Its people were divided into two opposing factions; one group frowned upon individualism, and advocated a mechanistic system of life, while the other group cherished the individual s rights to ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ and sanctioned the idea of spiritual freedom for all. “When it became evident that the world was not large enough to peacefully contain two governing ideals so fundamentally alienated, men armed, believing that artillery was the only appeaser. At work in the Manual Arts Room “As the Spirit of Democracy, which encouraged intellectual freedom, realized that the final decision would have to germinate from the natural desires of men’s minds, that mind rules over matter, it bade Youth, its future leaders, select that governing pattern which was more conducive to happiness.
