Alley, Assistant Principal ' Because she has, for so many years, been the source of the high standards associated with Pershing High School, and because after her long and faithful service to the school, she is leaving, we the class of June, l944, respectfully dedi- cate our book to Miss Sadie M. Alley, assistant principal. To many of us, Miss Alley has represented the peak of education, the ideal type of person to help keep a school running smoothly and effectively, while gaining, year by year, a finer reputation. Yes, we owe a lot to her and may we say, Miss Alley, that your departure will be a source of regret to all. '

The spring of l944 will be recorded in history books as the period during which the long awaited D day was ex- pected to come. ln the hearts and minds of the seniors, however, only fond thoughts of happy school days will be remembered. But more important were the visits from our boys who are fighting to preserve all the liberties we enjoy. lt is partly because of these boys and partly because we wanted to do our part in the war that we all backed the Fourth War Loan drive to buy a P-Sl Mustang fighter plane. The hard work that went into making the drive a success was rewarded by the thrill of seeing a plane with the words, John J. Pershing High School, Detroit written on it. lt was satisfying to hear reports from the men who flew the Mustangs saying that it was the fastest plane in the air, that because of this plane the enemy was really feeling the blows of the allies. ls it any wonder, then, that the classbook was named the Mustang? lt typifies the spirit and ambition of every graduate of June, l94-4.
