'7fw MUSTANG Pershing High School DETROIT MICHIGAN In our class, there is wisdom, strength, and foresight--we're a class that is looking forward to an unknown future. 1 After many years of untiring effort and patient labor, we have come to the crossroads which will lead us to different undertakings. We can look back on our high school days with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Pershing High School has given us something priceless-a foundation with which to build in the future. I Many of us will be leaving to join the ranks of marching men, to use the knowledge we acquired to better the world for posterity. In this book, we re-live the joys that so swiftly came to an end and in so doing grasp tighter the chains that only friendships can bestow. EMIL ONYSHKEVICH, l2A President 9 3 QQ' at af LOREN C. BOW Principal This ls Your World Your high school, a world within a world, like a city within a state, a state within a nation, all linked by the virtues of a democratic government, challenges your every movement and thought to bring forth sin- cere determination to measure up to your ability in work, study, and play. Never before have American youths had such an important part to'play as during the present world conflict. This is as it should be, because among the many ideals at stake in this struggle, is the perpetuity of democratic education. For all the privileges of our modern education, for all the opportunities bestowed upon you as a result of your education, what does society expect from you? One answer-A Good Citizen. A good citizen is first of all educated to his capacity of learning. He is industriousg' he has a good character, he gets along with his' neighbors, he is tolerant, he is reverentihe assumes the responsibilities of citizenship. He cher- ishes the most important symbol of democratic citizenship--the ballot. More important than who the candidates are is the fact that elections are. Your education must underpin the privileges and powers of citizenship with the qualities of integrity and intelligence. Only through the educational pro- cesses, consciously directed toward this objective, can the success of democracy be guaranteed. Assume the role of responsibility in your daily routine. The fulfillment of this obligation is im- portant to you, to the society in which you live, and to your school. Pershing High School is not just a building of brick and stone, but a community of 2500 fine American boys and girls. Yes, that's Pershing High School, a democratic institution like so many in this great land of ours, where education and coopera- tion, tolerance and honest effort, are a Beachhead to Victory and Peace. LOREN C. BOW, Principal. The spring of l944 will be recorded in history books as the period during which the long awaited D day was ex- pected to come. ln the hearts and minds of the seniors, however, only fond thoughts of happy school days will be remembered. But more important were the visits from our boys who are fighting to preserve all the liberties we enjoy. lt is partly because of these boys and partly because we wanted to do our part in the war that we all backed the Fourth War Loan drive to buy a P-Sl Mustang fighter plane. The hard work that went into making the drive a success was rewarded by the thrill of seeing a plane with the words, John J. Pershing High School, Detroit written on it. lt was satisfying to hear reports from the men who flew the Mustangs saying that it was the fastest plane in the air, that because of this plane the enemy was really feeling the blows of the allies. ls it any wonder, then, that the classbook was named the Mustang? lt typifies the spirit and ambition of every graduate of June, l94-4. ecficaifirm i Miss Sadie M. Alley, Assistant Principal ' Because she has, for so many years, been the source of the high standards associated with Pershing High School, and because after her long and faithful service to the school, she is leaving, we the class of June, l944, respectfully dedi- cate our book to Miss Sadie M. Alley, assistant principal. To many of us, Miss Alley has represented the peak of education, the ideal type of person to help keep a school running smoothly and effectively, while gaining, year by year, a finer reputation. Yes, we owe a lot to her and may we say, Miss Alley, that your departure will be a source of regret to all. Y am frusf We 'ae paaucf Umwm 4 Opening its fourth semester of intensive war effort work, the Pershing War Council led the school to victory in three