James F. Chalmers Principal YOUTH AND THE PROBLEMS OF PEACE According to scientists of the present day who developed the atomic bomb, there is no armament defense against this weapon which can destroy civilization. There is, however, another type of defense: law and order. The United Nations is the only instrument we have available in our struggles to achieve a better world. It seems painfully slow' in all of its negotiations, but it does at times give evidence of eventually reaching justifiable decisions. But even though the United Nations attained complete harmony and solved all problems, many political forces in the several countries could vitiate the many months and years of effort. What can high school students do with respect to solving this tremendous problem of world peace? In answer, young people should, among other things: 1. Remove from their minds any degree of complacency and the idea that another World War “can't happen here.” 2. Study carefully and completely the organization and explore the possibilities of the United Nations. 3. Insist that the United States and all other nations give sufficient power to this world body to enable it to enforce world peace. 4. Educate themselves to a thorough knowledge of the attitudes and ideals of their world neighbors and seek to develop world understanding and tolerance among individuals. We look to youth with its new' avenues of approach, its unprejudiced viewpoint, its honesty and kindness to lead us to the development of a strong, positive United Nations whose goals will he an era of Peace and Prosperity the like of which has never been known on the face of the earth.
