The Pirates opened the 1954-55 season against Eredericktown. They played excellent ball, but were defeated 19-12. Oct. l. HORNETS STING PIRATES After being held scoreless for two quarters, Crystal City carne to life in the second half to defeat the Pirates 19-O. Oct. 8. P.H.S. TOPPED BY HERCULANEUM Yieldinq their third consecutive Mineral Area Conference loss in as many Weeks, the Pirates were outplayed by the host, I-Ierculaneum, 20-6, Bob Geile scored the only marker. Oct. I5. PIRATES GAIN PRESTIGE IN TYING EESTUS A 0-0 tie was the result of the contest between the Festus Tigers and the Perryville Pirates. Oct. 18. BUCS COLLECT SECOND TIE IN SIX SHORT DAYS The Pirates and the Farmington Knights played to a I2-I2 tie in a re- scheduled game. Oct. 29. PIRATES BREAK INTO WIN COLUMN The Pirates picked up their first victory October 29 from the Flat River squad, 46-6. The Bucs started their drive early in the first quarter when on a 3rd down play, Geile pranced 55 yards to start the rout. A 35 yard pass from Geile to Thilenius netted another touchdown. ln the second quarter, a 35 yard Geile dash and a Geile-to-Fassel pass gave the Pirates a 26-0 lead which stood at halftime. In the third quarter, Weinrich scored twice, from a I yard cut and a I0 yard run. The lone Flat River marker was scored late in the 3rd period. A Geile-to-Fassel pass racked up our final score of 46-6. Extra points were scored by Geile, Eassel, and Abernathy. Nov. 5. PIRATES TROUNCE TI-IE DRAGONS The Pirates pounced on the Ste. Genevieve Dragons and gained a 32-0 victory, for the second win of the season. Nov. 12. BUCS SCARE DE SOTO - PIRATES ON THE MARCH AS GAME ENDS. The Pirates gave the Mineral Area Champions one of the biggest battles of the season, but DeSoto slipped by on a slim margin of 27-24. The Pirates started their drive after a seven point marker by the Dragons. On a first down, Geile passed to Thilenius for 50 yards, and landed the ball safely on the I5 yard line. Two plays later, Geile scored from the 4 yard line, and the halt ended I4-6. Early in the 2nd half, the Pirates started a determined drive. A jump pass from Weinrich to Fassel netted I5 yards. A Geile-to- Thilenius pass netted 38 yards and a first down. A I4 yard run by Geile took us over to make the score I2-I4. DeSoto scored again and Weinrich, after a down, ran 10 yards to hit pay -51-- Candid camera reports for a DeSoto photographer. dirt again. In the fading minutes of the game a Geile to Tucker pass racked up 30 yards and Weinrich passed to Thilenius for our 4th touchdown. None of our extra points being good, the final score read 27-24. Nov. 18. PERRYVILLE UP-ENDS CHESTER Despite the fact that Chester had only 12 points scored against them, and were the Co-Champions of the Little Egypt Conference, the elements of nature and the Perryville Pirates defeated the Yellow-jackets 6-O before a raincoat, umbrellaclad crowd of staunch supporters. Starting the action for the touch- down, Bob Geile picked up a punt on his 45, a defensive man missed a high tackle and Bob sprinted to the winning touchdown. Nov. 25. PIRATES OUTPLAY IACKSON IN EVERY DEPARTMENT BUT SCORE The Iackson Indians defeated the Pirates 26-19 in a closely fought con- test. Although the Pirates were defeated, they were ahead of Iackson in the statistics column. The Pen'y County Republican had this to say of the season: The Thanksgiving Day defeat gave Coach Hartel a three won, five lost, two tied year. The record is not too impressive to see on paper, but to those fans who saw the games, the 1954 season was a good one. The Crystal City game played at Perryville was undoubtedly Perry- ville's worst performance of the year, but its stunning upset of Chester two weeks ago more than washed out the bad taste of the Crystal City defeat. A victory over Iackson would have put a nice topping on the 1954 campaign, but we're satisfied the way things stand. With one exception, The Bucs played hard, clean football - all that any fan can ask. After the Chester game - one that will live in the annals of P.I-I.S. football history -- clean up following games. -524 BASKETBALL Fredericktown Sikeston St. Vincent Valle Valle Iackson Steelville Lutesville Chester Festus Chester Gorham Iackson Steelville Valle Ste.