major drives this year. in January and February, more than 400 Pershing Blockbusters, divided into twelve teams captained by students and sponsored by faculty members, raised more than Sl l0,000 through the sale of bonds in the Fourth War Loan campaign. This broke all previous records and was lV2 times last September's total. ln March, Pershing students contribut- ed Sl376 to the Junior Red Cross War Fund, ranking only behind Redford and Central among the city high schools and auadrupling the l943 total. During the same month, students brought 2l,OOO pounds of waste paper to school in a one- day drive, more than three times last fall's amount. As we go to press, plans are underway for a blood donor campaign in June and another waste paper drive. The sale of bonds and stamps was also stimulated through the semi-annual Victory Queen contest. The Speaker's Bureau made several significant contributions this year to the war effort. lts members presented skits at study hall bond rallies, and delivered more than ZOO talks and announcements in groups and English classes on war activ- ities. More than a dozen members spoke in various elementary schools in the Persh- ing area on different occasions. ln speech contest activities, Pershing students failed to win district honors in the University of Michigan events for the first time since 1938. Elvira Smolinski and Del- phine Gordon placed second and third in oratory, Don Bondy and Jean Ostby were third and fourth in extempore speaking, David Schachschneider and Patricia Mc- Carthy were second and fifth in declama- tion, and Arline Subb and Barbara Wickel were third and fourth in interpretive reading. Elvira, Don, Patricia, and Arline were school champions in their respective events. Peter Licata won a S25 war bond in the Detroit Times John Paul Jones con- test, and placed second in the district con- test in that event. The officers of the activities this term were Don Bondy, president, Leona Duyck, vice-president, Arline Subb, s e c r e t a r y, Mary Kathryn Mott, treasurer, and Mar- garet Risko, assistant treasurer. 'Ewa R yi 1 .H QI we gw., 9' Sefw-ice Glad bi of Sefwice lla All The fine appearance of our halls, lock- ers, and cafeteria is due to the fine help and co-operation of Pershing's Service Club. Under the sponsorship of Miss Gertrude Englemen and Mr. J. B. Rogvoy, the club has a membership of about lOO students. Meetings are held during early and late groups once monthly in room 2Ol. The officer's are Margery Percival, president, Sophie Levonik and Barbara Gravelle, vice- president, Irene Gittins, secretary, and Betty Griffin, treasurer. The functions of the club members are to act as hall guards, to keep the halls clean, to check on lockers, to act as ushers on special occasions, and to be of general service to the school. Zawlf 4a 1'f Jfafi Une, Among its other record-breaking accomplish- ments, the june '44 class can also boast a record sale of play tickets. The SlOOO taken in was the highest total ever collected at a play. And it's no wonder it proved so popular! Under the able direction of Miss Ruth Brady, the cast started rehearsals early, attempting to turn out a play even better than previous ones. lt was difficult to believe that the fine acting was poured forth from our own classmates, who, seemingly, had no experience for this sort of thing. ln the leading role of Nana, a cantankerous, boogie- woogie addict of sixty, Elsie Evans and Delores Rabat gave memorable performances. Lucille Pieti, as Lily, turned from an apparently shy damsel to a most energetic actress. As the young, novel- writing son, Warry, Andy Serocki and Eddie Purdo gave excellent performances. Norma MCC-regor was the blonde heroine, going from the arms of Bob Sanderson, who was Sherwin, to those of Ray Sier- adzki and jesse Milhouse, who alternated in the role of Todd Calloway. The New York society par- ents of Sherwin, Mr. and Mrs. Parker, were por- trayed by George Popa and Virginia Lewandowski, who could probably have fooled anybody with their acting and make-up. The young, eleven-year-old daughter, Penelope, forever getting into mischief, was brought to life-by Shirley Rowles. Penelope's mother, Mrs. Laura R ea rd o n, a long-suffering woman who continually tried to elevate her fam- ily, was portrayed ably by Grace Coviak and Laura Ann Hawes. Her mechanically-minded husband, who cared nothing for his wife's social aims, was brought to life by Anthony Sosich. Last, but defin- itely not least, was Essiel loan Collings, as