ALMA MATER To Thee, the school we love so well, A swelling song we raise, Of classroom, field and track, we tell The record of our days. And we, thy sons and daughters, give Our bold and ardent loyalty. To work, to strive, and ever live, Perth Amboy High, for Thee; To work, to strive, to ever live, Perth Amboy High, for Thee. Though years may pass, the way be long, With many a bruising fall, Then faint at first, but growing strong. There rings thy clarion call: Arise, fight on lor victory! Though weak, the goal must still be won; For truth, for right, for honesty, Perth Amboy High leads on! For truth, for right, for honesty, Perth Amboy High leads on! FOREWORD • Although we are still in the midst of fighting and winning this cruel war, we are already discussing the world of tomorrow and the peace to come. When, with unconditional surrender, hostilities finally cease, and peace again reigns over the earth, it will be for us, the present generation, to make sure that this peace will be a lasting and durable one. It will be our duty to see that a recurrence of a conflict such as the present one may never again be visited upon the human race. It will be up to us to make certain that those men and women who have given their utmost in this ordeal of battle may not have died in vain. The postwar world that we graduates are going to enter will not be a world in which there is a life of leisure. It will be a world of reconstruction and rehabilitation. We, with our youthful ambitions, must make this earth habitable once more. We shall have to reeducate the world to live normal lives in an environment of tranquillity. It is not going to be an easy task that we shall have to do,-but with the training and guidance that have been given us in school, we are confident that we can successfully undertake and complete such a venture. To make ourselves more capable of doing a worthwhile mission, however, we should all further our education. Whether we do this in professional or practical areas will depend upon the needs and abilities of the individual. While we may attempt to look forward into the future, we must remember that we cannot forget about the past. Since this is true, we have prepared this Annual in order that we may indulge in reminiscences, and recall the episodes and life we had at a time when history was being written. Whenever we muse over the trials and tribulations that we had while in High School, let us be mindful not only of the lessons these have taught us, but also of the opportunities to put into practice all that we have learned. Remembering then, that the trials and tribulations of today are merely the histories of tomorrow, let us go forward with vim and determination to do our part in creating a better world! Alexander Pelach Editor-in-Chief ALEXANDER M. PETACH T H E PERISCOPE PERTH AMBOY HIGH SCHOOL PERTH AMBOY NEW JERSEY Business Manager MARILYN MARGARETTEN • Directing us in school, preparing us for an auspicious future, she has faithfully and successfully been our guiding hand. Florence Tucholsky Another friendly soul who is neat. She aims to be a typist but we guess that she'll not give up her great interest in roller-skating. [70] Helen Urban For her inexhaustible supply of energy, she will come to mind. With a ready smile and a capable way ol doing things, Helen will advance quickly alter graduation. Margaret A. Claire Wagner Claire hopes to attend an Art school where she will study dress designing. From her neat appearance, we believe that she will be successful. Eleanor Walenciewicz El has many friends, but she yearns lor more. With her friendly, placid manner, she will seek her fortune in the business world. Eleanor Wargo A sense of humor equaled by few and a knack for getting the facts are sure to make El's column widely read when some day she becomes a famous journalist. Jeanette Wasylyck Friendly and gay is Jennie. Besides her school work, she also has a love lor dancing. She'll still find time to become an efficient secretary. Eleanor Wataha Another quiet senior who found time lor school activities, especially sports. Thoughtful and considerate, she is planning to become a nurse. Olga Waverczak Friendly, yet outwardly bashful, she hopes to develop a musical talent into something really great. [73] John W. Webber Arlene Wedeen Mark L. Weitzen Although Johnny is rather shy, he is a friendly all-round fellow who greets you at all times with a smile. He plans to become a business man. An all-around girl who has the skill of putting everybody at ease. She plans to attend college for preparation in languages. We classify Mark as a popular member of our class. In basketball he excels. He has hopes of becoming a physical director, a career in which he will succeed. Janice White Edward J. Wojnar Helen Wojnar Jan is a comely blonde who possesses a lovely singing voice. Some day perhaps she'll make her patients well by singing to them. Ed is a shy boy, and a born artist. He has won a correspondence course in art. Maybe he will be able to use his art when he becomes a business man. Her amiability will guide this charming girl to a fine secretarial position. We know success awaits. Raymond Wolchak Irene Wowk Antoinette Woznak A quiet, handsome lad who is very conscientious in his studies. A friendly smile and understanding make Ray a favorite. She seems to be a merry lass who leads others to be happy, too. We ore nof sure what she wishes to be, but she has our good wishes. Toni aspires to be a secretary. Her dependability and efficiency will help her achieve her intentions. Edward C. Wrobel Irene Yacina Julia Yanoso This athletic fellow is quite the boy around school, and a favorite of the fair sex. He plans to enter the Air Corps after he is graduated. Irene has o laugh which is quite distinctive. Because of her friendliness and appreciation of what others do for her, she is bound to succeed as a secretary. No matter what the activity, Julia was always ready. She shows a great willingness to co-operate, and should therefore be a capable secretary. Anna Yaros This future Florence Nightingale bubbles over with keen delight in fun. She will bring delight and cheer to her patients. Margaret Yavor Marge says she wants to be a secretary, but we are not sure that she means it. Anyway, we know that she will be a friendly soul. William Zak Although mechanically inclined, he plans to become a big time