Umwm 4 Opening its fourth semester of intensive war effort work, the Pershing War Council led the school to victory in three major drives this year. in January and February, more than 400 Pershing Blockbusters, divided into twelve teams captained by students and sponsored by faculty members, raised more than Sl l0,000 through the sale of bonds in the Fourth War Loan campaign. This broke all previous records and was lV2 times last September's total. ln March, Pershing students contribut- ed Sl376 to the Junior Red Cross War Fund, ranking only behind Redford and Central among the city high schools and auadrupling the l943 total. During the same month, students brought 2l,OOO pounds of waste paper to school in a one- day drive, more than three times last fall's amount. As we go to press, plans are underway for a blood donor campaign in June and another waste paper drive. The sale of bonds and stamps was also stimulated through the semi-annual Victory Queen contest. The Speaker's Bureau made several significant contributions this year to the war effort. lts members presented skits at study hall bond rallies, and delivered more than ZOO talks and announcements in groups and English classes on war activ- ities. More than a dozen members spoke in various elementary schools in the Persh- ing area on different occasions. ln speech contest activities, Pershing students failed to win district honors in the University of Michigan events for the first time since 1938. Elvira Smolinski and Del- phine Gordon placed second and third in oratory, Don Bondy and Jean Ostby were third and fourth in extempore speaking, David Schachschneider and Patricia Mc- Carthy were second and fifth in declama- tion, and Arline Subb and Barbara Wickel were third and fourth in interpretive reading. Elvira, Don, Patricia, and Arline were school champions in their respective events. Peter Licata won a S25 war bond in the Detroit Times John Paul Jones con- test, and placed second in the district con- test in that event. The officers of the activities this term were Don Bondy, president, Leona Duyck, vice-president, Arline Subb, s e c r e t a r y, Mary Kathryn Mott, treasurer, and Mar- garet Risko, assistant treasurer.
