowalski was elected Vice-President, Carmen Cabrera Treasurer, and Sharon Gross Secretary. Also Mr. Ken Hand was appointed as our class advisor. In the fall of 1970, the Junior Council was elected from all the junior homerooms and we started the massive job that lay ahead of us. During this junior year, we became active in various activities. The first of our projects was to raise money for our Class Treasury. The largest fund raising project was that of the Junior Class Candy Sale, which required each member of our Class to sell candy. Along with the Seniors of 1971, we helped sponsor the school play. “Your Own Thing . We also had small fund-raising activities, such as the selling of school-spirited buttons, socks, cake sales, glass-collections and car washes. During this time, orders were taken for our class rings. Members of the Ring Committee, which had decided upon the ring style, had met during the summer so we could receive our rings earlier. And when they did arrive, members of the Class of 1972 were very proud of their rings. Our Junior year was not all fund-raising activities. A good part of it was spent in preparation of our Junior Prom, which was held on May 21, 1971. In December, we chose our prom theme: World of Make Relieve , prom colors: lavender and purple, class name and class motto. In January, we formed committees for Entertainment, Decorations, Refreshments, and Photography. Members of these committees spent much time and effort, so our Prom could be a success. The decorating committee had the most work to accomplish before the Prom. They decided to decorate the gym as Treasure Island and started to make the decorations. It took these active members of the Jr. Class, many hours after school each day and weekends to be ready for our Prom day. But on Prom night the work by these people really showed and our Junior Class Prom seemed really in Treasure Island , than our gym. That night we were entertained by The Arnie Platt Orchestra and enjoyed a cold buffet prepared by some of the mothers of the Junior Class. Even though the Junior Prom was a huge success, I’m sure we’ll also remember the time spent decorating the gym the night before and day of the prom. As our Junior year was coming to a close, it was again time to elect Senior Class officers. Again there was much campaigning and excitement as the candidates strove to win an office. Pat Kowalski was elected to the office of President, Cindy Bruno Vice-President and Carmen Cabrera and Sharon Gross were elected for another term as Treasurer and Secretary, respectively. The Senior Council was elected before school was let out for the summer. During the summer, the Senior Council held meetings to decide what activities we would pursue in the coming year. Also some seniors participated in car washes, held at a local gas station, so we could get an early start in raising money for our Senior Class. During this year, our Senior Class held more fund raising projects, such as a Spaghetti Dinner, Chinese Auction, Card Sale, Cake Sale, and our annual Candy Sale. Again like last year, we supported our Junior-Senior Class play Man of La Mancha . The Senior Class also participated in activities benefiting the community. During the Christmas season, a few members of the class went caroling in the Perth Amboy General Hospital, and in various sections of town. The year before, we had sponsored Toys-for-Tots drive to collect toys for underpriviledged children. And for Easter, some members of the class made favors to put on trays of children in the hospital. Our Senior Class Trip was held at the Downing town Inn in Pennsylvania on April 27, 1972. We had various activities planned during the day, which included horseback riding, basketball, tennis, etc. and a dance was held at night for us. All seniors that went on the trip, had a very enjoyable and memorable day. Our Senior Prom underwent a major change this year. We proposed to have our Prom out of town with cars, which was not done before. The Senior Council was granted permission by the Board of Education and parents after many meetings with them. Arrangements were then made to have our Prom in the Battleground Country Club in Freehold on June 2. 1972. Entertainment for our Senior Prom was provided by the Jay Owens Orchestra and Steam. The theme of the prom, chosen by the class, was Colour My World . And this night was one which we will never forget and treasure always. Before we knew it, the days of our Senior year and four years in P.A.H.S. had finally come to an end. We held our graduation exercises in Water Stadium during the evening of June 21. This was the last time we sang our Alma Mater all together as the Class of 1972. As we look back on our days in Perth Amboy High School, we the Class of 1972, can be proud of the record we have left for future classes. But without the hard work of our Advisor, officers and council members, we would not have experienced the success of our class. So as we go on, we can be grateful for the good years spent in P.A.H.S. as the Class of 1972. After winning their first two games by identical 3-0 scores, the Panthers took a quick slide downhill. They key game of the season was against J. F. Kennedy. The team was still undefeated going into the match, bur after losing the contest to the Mustangs, and the next one to South Plainfield, the Redkickers spirits were broken. The club's defense became ineffective. This ineffectiveness later spread to the offense making 1971 a season the soccer fans of Perty Amboy will never forget. As the season drew to its close, the Perth Amboy varsity basketball squad could look back on their season with a mixture of pride and disappointment. They were able to look back with pride at their final seasonal record of 24-4, which included the capturing of the Leo W. Klein Memorial Holiday Festival and the Middlesex County Coaches Tournament. The varsity could also point to their 91-55 victory over New Brunswick in the final game ever played in the historic Amboy gym. On the negative side of the ledger, however, the Panthers were defeated by St. Peter’s, 82 79, marking the first defeat for the Red and White on their home court since 1964. Hopes for a State Championship were abruptly halted in the Central Jersey Group 3 Championship game, losing to Long Branch. Generally, however, Amboy put together a solid season, with key performances being turned in by Lamont Clark, the team's leading scorer and a member of the 1972 All-County Team; Ron Kushner, the squad’s best overall player; Nate Toran, the top rebounding performer; Freshman Blake Taylor, Amboy’s hope for the future;and Louis Penny feather, who made many solid contributions toward the team. For the winter squad, brilliant efforts were turned in by Stanley Brittingham in the sprints and by Roxburg Williams, who placed third in the Middlesex County Conference because of his strong third place finish in the hurdles. The biggest hope for the team's future, however, lies in the Frosh Department, with the freshmen turning in a good season as Amboy struggles to regain its once lofty stature in Middlesex County track annals. J. 442-9833 Perth Amboy Edison You probably recognize Asarco’s Perth Amboy plant as a landmark in this area. Since 1894 the plant has provided a wide variety of jobs for thousands of high school graduates from Perth Amboy. The Asarco refinery produces six forms of copper, four kinds of lead, continuous-cast bronze, indium, palladium, platinum, gold, silver, antimony oxide, bismuth, nickel sulfate, tin tetrachloride, zinc chloride and slag. The future for these materials has never been brighter. The same is true for the young men and women who will play an important role in producing these metals in the years ahead. We invite you to talk with our Personnel Department to learn about the opportunities available at Asarco along with company benefits, including paid vacations, hospitalization and retirement program.
