Text from Pages 1 - 116 of the 1948 volume:

POLAvNO Ml K I V M A T E A I. ill A To Thee, the school we love so well, A swelling song we raise; Of classroom, field and track, we tell The record of our days. And we, thy sons and daughters, give Our bold and ardent loyally. To work, to strive, and ever live, Perth Amboy High, for Thee; To work, to strive, to ever live, Perth Amboy High, for Thee. Though years may pass, the way be long. With many a bruising fall, Then faint at first, but growing strong. There rings the clarion call: Arise, fight on for victory! Though weak, the goal must still be won Tor truth, for right, for honesty, Perth Amboy High leads on! Tor truth, for right, for honesty, Perth Amboy High leads on! I’EIITH AMBOY HIGH SCHOOL Perth Amboy, New Jersey 'oreword Ann Hardiman. 44 T HOUGH the years may pass, the way be long,” we of the Senior Class of 1948 will remember forever Amboy High as the school wherein we spent four youthful, joyous, and happy years. It has been within the ivy-clad walls of PAHS that we received our first taste of foreign languages, we first delved into the mysteries of science and mathematics, we danced at our first formals, and we cheered our teams on to exciting court and gridiron victories. We shall also remember that a tool which will enable us to work, to strive, to ever live” was obtained primarily here in the classrooms of Amboy High. That master tool is knowledge. We have obtained this all important implement only through the untiring and willing efforts of our Faculty, Principal, Superintendent, and Board of Education. To them we can only say, humbly and gratefully, Many thanks”. Soon we shall leave the sheltered security of high school life, graduate and go forward into fields of business or higher education. With the thought in mind that we may never be together again as a class, we of the Annual staff have tried to condense all of our happy and varied experiences into this yearbook. The many episodes of high school life which are now so firmly imprinted in our minds will tend to grow faint as the years pass. Thus, to refresh our memories in the future, we shall turn to our Annual, the record of our days in PAHS, and renew and strengthen that bond which links us forever to Amboy High, our Faculty, and our schoolmates. And so, dear classmates, when our light-hearted days in PAHS, the Senior Prom, and graduation are just fond memories, let us forge ahead in the future with our motto, We shall do the difficult now, but the impossible will take a little time,” on our lips, and in our hearts the closing lines of our Alma Mater, Perth Amboy High leads on.” Florence V. Stauffer r-J Jcdlea lion IN gratitude for the richness of the teaching and the wisdom of the guidance which we shared as students of English and in recognition of the inestimable service to the school, we, the Class of 1948, dedicate this record of our days” to our good friend, the former adviser of the Periscope Annual and Head of the English Department, Miss Florence V. Stauffer. Dr. William C. McGinnis Superintendent of Schools Harold Briegs (Jdo cit'd oj Education President: Mrs. A. J. Perchard Vice-President: Benjamin Goldman Secretary: Arthur Graham Charles Dorsey Frank Gasior James F. Chalmers Principal For truth, for right, for honesty, Prr A Amboy High leads on,” to the development of clear-thinking, tolerant, well-informed individuals of good character so sorely needed in the world today. For nearly fifty years our Alma Mater has been graduating students—first only a few and later by the hundreds —who, after reaching manhood and womanhood, have become worthy leaders in our community, our state, and our country. In World Wars I and II our graduates accepted their responsibilities and successfully fought to maintain our aims and the liberty of our land. Ninety-four of these made the supreme sacrifice for our country to complete the record of their days. May you always remember with genuine satisfaction the lessons learned and the happy associations with classmates and faculty in curricular and extra-curricular activities. To the Class of 1948” go the best wishes of the Faculty for success—all possible success obtained through truth, and right, and honesty. Sincerely, Zs7 - oom This section of our book is devoted to the members of the faculty of our school who have striven to impart to us the fundamentals of worthy and wholesome living in our American democracy. We, the members of the Class of 1948, wish that we could satisfactorily express our appreciation for the instruction and guidance that we have received from them in the past four years. « OFFICE OF PRINCIPAL From Left: M. Of fielJ ami track we tell . . At the crack of a gun or the sound of a whistle, Amboy High has always stepped forward in achievement, aggressiveness, and fair play. The Panthers of 1948 carried these traits into battle with them and performed admirably in victory and defeat. Highlighting a successful year, the track team’s sparkling sensation, Captain Bob Mastrovitch, at Madison Square Garden set a new national interscholastic indoor 60-yard high hurdle record with a dazzling 7.8 seconds. iLLAJt As defending Central Jersey Group IV champs, big things were expected of this year’s Panther quintet. Unfortunately Coach Rcznichak could not mold the returning veterans and the newcomers into the winning combination all hoped for. 1 herefore the season proved a disappointment to both the team and its followers. A final result of the season amounted to seven wins and twelve losses. Co-captains Alfie I.eitner and Ed Anderson combined their brilliant shooting tactics with fine floorwork to pace the team. Rangy Vic Petach was a demon under the backboards and proved to be a dangerous scorer. The other two starters, Dave O’Donnell and Warren Boyer, aided the team’s cause with fine floorwork. In the first defense of their sectional championship, Perth Amboy bowed to New Brunswick, which eliminated them from the state tournament. In State Conference play, the Panthers placed in fourth place with two wins out of seven tries. Both victories came at the expense of Asbury Park. Perth Amboy St. Mary’s fell twice to PAHS in two hard-fought contests which gave the Panthers the city crown for the sixth straight year. By virtue of these two victories, the Panthers acquired the permanent possession of the Commissioners T rophy.
