ALMA MATER To Thee, the school we love so well, A swelling song we raise, Of classroom, field and truck, we tell The record of our days. And we, thy sons and daughters, give Our bold and ardent loyally. To work, to strive, and ever live, Perth Amboy High, for Thee; To work, to strive, to ever live, Perth Amboy High, lor Thee. Though years may pass, the way be long, With many a bruising fall, Then faint at first, but growing strong, There rings the clarion call: Arise, fight on for victory! Though weak, the goal must still be won,-For truth, for right, for honesty, Perth Amboy High leads on! For truth, lor right, for honesty, Perth Amboy High leads on! I I I FOREWORD • Four years ago, we entered the ivy-clad walls of PERTH AMBOY HIGH SCHOOL as the CLASS OF 1946. Today as we are about to leave them, we have gained a wider knowledge of the world and its problems, through the instruction and the guidance of our teachers, whom we respect and admire. As we say farewell to our Alma Mater, to our Superintendent, our Principal, our teachers, and to our classmates, we realize that what we accomplish in the world of tomorrow will depend upon how well we have absorbed the knowledge imparted to us. When we shall indulge in retrospect, the hours spent here will be among our fondest memories. During these four years, the United States has been engaged in the greatest war in its history and in the history of the world. During this great conflict, science has made tremendous strides in the discovery and perfection of atomic energy, radar, television, jet- propulsion and numberless other scientific wonders. With the aid of these discoveries, the forces of the United Nations have triumphed. But now a more gigantic task burdens the world and more especially the United States. It is the responsibility of our country more than any other nation to perpetuate the peace of the world, and it devolves upon us, the voters of tomorrow, to carry forth the democratic ideals of liberty and peace to all peoples of the universe. It is into this world of rapid change that we are about to embark on a voyage that will carry us, in our respective vocations, to many far-distant points of the globe. And so, dear Classmates . .. “Let us go forth undismayed, a brave new world is rising from the ruins: Build it and say, here is the world we made. Although determined, the brilliant play of East Side’s All-Staters, Zmijewski and Sauchelli, thwarted our attempts at scoring. Manny Batista, however, managed to intercept a pass and race the remaining 65-yard distance for a score, our only one. Camden was a different story! Playing in mud up to their ankles, the Panthers' superb teamwork resulted in a score when Joe Leshick plunged over from the two-inch line. This game ended as a heart-breaker, however, when Camden, completely outplayed all day, managed to score on a pass in the last play of the game. The pass was in the air when the game was over but it was completed, and the score counted. With Cilfton came our first victory. With a 30-yard run by Steve Zambo and then in the waning moments of the game, with Clifton leading 12-7, Dick Kulesza plunged through the center, gave the ball to Leshick who lateraled to Zambo going around end. Zambo in turn threw a pass to Gresh who scored standing up. An outstanding feature of this play was Billy Kopervas' terrific block which cleared the way for Gresh. The Asbury Park game was won with little difficulty. Kopervas scored on a 15-yard pass from Frontera, and Zambo plunged over from the five. Leshick's attempted conversion was good. Dick Kulesza showed exceptionally well in this game. New Dorp served more or less as a breather in our schedule, the outstanding play being a 60-yard run by Johnny Dziedzic. Woodbridge was another heartbreaker. The Panthers dominated the game, and scored early on a 35-yard run by Zambo. Two touchdowns, however, were called back, including a beautiful 50-yard pass from Kulesza to Ziznewski. An intercepted lateral near the end of the game by a Woodbridge player gave them their only score, and the successful conversion decided the game. The New Brunswick game was also lost by one point, when Al Salva of Brunswick, having scored both their touchdowns, kicked the winning placement. The following week, a bitterly-contested South River game ended in a scoreless tie. Carteret, our last game, brought our highest score, the outstanding plays being a 35-yard run by Zambo and a 60-yard burst by Ernie Oresko. Playing on a wet field, our boys ended their career in a blaze of glory. Although teamwork was the important factor, some of our boys distinguished themselves admirably. Les Theophilakos received state recognition for his beatiful line play, and was chosen for the all-state team, the first Amboyan in several years. Dick Kulesza also distinguished himself and made the all-county team. Others, such as Ziznewski, Zambo, Billy Kopervas, and Tony Brown also gained county-wide recognition. Looking back, the only thing we can say is that the coaching of Messrs. Rosen, Salaky, Reznichak, and Marr resulted in a swell team, but more important, it molded a fine bunch of boys. [75] BASKETBALL Our basketball team completed a successful season in 1945-46. With only Captain Mike Subotich as a hold-over from last year’s varsity, the team started out comparatively green, but soon was molded into a smooth, fighting championship team. The Panthers, by defeating St. Mary's twice, captured the City Championship again. Going on to defeat county rivals, the Panthers clinched the Group I Middlesex County Championship. Victors in their frst fve contests, the Panthers surprised everyone by defeating Camden, last season's State Champions, by 25-23. At Trenton the Panthers encountered their first defeat by losing to a strong Trenton team. One of the most thrilling games was the second game with Camden. The score seesawed back and forth. With a few seconds to play and Camden leading by two points, Buckewiecz was fouled. Given two shots, he toed the foul line, sank the first and then the second, when the crowd roared. The regular game ended when the Panthers lost in the extra period by two points. A great loss came to our team when John Dziedic entered the Marine Corps after the Camden game. He had been one of our stars. Defeating Metuchen, St. Peters and South River, the Panthers entered the finals with Dunellen. The team, tired from their hectic schedule, playing six games in 12 days, lost to Dunellen by the slim score of 37-34. Amboy was eliminated by Elizabeth in the first round of the State Tournament by the score of 39-27. Outstanding on the court this season were: Buckewiecz, Schlesinger, Leshick, and Captain Subotich. Two others who deserve honorable mention are Theophilakos and Zambo. Stephen Zambo Coach.- Stanley Rosen Tennis Captain-. Roy Doctofsky Coach: Donald C. Wolfe Track Captain: Chester Jean Field Captain: Lester Theophilakos Coach: Leo Klein Feb. 23 National Scholastic Meet: Harold Lincoln, Eighth in Quarter Mile. [78} BASEBALL Returning to the diamond this year, the veterans of last year will find themselves under the able leadership of another returning veteran. Coach Tex Rosen. The coach intends to start the season off without an experienced third baseman, shortstop, catcher, and outfielder, but Joe leschick, Joe Sop-orowski, Puffy Schlesinger, and Robert Bella will be trying hard to fill these essential positions. The only vets from last season are Frank Buckiewicz, Steve Zambo, Richard Peterson, and the pitching squad composed of Kushma, Ricci, Michalsky, and Smusanitz. Bisha and Oresko appear to be very promising for the catcher's position. As yet the team has chosen no captain, but it will probably be Frank Buckiewicz or Steve Zambo.