the maid always interested in the family troubles, gave a performance that will long be remembered. Z S z 9,0114 S pu-4151 1 5 I s .s Q 1 .. . ,.., . This past year, girls have been more than active in the field of sports. At the close of the basketball season, their stand- ing was found to be the same as the Past few years. The fact that we didn't have a gym for the games did not hinder their eagerness to fight. The team suffered 4 losses as against 2 victories. Among those who were outstanding in action this term, but will not return to the court next season are Evelyn Carter lvars- ity captainl, Marie Eldon, Delores Hill, Eetelee Martin, Arline Subb, Fern Leipold, Phyllis Shuell, and Manager, Ruth Lund. For the first time in several years, Pershing again has a Girls' Golf Team. Coach Schmid had Marguerite Ballor, Bodil Ree, Phyllis Shuell, Eileen Swanson, and Gloria Adams on the team this term as the only experienced golfers. lt is more than likely that a Girls' Golf Team will be a permanent fixture at Pershing. Girls who participated in all matches were, at the close of the season, rewarded with school letters. Games were played at Palmer Park and other driving ranges. Tennis, another popular sport among the girls, was coached by Miss Prottengeier. All practice and league games were played at .Jayne Field and on our own courts. The team was honored to have Gloria King, Michigan State Open Girls' Tennis Cham- pion, as one of its star players. lt finally happenedl After three years of practically losing game after Jgarne, the '44 basketball team finally broke the school's jinxl Contributing greatly to the victories was the fine playing of Charles DeLorean, who gained a berth on the second All-City team. Chuck scored l l7 points for the season with Eugene Curn doing very well with a total of SO points. Many of the boys from the reserve squad had shown such promise that Coach Kolodziej- ski promoted them to the varsity. They were Gerald Caiser, Virgil Ciofu, Paul Condon, and Lloyd White. Of the eight league games played by the Doughboys, three were victories and five de- feats. The team opened the season by losing to Northern 46-32. Cass and Pershing had an even exchange of games. The first game was taken by Cass, 23-l8. The next was taken by Pershing 35- 28. Highland Park took a beating in both encounters with the Doughboys. The scores were 24-22 and 31-27. 'sf af an A .N Al. Only two veterans returned to the tennis team this year. They were Adolph Swiecicki and Richard Patterson. Other members of the team were Bill MacDonald, Del Easton, Henry Kutka, George White, and Larry Combs. The spring golf team was captained this year by Tom Cosmos, veteran of last season. With him on the team were Harold Thomp- son, Roy Wagner, Louis Lepri, and AI Clift. The Spring C-olf Tournament was played on june 6 and the dual championship on june 7, but Coach Kolodziejski has not yet named the victors. The l.ettermen's Club continued as usual with john Kabisa, president, Art Dishluk, vice-president, Paul Taylor, secretary. The baseball team lost the first two of their initial games, but were still leading con- tenders for the East-Side championship. The first game, lost to Highland Park, was pitched by joe Gieraltowski, who kept the Parkers to only two hits. Time has aged our classmates, but it has also brought them all good fortune. Let's take a little hop in our helio- copter, designed by Jini Kamm, over the modern city of Detroit. We land on a roof-top parking lot run by Bob Lemerise, and a mechanic rushes out to check our plane. We recognize him as Walter Roo- duck. On our way down to the main floor, We encounter an old friend, Anthony Sosich, who proceeds to sell us ten tickets to Pershing's next prom. Coming to the main floor, we stop at a newsstand run by Jack Gulish, we notice a striking pic- ture ofa huge football player grinning at us. lt's Milan Berar and the caption un- derneath reads, All-American. i Passing down the street, we notice fa- miliar names in lights over the Elaine Hinman Theatre advertising the play, Every Family Used To Have One. The starring players are Elsie Evans, Delores Rabat, Andy Serocki, Eddie Purdo, Grace Coviak, and Laura Ann Hawes. Going further d own the super-highway, we pause at a record shop owned by Peggy Smee. After a few minutes' deliberation, we decide to take these records: This ls L .file M .. Next we come to Emil Onyshkevich's department store. T h e r e, modeling cloths fit for a iVictoryl queen, we find Lucille