Friday's Cast was headed by Maxine McDannel and Marilyn Ninnis, and Saturday's by Sylvia Binkowski and joan Sherman. An autobiographical comedy by Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough, the play had one of the largest turnouts in the school's history. An ocean voyage, a murder and a siege of bedbugs are but a few of the elements that went to make up one of the most hilarious senior plays ever presented. During its rather short existence it has proven itself in these ways. The group has made great successes of the drives it has sponsored, such as the Red Cross, Red Feather, clothing, and paper drives. Along with these activities, the Council has sponsor- ed a variety show and is well on the way to getting a traffic light at 7 Mile and Ryan roads. This organization also provides excellent experience in parliamentary procedure for its members. l.l:l 'l' to Rlfilll Billie launplvcll, Carl Scliellitlg l'at Mtllanncl Don Beattie, Sylyia Binkonski, Maxine Mcllannel. Three golden firsts studded a suc- cessful and exciting year-the American Legion city oratorical title, the Hearst Oratorical metropolitan championship, and that pinnacle of every debater's dreams-the state champion- ship finals. The debaters opened the season with the largest and strongest squad in Pershing's history. Nine of the thirteen members won their spurs in interscholastic competition. Catherine Archambeau, Lois Ann Chlopan, Kenneth Copp, Florence Dombrowski, Catherine Gemmel, Kermit Graves, Bruce Herbert, Carol Hodge, Richard Learmont, Ruth McGregor, William Mclntyre, .Ioan Pinkos, and Virginia Satan comprised the roster. In the four rounds of the general schedule, the squad split decisions with Ann Arbor, trounced Melvindale and River Rouge twice each, and then in turn was whipped twice by Lansing Eastern. In the Bi-County League schedule, Ferndale was beaten twice, and split decisions were obtained against U. of D. High and Hazel Park. This left the squad with a preliminary season record of nine victories and five defeats, enough to qualify them for the elimination series. In the district tournament held at De La Salle. Pershing's duo of Carol Hodge and Joan Pinkos swept to three successive victories in one afternoon. Ypsilanti Central was stopped 3 to 0, De La Salle was overwhelmed by an- other unanimous judges' decision, and Per- Forensic Follies The Ferocious Four furnished the barbershop music for thc lorcnslt Follies on March 4 and 5 on the auditorium stage. fLeft to rightl Bill Mclntyre, john Matthes, Bruce Herbert, and Kermit Graves shing's ancient nemcsis-Hamtramck-was whipped for the district title 2 to 1, in sweet revenge for the Cosmos' triumph of last year in the same situation. In the quarter finals, the girls went on to beat Plymouth 2 to 1, and in the semi-finals Albion was defeated, also by Z to 1. With five successive wins to their credit, Carol and 'Ioan met Lansing Eastern for the state title at Rackham Auditorium in Ann Arbor and staged a scintillating display of delivery, logic, evidence, and aggressive attack. Fate, however, denied them the decision 2 to I. Nevertheless, the girls received gold watches from the Free Press and the school a bronze trophy from the University of Michigan. The season's record was closed with fourteen wins in twenty debates, a percentage of .700. Kermit Graves continued the victory streak by taking the American Legion district and zone titles in oratory and extempore speaking and placing third in the state finals, to win a total of S155 in prizes. Bill McIntyre then joined the parade of victors by winning the district, high school, and city titles in the Hearst Contest with his stirring oration on Citizen Ben Franklinf, In the traditional school forensic contests, jean Piolowski won declamation honors, joan Pinkos retained her ex- tempore speaking crown, Shirley Devore won her third school title, this time in interpretative reading, and Natalie Klimecki took the oratorical laurels. In the district con- tests against Hamtramck, Hazel Park, and Northeastern, Pershing took three out of four firsts, dominating the picture for the third successive year. Oretta Davis won in declamation, Shirley in interp , and Robert Mollar in oratory. In the regional finals Pershing failed to place for the first time since 1944, the law of averages finally catching up with an institution that had Uhogged' forensic honors completely during the early Part of the year. As we go to press, Bill McIntyre is busily preparing for the Midwest Hearst contest in Chicago, joan Pinkos and Virginia Saran are boning up for the Free Press 32500 debate scholarship competition, and Carol Hodge is get- ting ready to represent Pershing in the Century of Progress Club contest for the second successive year. These people will try to add luster to a record already crowned with nine titles in interscholastic competition. Pershing has become the school to beat in forensics. From now on her speech representatives have a great tradition to culti- vate and maintain.