building contractor. In school he took an active interest in sports. Charles Zanzalari This shy Adonis excels in the baseball world and is interested in radio work. His height gives him a striking appearance. Ann Zajansckowsky Her flare for clothes and her friendliness make her quite irresistible. Tell us, Ann, how did you get your beautiful wavy hair? Claire Zaremba This pretty cheerleader is insistent that she will become a nurse. Tell us, who is this Speed she is invariably talking about? Stanley Zdunek Good looks and neat dress make Stan a person one notices. A trifle on the shy side, he some day hopes to become a draftsman. Martha Ziemba This lass with the striking blond hair is a delightful dancing partner. She specializes in dressmaking and design when she is not too busy working. Bernardine Zolota She can always be found in the midst of a merry crowd whose laughter is usually caused by her amusing jokes. She sparkles with humor. John Zsilavetz Active on both football and basketball teams, John has a captivating smile which seems to have an effect on the girls. Oh, Johnny, ohi Shoeshinel Lorraine Zweigbaum Here's a real lady with soft-spoken sweetness and laughing eyes. Despite absences due to illness she has maintained very high grades. Lee Emery Another senior who chose to leave early to serve his country in its Maritime Service. We wonder if he will choose to continue his work in that branch after the war. [77] Frank Barna His main ambition was to become a business man, but the war interrupted his plans. Now he is serving his country as a seaman in the Maritime Service. Bernard Bednarz With a gleam in his eye, Bernard went about his tasks silently. Then he caused many a girl’s heart to skip a beat; now that he's in the army uniform, he must cause more of a flutter. Victor Diamond Athletically inclined, Buddy played basketball and football before he left for the Navy. Even without his letters he was a general favorite. William Drost We'd have been glad to have kept William in our classes, but he saw fit to leave for the Merchant Marine. While here, his major interest was basketball. Irving Goldmintz Before he left for the Merchant Marine all his talk was of owning his own gas station. Here's hoping that when he returns his wish is fulfilled! Robert Hilker This good-natured boy has answered the call to serve his land with the Merchant Marine. A faithful sports fan, he seems to have won the friendship of many while he attended school. Louis Madrazzo There are few seniors who can compare with Louis whose ability in handling motors and machines makes him an asset to the Navy in which he has chosen to serve. Michael Peles There is never a dull moment when Mizzie is around. He was a jolly fellow who always gave us a good laugh. Unfortunately, he left for the Navy before the end of the year. Thomas Shoobridge This husky senior was another favorite who left us for the Navy early in the year. We wonder in what sport he would have entered if he had continued in school. Paul Tirpak A jolly fellow who has given up his last year of high school to do his part toward a quicker victory. He entered the Navy. The season was one which will stay in the hearts of all the Perth Amboy followers. Though the losses outnumbered the wins, the team showed plenty of color and good sportsmanship. The initiative and spirit displayed by the team were the main factors in the winning of the games. Lack of experience was responsible for losing many hard-fought contests. In the traditional games with P.A. St. Marys, our city rival, the Panthers won both games by close scores. This year, without the services of Charles Oliver and three lettermen, the team is not expected to do as well. In regular seasonal matches, Asbury Park, Plain-field, and Pingry Prep were defeated twice and Westfield once, the only loss coming in the return match with Westfield. VA R SITY Since the baseball season doesn't start until after the Annual goes to press, only a prediction can be made as to what the future holds for our varsity. Last year's record of nine won and six lost is impressive, especially when one looks closely at the scores of each game. Coach Steven Salaky has Captain Don Deverin, along with veterans Bob Anderson, Jack Brennan, Steve Zambo and Frank Kopervas as a nucleus for his team. Although such regulars as Ed Peldyak, Ed Sroaka and Ray Surma are now in the armed forces, one can be sure that the remainder of the squad will continue to show the drive that has al- GIRLS' For many years after graduation, the senior girls will remember the fun they had in Gym, especially those exercises on Mondays from Miss Bjork and Miss Kozusko. We used to be amused watching one another to see who performed them the best, and then we'd have a good laugh. Remember staying after school for chewing gum or for forgetting to have our sneaks and gym suits cleaned by inspection time after the holidays, and the fifty-word compositions we'd have to write? How about the days we'd have dancing with the fellows instead of having Gym, and the suspense until we saw who our partners would be? Basketball starts off the after-school sports year, with volley ball, soccer, kickball and swimming following. The girls have an opportunity to swim at the Y pools. In order to gain a chevron, they must go fourteen times. Archery and golf are car- At this writing, the 1945 tennis season hasn't started, but the team will probably be composed of Captain Harvey Karkus, Lee Barber, Joseph Hornsby, Martin Lowenkopf, and Jack Stillman. The schedule is expected to include: Asbury Park, Highland Park, Plainfield and Westfield. Tennis is a spring sport, with only junior and senior girls eligible to participate. In order to earn a chevron one must participate in after-school sports and obey the set rules. Twenty chevrons are needed for a chenille PA” and half as many for a felt one. Here are a few of our outstanding athletes who have earned chevrons by participating in sports: Ethel Sabo, Mary Paone, Jennie Petrovski, Naomi Bryan and Helen Poteraj. Of course, we can't omit our head cheerleaders, Claire Holland and Betty Mikkelsen, and cheering with them, Claire Zaremba and Betty Lovas, all seniors. Now that the school year has come to a close, we seniors already miss the fun we had in Gym. We only hope that the underclassmen will get as much enjoyment out of it as we did, we, the Class of '45.