Pieti, Bernice Block, Nancy Goyer, and Pat Young. Passing on to the shoe department, we get a glimpse of a pair of familiar huge feet. Smiling above those size l4's is Fred Scott. Fred told us he was waiting for the company to find a cow large enough to make his shoes. Oh, well, said Fred, lf they do it, it'll be a great featl The talk of having a woman president has materialized and we see this sign, 'Vote for Leona Klemek-our first female president. Library Club The Library and Book Club, one of the newest in the school, is one of our largest clubs with a membership 'of 45. All members must have a good scholarship stand- ing. The officers are Kenneth Murish, presi- dentg Shirley Wachter, secretary, and Dorothy E v a n s, treasurer, with Miss Fair as sponsor. Their purpose is to en- able the library staff to get to know each other, and to enjoy the latest in literature. The club is composed of about 25 students who meet every Tuesday and Thursday. It is proving to be a stepping-stone to the students who wish to enter the field of radio a ft e r completing high school. The music department, under the direction ot Mr. Kenneth lewell and Miss Lyle Engstrom, with Mrs, Helen l-laglund accompanying, has taken great steps in presenting entertainment for most ofthe school activities. A witness to this was the audience that thronged from the Denby auditorium on May l9, well pleased with the May Festival. The music was rendered by the music department. The audience enjoyed immensely the singing of the combined groups as Mr. jewell directed them in singing the moving, Democracy Forever. fd luudic The boys' chorus did a fine job in rendering the inspiring On the Sea. Miss Engstrom's girls' chorus was well rehearsed and received much applause after each number. The girls' ensemble, under the direction ot Miss Engstrom, which is composed of girls who are especially talented in music, sang Irving Ber- lin's ever-popular Say lt With Music. The ensemble, earlier in the semester, sang at a W.W.j. Detroit News l-lomemaker's Club pro- gram. The program was commemorating Pan- American Day, so the girls sang songs with Span- ish and South American trends. -Q 5 I. . -ff' Q ,Xp 04,0 G '-Q1 ,- .1 ., 1 lx' , xx Y, X W il, Swell '7!ze Baeeye 1 1 Wilfa pen The Mustang With a horse shoe and a rabbit's foot in one hand and a four-leaf clover and a good luck coin in the other, the Mustang staff started work early this term in an attempt to bring out the book on Cap and Gown Day. Every day without fail, the scurrying feet of one of the staff members could be heard in or about the Chronicle Office, lf it wasn't Marge Ballor seeking high and low for the rubber cement that somebody hid from our official paster, it was Ted Cajewski running around for the scissors. All this was, of course, in addition to the moans and groans of Delores Rabat, Elvira Smo- linski, Rosemary Popp, Don Bondy, Herb Ponta, loan lVlcGillivray, and artist Kenneth Lutzai. Why the moans? Guess it was because it almost killed us not to tell the students who asked the winners of the Mock Election, the name and the color of the book, and why the heck can't we see the pic- tures? We'll see them pretty soon, anyway. They're deep inside us and even though we don't realize it, they're embedded in our hearts. ls this true of some of the things in high school? Will you ever forget the sounding and re-sound- ing of Taps , and the raising of the Minuteman Flag, with the heart of every student throbbing close to his throat as he watched Old Glory wav- ing? Do you remember how you felt on Cap and Gown Day each time an undergraduate asked, Will you sign my book? Didn't your chin lift just a little? Do you remember the IZA play?-the time you were caught skipping?-the cramming before mids and finals? Remember that special date at the l?rom?+hours spent on the Mourner's Bench? - the wild cheering at football games? - the basketball team that finally broke our jinx?-look- ing for months at clocks that said 3 minutes to 2? Remember all the times you said, Sure wish I was out of school, and how, when the time really came to leave, all you could think of were the happy times you had and the empty, desolate feel- ing you experienced everytime you realized that in a few short days, your happy-go-lucky days would be at an end? Sure, there were some off days -plenty of them, in fact, but Commencement Day is sure to bring tears to the eyes of every senior, because every speaker will recall to us again three of the most wonderful years in our life.
