'7fw MUSTANG Pershing High School DETROIT MICHIGAN In our class, there is wisdom, strength, and foresight--we're a class that is looking forward to an unknown future. 1 After many years of untiring effort and patient labor, we have come to the crossroads which will lead us to different undertakings. We can look back on our high school days with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Pershing High School has given us something priceless-a foundation with which to build in the future. I Many of us will be leaving to join the ranks of marching men, to use the knowledge we acquired to better the world for posterity. BOW Principal This ls Your World Your high school, a world within a world, like a city within a state, a state within a nation, all linked by the virtues of a democratic government, challenges your every movement and thought to bring forth sin- cere determination to measure up to your ability in work, study, and play. Never before have American youths had such an important part to'play as during the present world conflict. This is as it should be, because among the many ideals at stake in this struggle, is the perpetuity of democratic education. For all the privileges of our modern education, for all the opportunities bestowed upon you as a result of your education, what does society expect from you? One answer-A Good Citizen. A good citizen is first of all educated to his capacity of learning. He is industriousg' he has a good character, he gets along with his' neighbors, he is tolerant, he is reverentihe assumes the responsibilities of citizenship. He cher- ishes the most important symbol of democratic citizenship--the ballot. More important than who the candidates are is the fact that elections are. Your education must underpin the privileges and powers of citizenship with the qualities of integrity and intelligence. Only through the educational pro- cesses, consciously directed toward this objective, can the success of democracy be guaranteed. Assume the role of responsibility in your daily routine. The fulfillment of this obligation is im- portant to you, to the society in which you live, and to your school. Pershing High School is not just a building of brick and stone, but a community of 2500 fine American boys and girls. Yes, that's Pershing High School, a democratic institution like so many in this great land of ours, where education and coopera- tion, tolerance and honest effort, are a Beachhead to Victory and Peace.
